Top northern-based jockey of yesteryear, Mark Birch, has passed away at the age of 67. I can remember him riding many a good horse and he will forever be associated with the wonderful Sea Pigeon and the Chester Cup, a race they twice won together.

    May he rest in peace.

    Very sad news indeed.
I met him on my 18th birthday when I visited the mighty Night Nurse at the Easterby yard. Had a craic with him about racing in general and Sea Pigeon in particular.
    Seemed a thoroughly nice chap.
My best wishes are extended to his family and friends.
    RIP.
