DJ, EW,
Do you think RDLP is still improving?
Not sure a 5 times raced two year old like Rio has more improvement in him, but i was impressed by the way he won in France and a similar, more aggressive ride would imo probably see him getting closer to New Approach.
NA could still hold him off though.

Today’s times suggest the ground was slow, but not desperate. Fingers crossed they all run.
October 19, 2007 at 20:26 #120513Seems a decision on whether the Godolphin horse runs or not won’t be made until about 30 mins. before the race is run.
Isn’t this a touch of deja vu………….didn’t it happen with a Ballydoyle yoke a few years back?

Thanks Clint, my calcs suggest the ground is not as desperate as the official version and i’m interested in others opinions
I get Good to Soft for today

October 19, 2007 at 21:19 #120526Ground probably won’t be ideal for Rio De La Plata tommorrow, but the ground at Longchamp was genuinely good at best (just a touch on the slow side of good perhaps?) and he certainly wasn’t inconvenienced by the ground then..
I certainly reckon he’ll give New Approach more to think about tommorrow ridden closer to the pace..
October 19, 2007 at 21:39 #120531I’d be inclined to be more worried about Ravens Pass on this ground trackside
Rio’s price @ 5-1, 9-2 looks a tad generous
October 19, 2007 at 21:49 #120533Rio dela Plata is a cracking each-way bet to nothing IMO
Cannot see him out of the first three
October 19, 2007 at 23:04 #120541Something tells me that Jim Bolger rates New Approach higher than Teofilo. Something tells me that if New Approach was not in the Bolger yard then Teofilo would have been nursed back to fitness instead of being retired after an ‘unsatisfactory scan’.
Take the hint. New Approach wins his 2nd race on July 28th and delights connections. A few days later, after hours of deliberation, the Bolger yard decide not to take any risks with Teofilo as they already have the 2nd coming in New Approach. Let;s get Teofilo off to stud and make millions, while New Approach betters him on the track.
Yes, i’ve been drinking again.

October 19, 2007 at 23:04 #120542I’ve looked at the National Stakes video many times and from initially thinking Rio was significantly disadvantaged by the pace bias I came around to deciding that he was plenty close enough if good enough- I don’t think he’d have beaten the winner that day however the race panned out. Tomorrow is another day and this time New Approach has to travel for the first time but give in the ground is a major boost to him and a negative for Raven’s Pass. FWIW I think New Approach will win tomorrow but I won’t be taking 6/4. My only bet is a lay of Raven’s Pass, a good-actioned horse who I think will struggle on the prevailing ground.
October 20, 2007 at 17:01 #120665That’s that then.
Sorted !. Confirmed!

New Approach is now indisputably the daddy, as they say.

October 20, 2007 at 18:14 #120675Rio de la what??? ravens pass??? this guys is a machine, see and believe fellows, he ran crap today and still beat them, roll on the derby!!!
October 20, 2007 at 18:45 #120679Certainly the first four home today look like a very good bunch, hopefully they will all train on well for next season. I’d be willing to give Raven’s Pass another chance when the ground is quicker, same can be said of Rio De La Plata. Not to take anything away from New Approach who clearly will be the one to beat come the Guineas (if he gets there). Great run as well by Fast Company.
October 20, 2007 at 18:54 #120681Is it just me, or did Raven’s Pass appear to fall in a hole?
When he took it up 2f out I thought the race was over as New Approach looked to be in trouble and I hadn’t noticed Fast Company making headway on the outer.
New Approach was brilliant, the way he suddenly regained control and quickened was very impressive, but Ravens Pass just stopped as if shot and didn’t show that turn of foot that he did at Sandown.
Yet he still finished ahead of Rio De Le Plata, who finished ahead of some top colts, so it obviously wasn’t a bad effort. As for the winner, well I said just yesterday that all the indications were there that Bolger rates this horse at least as good as Teofilo – a frightening prospect.

Good job there is no meeting there tomorrow. I remember the Leger being moved a few years ago when something similar happened.

October 20, 2007 at 19:51 #120686I’m very impressed by Fast Company considering his slow start…
