July 2, 2008 at 17:56 #171378Clivex, if the Flatties can start a thread entitled "The Eclipse….How Bad?", then I’m sure you can allow me this mildest of pops of the games poorer cousin.
You know it makes sense.
July 2, 2008 at 18:10 #171382Perhaps, Lydia, as one of our other ‘celebrities’ who no longer posts on here, finds that this forum has become decidedly childish in character.

His horse Salute is well, thats for sure. Well done AP.
July 2, 2008 at 21:09 #171407Alan is fine, he had a rare day’s racing at Salisbury last Wednesday.
The builders were in and he needed to get out.

July 2, 2008 at 21:15 #171409Well done Salute (and Alan of course)
July 2, 2008 at 22:23 #171414Seconded – if you’re still reading these, Alan, very well played (and placed) once again. Good work by Rab Havlin there as well, stealing a march on his rivals 3f out and putting their (mostly) suspect stamina to the test. A fine outcome all round!

July 3, 2008 at 09:40 #171460Thank you gentlemen – I was alerted to your comments by an email.
The race went exactly to the script we’d written with the jockey and was most enjoyable to watch as a result. Since Polytrack arrived at Kempton, Salute has run 18 races on the surface (most at Kempton or Wolverhampton) and he’s picked up prize money in 17 of those races, winning five. I doubt I’ll ever find another one like him.

July 3, 2008 at 09:47 #171462Welcome back, Alan.
I hope this just isn’t a fleeting visit.

July 3, 2008 at 09:47 #171463Absolutely,the ideal horse to own.
Consistent, game and almost certain to win a couple of races each year.July 18, 2008 at 20:58 #173706Looking at the Times website last night, I saw that Lydia Hislop’s last article was back in May, so I assume she’s been given the boot, which is a great pity, but the Times has a tradition of preferring their racing writers to come from the ranks of old Etonians, an old school tie that she clearly doesn’t wear.
Looking at the newspaper today, I see that the racing results are now winning jockey-free, a great leap forward I’m sure we’d all agree, but they managed to make room for 6 (!) fairly uninspiring racecards, at least 4 of which (Nottingham, Hamilton, Southwell and Pontefract), to a Surrey-based person like me, were completely surplus to requirements.
They could have used some of the space saved to include an interesting racing article, perhaps written by someone like Miss H.

Don’t get me wrong, not judging her – just pointing out that in any walk of life “loose cannons” seem to get sidelined fairly swiftly. If you don’t play by the unwritten rules then you are likely to suffer in the long run.
I hope it’s not the case that Ms Hislop may have been sidelined because she has the courage to speak as she sees. I fear that Firefox’s sage comment about “loose cannons” only seems to apply to women journalists. It’s hard to imagine the career of …. [i:1cmu3091][insert name of selected male rabble-rouser here][/i:1cmu3091] … suffering because they speak out of turn. Quite the reverse.
True, there are double standards in racing as in every other walk of life. It even applies to the horses – mildly humorous epithets such as “a character” or “a thinker” are applied to a colt, whilst an errant filly gets castigated as “a bit of a madam”, as if it femininity ought to be all sweetness and light, and individuality not encouraged!
I hope Ms Hislop has the courage to remain outspoken, opinionated and independent, despite any knock-backs from the (mainly male) establishment. There’s no doubting that when it comes to intelligence, articulacy and journalistic savvy, this filly needs no 3lb allowance to beat the colts (not to mention the geldings) at their own game!

Wouldnt be difficult for her to beat mainly 2yo geldings in fairness. If it is true (?) then that’s The Times loss. I’m sure its only a matter of time before her output will be available elsewhere.
July 19, 2008 at 09:51 #173752lydia does a very good job and prefer her to other presenters on ruk her post race assessments are very good and the same applies to steve mellish if they feel something needs saying they say it
July 19, 2008 at 09:51 #173753How anyone can knock Lydia is beyond me.
