Lexus Steeplechase (Grade 1) of €150,000.00 5-y-o plus 3m. 2nd – €30,000.00, 3rd – €15,000.00, 4th – €6,000.00, 5th – €3,000.00, 6th – €1,500.00 13 Declared
A steeplechase for five yrs old and upwards
Weights – 5-y-o 11st 9lb; 6-y-o and up 11st 10lb; Mares allowed 5lb1 5-1-1F Aran Concerto
2 3-635 Cane Brake
3 1FU3 Cloudy Lane
4 3-114 Cooldine
5 6-1P2 Imperial Commander
6 34/12 In Compliance
7 1321 Joncol
8 2111 Money Trix
9 21F5 Notre Pere
10 2224 Schindlers Hunt
11 1213 Voy Por Ustedes
12 1-612 What A Friend
13 4103 J’y VoleLooks an average enough renewal on paper. I can’t for the life of me understand why Imperial Commander is going to Kempton to chase Kauto Star’s tail when there’s a very winnable Grade 1 waiting over here for him.
Aran Concerto – Had a heavy fall when well held last ime out in the John Durkan. More than likely he’ll swerve this and have a confidence booster over hurdles at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve instead. (Best Price 16/1)
Cane Brake – Has been campaigned over hurdles since his third in this last year. Taaffe is probably looking to protect his handicap mark for Liverpool in April. He likes Leopardstown but he is well outclassed here. (Best Price 50/1)
Cloudy Lane – Ran well for a long way at Kelso under a big weight when he probably needed the run. Has been backed in recent days but its hard to see him running into a place unless there are a few fallers. (Best Price 25/1)
Cooldine – Probably Ireland’s only realistic Gold Cup hopeful given that Paul has already come out and said that Joncol is unlikely to travel. Beat the likes of Forpadydeplasterer, Trafford Lad, Tranquil Sea and Rare Bob in the Moriarty before galloping his way to an impressive win at Cheltenham. Willie’s are very in and out at the moment though and he is likely to come on for the run. (Best Price 6/1)
Imperial Commander – Likely NR.
In Compliance – Held by Joncol on Punchestown form and he is unlikely to appreciate the step up in trip like the Nolan horse. Place possibilities at a biggish looking odds. (Best Price 16/1)
Joncol – Improving sort who should relish the step up in trip here. The Naas form looks very strong after the way Tranquil Sea ran at Cheltenham and you would have to be impressed with the way he won the Durkan. Yard is in cracking form and it is hard to believe that some books still have Notre Pere shorter than him. (Best Price 3/1)
Money Trix – Workmanlike at Kelso but he stayed on and battled very well at the back of the last. Hard to see him winning this but he’ll be at home around a galloping track like Leopardstown and I could see him plodding on into the money. (Best Price 16/1)
Notre Pere – Out and out mudlark who will need it hock deep which it is unlikely to be (Yielding to Soft currently). He has the ability to prove me wrong but I can’t understand how anyone could back him at the current odds after his last two runs – faller up the North and out with the washing at Haydock. (Best Price 3/1)
Schindlers Hunt – Chased home Notre Pere at Punchestown last year but its doubtful whether this trip does suit. Ran disappointingly enough at Ascot given that he was well fancied. Doesn’t strike me as great value at 14-16/1. (Best Price 16/1)
Voy Por Ustedes – Closely matched on form with Schindlers Hunt but like the Hughes horse he doesn’t scream value given that he’s never won over three miles. If he didn’t quite get it on a decent surface around Kempton, I can’t see him getting three miles around a galloping track like Leopardstown on yielding/soft ground. (Best Price 8/1)
What A Friend – Ran well to chase Denman home in the Hennessy but he’s well held by Cooldine on Cheltenham form. He looks a quirky, soft kind of a horse and I doubt he’ll win if he is asked to battle. I have a feeling Ruby might ride him though because Willie is likely to want Paul Townend to get as much experience as possible on Cooldine before the Gold Cup. (Best Price 11/2)
J’y Vole – Tearaway mare in her younger days but they tried to get a bit of cover at Punchestown and she was well beat after 3 out. Hard to see her turning that form around with Joncol and In Compliance especially considering the indifferent form of the yard. (Best Price 33/1)
Verdict – 1. Joncol 2. Cooldine 3. In Compliance
December 23, 2009 at 23:51 #265237I actually think 25/1 Cloudy Lane is a bit of value. This isn’t unlike 3 miles around his beloved Haydock and he’ll be spot on after his first run. a lot of doubts about those at the head of the market for me.

Cooldine 6/1 ew looks a decent price to me.
December 24, 2009 at 11:06 #265283On Soft ground i am confident Joncol will show he is a serious horse,on Good ground Cooldine has to run a big race to justify his position in the Gold cup market!Notre Pere,No chance!
December 24, 2009 at 12:14 #265293Paul Nolan speaking about Joncol.
December 24, 2009 at 12:26 #265296Joncol is my tip the form of his 1st race of the season is strong. And Joncol will be better at 3m
December 25, 2009 at 00:13 #265418I’ve heard Aran Concerto is unlikely to run.
December 25, 2009 at 01:48 #265424Walsh on Cooldine.
December 25, 2009 at 11:50 #265440Noel Meade talking about his big guns over Christmas!
December 25, 2009 at 17:27 #265471am i the only one who has doubts about joncols stamina, only once he tried the trip and for me he got outstayed by an average 140 horse!!!
i will be taking him with notre petre with me doing some jazzy rain dancing lol!! belive me notre is a very reliable stayer who gets into a good rhythm at leopardstown!!! i see him outstaying everything
cooldine needs the run and joncol dont stay also VPU wont stay unless they go slow which wont happen
denman should of ran pity tbh
December 25, 2009 at 17:56 #265474Joncol oughtn’t to have too much trouble staying 3m on a flatish track.

You’ve obiously never been to Leopardstown, it’s a big galloping track with a very stiff uphill finish.December 25, 2009 at 19:12 #265483It looks flat on the telly!
December 25, 2009 at 19:34 #265488Joncol was very impressive at Punchestown and this step back up in trip won’t be a problem.
He’s built like a stayer and it’s quite possible that he was slightly on the weak side when beaten over three miles-one in April.
Still only six, he looks most progressive and his best years are certainly ahead of him. With his good looks, solid attitude and obvious ability, I can him becoming the new darling of the Irish NH scene.

The standard time for 3 miles is 5 seconds more than Kempton, for instance.

Looks can be deceiving
December 25, 2009 at 21:42 #265501In terms of price, i think In Compliance at 20/1 is more than fair. He travelled very well in the John Durken, but maybe just didn’t appreciate the ground. I’d expect the ground to be better, so he could run a good ‘un and take a few by suprise.
