He lives in a large house in the village where I grew up. It has a paddock at the back with a few horses, which I assume are retired racehorses.

I wonder if he will get to keep it?

I’ve always believed in only spending money I actually have.

That possibly partly explains why I’ve never owned a racehorse.

    And never will.

    Or ever wanted to.

    Funny old game.

It’s always been my assumption (possibly wrongly, who knows?) that people like this chap enjoy “giving it large” in front of an audience.

In short, the opinion of other people matters – a LOT, maybe too much.

But the flip side to that whole, “look at me, loadsmoney, King Of Chester Racecourse” thing is that people are now looking at him and seeing a bankrupt who, as such, was arguably living a lie with his largesse for years.

    Was it worth it?

Wouldn’t it be better to simply live within your means – as opposed to running up debts – and be able to sleep easy at night?

    Takes all sorts, I suppose.

You’re quite right with your assessment, Ian.

Still, he had a pretty successful life imo as he taught at the University of Liverpool and was also appointed Director of International Business. You would expect more class and also more shrewdness involved in his investments.
You don’t need a degree to figure out that the average ROI in British Racing is at about 50%-60%. If you don’t go into breeding the losses are guaranteed. I went through his top ten “money-spinners” of 2018: they’re all geldings. The prospect of his horses going to stud is much lower than the one Luke Comer owns…..

I once heard it was only 10% on average for owners, though more recently I read the figure was 20%.

But even if your percentage is correct, racehorse ownership is literally no better an investment than a Lottery ticket.

He does seem an unlikely Flash Harry turned bankrupt, but we live in a world of dressing up, hence legitimising, spending money you don’t actually have in life, or in business, with terms like “funding” and “gearing,” so it’s hardly a surprise, I guess.

My Micawber-esque view of life went out of fashion ages ago.

Gabriel, Sizing, Bollin, etc – people who can’t follow the tradition of naming their horses – with a unique title, preferably – after both sire and dam shouldn’t be allowed to own horses.

“My Micawber-esque view of life went out of fashion ages ago.”

It may be unfashionable but it’s probably still true long term. I wonder how Derrylin’s favourite quarryman is getting on these days. It’s quite nice not to look at a big ignorant 1980s font “Q” plastered everywhere you look. That man wanted his name immortalised even more than Gabrial’s daddy wanted to shout about his kid.

I have not been to Chester races for a long time but I have seen Koukash at Haydock and I agree with ID’s assessment.

On his horses, I recall he had decided to stop buying so many geldings in training and switch his focus to buying fillies and breeding from them instead. Perhaps an early sign that his losses were mounting up?

‘He does seem an unlikely Flash Harry turned bankrupt, but we live in a world of dressing up, hence legitimising, spending money you don’t actually have’

Ten minutes on the road will show you that. Look at the amount of £50k plus motors driving around, almost all purchased on ‘finance’.

The sad thing is that Koukash could I am sure have lived a life most only dream of with the money he did actually have, maybe even including owning a few horses. Greed is prevalent at all levels of society and it appears that whatever he did have just wasn’t enough. It’s all a massive shame really but such is life.
