Did you walk the track?
"ANY clown" will tell you that today’s ground was not soft to heavy.
December 30, 2009 at 01:48 #266377Have u forgotten?? Last March, Denman came an amazing 2nd to Kauto after having had open-heart surgery. Strange as this sounds, that takes some getting over!?!
PMSL
That actually made me laugh

Thought you’d quit? Jeez.
December 30, 2009 at 01:54 #266379By the way, Aido, Sublimity won’t stay if it’s a strongly run race. I was a big fan of the horse, but you have to know when to let go and he plain and simply doesn’t get up the hill in a truely run Champion Hurdle.
You make referene to Denman being below par last year. I’m the first to say that was a marvellous run from him, but you seem to neglect the fact that Kauto Star was well below par in 2007.
You are picking things out to suit yourself, not looking at the bigger picture.
December 30, 2009 at 02:31 #266381Ok, i see ur point, but what about this… Denman was below-par because of open-heart surgery (perfectly understandable i would say?!!),Kauto was below par because he wasnt fresh going into the race. Was there any other reason or excuse for Kauto when Denman destroyed him? I think Denmans excuse is pretty solid and valid….Is Kautos??? Was there an ailment that NOBODY else knew of, but which u will enlighten us to???
Regarding walking the track, strange that the stewards dont let us ordinary race-goers walk the track beforehand…Which other course does???? It was AT LEAST SOFT today, believe me, which Sublimity does not like.
December 30, 2009 at 02:34 #266382Big Bucks, i was the 1st to admit I got the Lexus all wrong, but thats life!!! But it was a poor renewal….Not as poor as the King George though. Every horse has their favourite track, and Kempton just brings the best out in Kauto. Doesnt make him better than Arkle or Denman though.
December 30, 2009 at 02:42 #266384Aido, you have to just slip out onto the track for an aul inspection, very important thing to do

I think the ground was probably on the good side of soft, because Nicky Richards and Jim Dreaper both said they would have liked more cut in the ground. It was yielding this morning, but it was raining, so no worse than soft anyway.
It doesn’t take a genius to see Kauto wasn’t at his best that day. Who knows why not, maybe he had a headache, hows he supposed to tell anyone?
December 30, 2009 at 03:18 #266386Maybe so, but were his excuses as solid as Denmans???
Ground was soft, Notre Pere just isnt good enough. If u ask Dreaper in private, he’ll tell u that too!!!!
December 30, 2009 at 03:20 #266388By the way, u ever been to Leopardstown?? How u supposed to slip onto that track without being apprehended after about 10 seconds??????????????
December 30, 2009 at 03:26 #266389Been there many times, though little track walking success I must admit! Managed it once @ last year’s festival

At Punchestown it’s as easy as pie!
December 30, 2009 at 03:51 #266392Punchestown, its easier, but Leopardstown is harder than Fort Knox!!!
December 30, 2009 at 08:29 #266398Big Bucks, i was the 1st to admit I got the Lexus all wrong, but thats life!!!
It is not getting it wrong that Big Buck’s is mocking or whatever, it is making a statement such as "If such-and-such . . . then I’ll give up the game/gambling/horseracing".
December 30, 2009 at 11:32 #266419All this talk of Kauto Star being the best ever, just because he wins an egg and spoon race at Kempton is laughable.
So if the clear number two staying chasers race of the season with the strongest field yet seen this year is an "egg and spoon" race, what isnt?
Just the Gold cup? Everything else rubbish?
Kempton brings best out of Kauto yes. The race has always brought "the best" out of the best horses. For many years the KGV was a more reliable provider of the top class chaser than the GC
December 30, 2009 at 12:56 #266438I thought I read somewhere that Cooldine coughed afterwards. I’d also read a week or so ago that there were a few coughing in the Mullins yard but, again, not sure where I read it.

December 30, 2009 at 13:36 #266443Thought Sam Thomas’s post race interview was a bit strange where he stated that his only worry was the 3 week gap from the Hennessy, it was 4 weeks and 3 days.

Aido I’ll tell you something about me. I always give people the benefit of the doubt and make allowances for people I am not used to conversing with………I think it’s because I am such a nice guy
.So taking all these wonderful things about my nature into consideration can I ask you something in the nicest possible way?
WTF did you get that ridiculous idea from that Demnam had open heart surgery?
He was popped a few pills and allowed to time for the problem to go away. Young dogs have the same problem in their thousands and Vet’s don’t even treat them.
It is not a serious ailment and horses don’t drop dead from it, what it does is knocks them back physically but most animals in time like Denman has recover fully.Who knows what was wrong with Kauto after Ascot. He certainly wasn’t as he had been at Kempton a few weeks before. He did finish lame and if he was hurting during the race that could have been the reason he wasn’t 100% at Cheltenham.
It’s only a theory but if you’ve ever had a sprained ankle it takes you along time to get over it and although it’s healed 90% you don’t have the confidence to go running round a football pitch. A small thing like that lameness if it did cause him pain would affect his daily work and how much effort he put into it and come March that could easily affect his performance.
Purely guess work but as it wasn’t anything Denman did that had Kauto initially in trouble it’s blatantly clear something was amiss.
That is unless I was dreaming and I didn’t see the same horse follow Neptune and co round the following year and doing so in 2nd gear.
If they both go there fit and well of course it’s going to be tougher for Kauto this time. When such and such come to the end of their tether and Denman takes over it will be like the start of a new race. However if Kauto can travel like he did last year and in the King George last week Denman will be very hard pushed to get him off the bridle. Even if he does it’s not going to be at the first fence on the second circuit like it was in 2008.
At the end of the day Kauto still has an ace up his sleeve and that is even under severe pressure he finds extra whereas unfortunately Denman finds little the minute he hits the Cheltenham Hill.
Admittedly he came up the hill better last year than he did the year before but he was ridden to get home and was beaten a very long way.
Ridden aggressively with Kauto on his tail by the time they jump the last Denman will have given his all and a bit more but I can’t see him coping when Ruby says go.
December 30, 2009 at 16:03 #266470Fist is quite right; Denman did not have a heart operation as the vet deemed it unnecessary. The big horse responded to drug treatment instead.
As for the prospective Gold Cup clash – Kauto v Denman part 3 – I suspect that Ruby Walsh will once again ride KS close to the pace ( I hope he does ) and endeavours to test Sam Thomas’s and (a much fitter) Denman’s mettle and resilience.
I cannot wait.
