“You may have a point Wilts but in 2 Years she,ll be going in front of the electorate …..she,ll lose”

As i’ve said in here a couple of times it will be the economy, nhs, public services, immigration, etc that will decide the next GE.
Sometimes leaders matter, but as both Starmer and Sunak/Truss are all pretty non-descript, i suspect the leader focus will lessen as the GE approaches.
By then voters will have more to think about than the leader.
The likes of Boris, Thatcher, Blair had something about them that attracted votes.
    Starmer, Sunak, Truss do not.

A weak leader will lose you an Election , Gordon Brown a prime example , what happens if inflation keeps spiraling out of control while her tax cuts increase the debt burden …many economists say the cuts won’t slow inflation …some of the party members have a real tough decision here , on tonights display no one could vote for her

    Disagree, HDLG.

There was a global financial crisis in 2008-09, which the Tories blamed on New Labour. With the backing of the rightwing media, the myth that it was all Brown’s fault stuck.

Compare and contrast with the Tories’ approach to Covid and the Russian war in Ukraine. Lo and behold: these are global problems.

Sky News analysis of tonight’s debate:

The logic of his arguments may have been sound but at times his tone and approach came across as aggressive and hectoring.

The former chancellor repeatedly talked over Ms Truss as well as the debate host Sophie Raworth.

That could prove risky given the toxic nature of the leadership contest and the calls for a more peaceful approach.

Already briefing has appeared online from the Truss camp accusing Mr Sunak of “mansplaining” and behaving in a “shouty private school” way.

Ms Truss landed fewer punches and didn’t have as many clear “wins” but there were no disasters on her part.

In fact, by adopting a more restrained tone, the foreign secretary arguably looked more prime ministerial.

She looked weak …would Thatcher have let someone talk over …would she **** , Sunak had to change tact tonight , he did and he looked the much stronger candidate , Glad the Tories can’t go to the electorate with her , your right we have been effected by global events but at the end of the day the buck stops with the PM , the voter can’t effect global events , they can decide who’s in no10

“Talk slow and look composed, is the best advice I can give Rishi for Monday.”

Oh dear a diazepam might have helped.

A snap Opinium poll afterwards found 39 per cent of viewers thought Mr Sunak came out on top, but 38 per cent plumped for Ms Truss.

However, critically among Tory voters Ms Truss was seen as having won by a margin of 47 per cent to 38 per cent.

One thing that made me laugh was Fishy Rishi’s repeated claim that it would be immoral to leave a huge bill now for our children to pay in the future.

Like his kids will pay their taxes.

And if he and his wife, and others like them, actually paid their fair share, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

My conclusion is that Sunak is starting to look beaten.

That might seem odd given he’s the more intelligent and wiped the floor with Truss regularly all night.

But it’s not as simple as that.

In a madhouse the one sane person who feels they know the way forward will become increasingly desperate as they run out of time and end up looking the madman himself.

Sunak left himself open to accusations of hectoring, ex-public school boy, arrogant, “mansplaining” and he ignored the modern social constraints under which he was meant to be operating to his detriment.

He ended up looking like he was verbally bullying not one, but two, women.

Gone is the alpha male era of “come with me if you want to live” – and The Mail, already on Truss’s side – will use it against him.

The brighter person doesn’t always win, a life lesson Sunak might be about to learn for the first time.

It’s probably the first time he’s been the cleverest person in the room.

If so, he didn’t display much social nous in how he went about trying to take advantage of that.

    I think it’s Truss’s to lose, now.

With Sunak now out to ~3/1 it would appear that all Truss has to do is continue uttering wooden vacuities in order to guarantee victory. A puppet PM, strings to be pulled by the right of the Right; I wouldn’t be in the least surprised to see Johnson back in her cabinet

Meanwhile, somewhat lost amidst this tawdry, ugly Punch and Judy Show, has been the news that David Trimble has died. Not without flaws of course but nevertheless a Statesman with a capital S. Look at him and weep you squalid fifth-raters

He won the battle she won the war. He looked a bit rattled at times. As a couch watcher who cannot even win an argument with my mirror, I am hardly one to weigh in on this. I don’t think he is a small picture thinker but bean counter hurt and then she threw the bulk of Gordon Brown at him and he barely got up on a count of seven. She also used the term digging with spades and she looked immaculate flashing her teeth whilst hiding her £4 pound earnings but showing off a beautifully indented blue dress and better hair than her first showing. He hit back with his immigrant parents and doing the books and waiting at tables. She wanted everyone to go to Winchester. He did well with his 7% and ten out of ten but where was the clever riposte at the end when he advised her to stop reading Grimm.

…riposte in my head is written repost but I was swayed by the baying herd so I corrected it

I write in your shadow Sir ( and you are not alone) – yours fits the bill for copy – mine is more waste paper bin.

It’s a shame about Sunak – don’t know if he can recover from this or if he has anything left in his locker ( dirt possibly ) This was high stakes and Truss it seems prepared better and wisely gave him the floor when he butted in and he foolishly re-entered the lioness’s den and stood on her tale.

I met a few like Sunak at uni and if I read him right he’s what used to be known as an “Indian Prince,” spoilt child of a wealthy Indian (whose class system can put even British elitism in the shade), family, had the best of everything, £46,000 a year Winchester College education, off to Oxbridge and then into the City.

It’s a sheltered path to independent prosperity.

For sure, he’s intelligent – even 46 large a year won’t turn a moron into Oxbridge material – but he won’t be used to dealing with people who challenge him whose logic in his view is fundamentally flawed and whose level of intelligence he has contempt for.

There’s ways of winning a debate without looking an arrogant, self-entitled, bully and when the referee and your opponent are both female you need to be aware how it looks.

As gamble says, he clearly won the battle, but at what cost to his overall War effort?

1.27 Truss, 4.8 Sunak tells its own story.
