Red Rum 1977, Mrs Pudding Senoir backed him too win, she has just had me, she backed the trainers next winner in the race Amberliegh House.

West Tip, my full brother back him too win at the tender age of eight.

Comply Or Die, my self and my now ex watched him win the Eider chase ( backed by a man first time racegoer who went crazy eying up all the rough trade) and duly backed him too win on national day.

Eshiness, the winner of the national that never was, what a mess.

Red Marauder, 2001, i witness this race in the flesh, it was a bloody wet joke of a race, the track was not raceable.

Party Politics, John Major attended daring the IRA too have a go after the mess of the previous saturday, I have a strong suspision that saturday ranks alongside Robert Macartneys murder as one of the events that forced north ireland politicans too put away the gun and take up the ballet box.

Yorkshire – I think you will find it was Lord Gylleen who won the "Monday" national in 1997.

Party Politics was1992 the year before the National that never was.

I haven’t got a list of all my National bets, but my first was 6d each-way on Moidore’s Token in 1968, presumably placed my dad since I was seven at the time.

    I had Red Rum each-way in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977 and added Rag Trade in 1976.

I had Aldaniti in 1981 having been at Ascot for his prep race, then West Tip in 1986.

A few placed after, but next winner was Earth Summit in 1998. Looked to have everything in it’s favour, so I tipped that up to everyone at work and our customers, which made me rather popular. I also had St Mellion Fairway each-way, backed ante-post at 40-1, having followed him as a potential National contestant since his bumper days.

I was doing speed figures the year Red Marauder won, and had it top rated, but common sense told me it had no real chance……..

Most recent winner I backed was Numbersixvalverde in 2006.

St Mellion Fairway one of the most imposing horses I have ever seen…saw him walk into the parade ring at Sandown one day and everyone around just seemed to gasp!

All the National bets I can remember (I was only 12 in 1999):

    1999- Fiddling The Facts
    2000- Dark Stranger
    2001- Earthmover
2002- Blowing Wind (15-y-o me couldn’t see him losing!), Ad Hoc
    2003- You’llneverwalkalone, Amberleigh House
    2004- Amberleigh House, Joss Naylor
    2005- Clan Royal
    2006- Numbersixvalverde, Inca Trail
    2007- Point Barrow (AP 10/1)
2008- Comply Or Die (AP 25/1 right before the Eider IIRC, my best National result), Bewley’s Berry (got paid out having backed him e/w with Paddy Power)

Trust you to turn up on an aftertiming thread!

    1977 Red Rum
    1980 Ben Nevis
    1990 Mr Frisk
    1994 Minnehoma
    1998 Earth Summit
    1999 Bobbyjo
    2006 Numbersixvalverde
    2008 Comply or Die

And my two that got away, Ad Hoc in Bindaree’s race, and Le Coudray (at 50’s) in Amberleigh House’s race.

I love watching the front runners over these fences, such a glorious sight when they jump in rhythm. Tremallt and the Last Fling were great to watch until fate took over.

I think YP is referring to the Warrington bombing 20 March 1993.

I remember my first National bet – it was in 1977, and as I was only 8 at the time, I mustered up some of my pocket money and asked my dad to stick some on Red Rum and some on Churchtown Boy. Just a pity I’d never heard of a forecast in those days!

I can’t remember all my National bets – usually pick at least 2 horses a year, and I remember backing the following winners:

1982 – Grittar (my dad worked with Frank Gilmans neighbour)
    1983 – Corbiere
    1986 – West Tip
    1990 – Mr. Frisk
    1997 – Lord Gyllene
    1998 – Earth Summit

I usually bet each way, and I’ve had quite a few placed finishers as well, although rather alarmingly, I’ve just checked the past results – although I backed the runner up in 2000 and 2002, I’ve not had a placed finisher since!!

The mention of Churchtown Boy has reminded me of Peter O’Sullevan’s commentary, which after saying being followed or chased by Churchtown Boy, completed the sentence by saying "preceded by loose horses" (referring to Red Rum). That phrase, preceded by loose horses, has always remained in my memory.

Sadly terminally so in The Last Fling’s case – he’d given a stupendous display over the fences before meeting his end at the second Canal Turn. A terrible shame, but as close to the definitive "died doing what he loved" as I think I’ve seen on the racetrack.

I agree, gc, I had a real soft spot for the horse as he always seemed to love his job. All course fatalies are bad, but his seemed so unjust.
