With the small field, heavy ground, and probable lack of pace, surely this is just another stroll in the park for Beef or Salmon?
The strange campaign of War of Attrition seems to suggest his trainer only has eyes for Cheltenham once again, and he looks certain to perform at least a stone below his best on ground that denies his him greatest asset, his jumping.
The Listener has too much to find on all known form, and looks to be taking advantage of favourable conditions to pick up some useful place money, at best.
L’Ami ran a creditable race in the Betfair Chase to finish a length behind BoS, but surely today’s heavy going swings the pendulum further in BoS’s favour, leaving little chance of a reversal today.
Southern Vic’s programme looks geared more towards gaining a good mark for one of the Nationals rather than seriously competing for anything along the way, so it is difficult to see where any opposition is coming from.
The downside, I suppose, is having to read for the next few months, how good Beef or Salmon is for winning 10 of these non-events.
December 28, 2006 at 09:47 #34601He looks the bet of the day at 7/4. I’ve got him about evens. The Shoes is ready to unload some of the Christmas money…..

LOL…cue indignant posts…
Got to agree that WOA’s campaign on continually unsuitable ground is pretty odd. Not sure how much the heavy going takes out of him, but he might as well be defeated on good going at Kempton :)

December 28, 2006 at 10:22 #34604Looks like an excellent race to trade on. The Listener is likely to be up with the pace jumping really well so should shorten up from 7/1 whilst Beef or Salmon is likely to be cumbersome and slow on a couple of occasions so should trade higher than 7/4.

Cue The Listener to make a mistake at the first and drop back into 2nd and Beef or Salmon travelling like a dream all the way around.

Total b*****ks
of courseThe "acid test" of a fine staying chaser will be in a decent field running at a reasonable clip over tricky fences on ground that is acceptable to most runners, in a race that all the runners have been aimed at
December 28, 2006 at 10:57 #34607DJ,
I think the Listener is a very tasty price, was quite impressed with his jumping at Sandown.

He’ll need to find a about stone improvement to get close to Beefy or The flying Salmon to seriously under perform (highly unlikely).
December 28, 2006 at 11:17 #34609I’ll be backing The Listener under ideal conditions today. I think there is every reason to expect plenty of improvement to be forthcoming today. Any horse that jumps like he does for The Strangler must be seriously talented.
December 28, 2006 at 11:18 #34610With the idea of laying off in running DJ?
You can’t seriously think he can beat BOS under his ideal conditions?
December 28, 2006 at 11:32 #34611SS
Yes I’ll lay off to cover my stake but I honesty think The Listener in heavy going in a small field is capable of running to 160+.
December 28, 2006 at 12:57 #34612An added plus is that Thornton is replaced by a conditional
Agree with that JJ,
improvement needed, but this horse still has potential and if jumping the same as Sandown, i can see him going close in this

December 28, 2006 at 14:43 #34615Well done to all who picked that, winner jumped great. Second and third looked very one paced.
December 28, 2006 at 14:47 #34616Good pick for those on The Listener.
Hard to pick any holes – maybe a softish lead… Thats all.
