Kauto Star has been put down after sustaining a complex fracture to the left side of his pelvis as the result of a fall
June 30, 2015 at 08:42 #1118493Sad, sad news. What a horse he was. R.I.P old boy.
June 30, 2015 at 08:54 #1118498Sad news indeed, just 15 and had plenty of years ahead of him. I will have many fond memories.

June 30, 2015 at 09:23 #1118505RIP King Kauto. Made me fall in love with the NH Game. Gone but never forgotten
June 30, 2015 at 09:31 #1118506Terribly sad.
I got into racing around the time of the Kauto Star and Denman rivalry and Kauto Star very much ignited my interest in horse racing, have a picture of him on my desk the day he won the fifth King George. What a race horse, a true great. I thought he was finished in 2011, I don’t mind admitting I had a few tears in my eye when he won the 2011 Betfair Chase, no other race horse has captured my heart like he did.
RIP Kauto Star, thanks for the memories.
June 30, 2015 at 09:42 #1118510I can hardly beleieve what I’m hearing. And they’d given him what should have been the safest of safe retirements as well. RIP
June 30, 2015 at 10:00 #1118512I read the veterinary report in RP which says he had a broken neck, pelvis and femur, from stumbling in his paddock? That he was pts due to complications of pneumonia and lamintis due to being cross tied, but he couldn’t stand due to a broken neck?
It doesn’t seem to make sense.
What a very sad end for a great horse.June 30, 2015 at 10:18 #1118543No, I’m confused by it. I’d assumed that it was a sudden, freak accident.
June 30, 2015 at 10:45 #1118547Check the Racing Post, seems the accident was a while ago. Paul Nichols has said he was informed just before the press release but the accident was a week ago.
There’s something not right about this.
June 30, 2015 at 10:49 #1118548Oh what awful news my favourite horse ever together with Best Mate. Its a pity relations broke down between the trainer and owner but we have so many great memories of the horse. I was at Haydock in 1999 when Kauto just beat Imperial Commander in the Betfair (Lancashire) Chase and the post-race atmosphere was truly amazing with the whole crowd applauding the horse after a wonderful performance. Rarely have I been to a race meeting where there was such feeling for one horse, you never get that with the flat. Add to that five King Georges at Kempton and the only horse to win retain his crown as winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. RIP to a great horse.
June 30, 2015 at 10:54 #1118549This is horrible news and it has blighted my day.
Doesn’t seem quite right. They’re saying that he died following a fall and yet, simultaneously, they’re not sure what happened. Maybe it’s just me but does anyone else get the impression as though the owners are trying to sweep something under the carpet?
God bless Kauto’s soul…
June 30, 2015 at 10:59 #1118550Absolutely gutted to hear this
A brilliant versatile horse who also had me in tears not only on the 2011 Betfair Chase day but also his fifth KG win. His 2009 KG win was jaw dropping. Although he made a few howlers in his time, his jumping was also amazing not least in those last two victories. All this plus the fact he was at the top of his game for such a long time that he competed in an incredible six Gold Cups. RIP Kauto, you were unique.

No. It just seems they tried to do all they could to save him but in the end couldn’t.
June 30, 2015 at 11:07 #1118552Sad news. And to think he retired from racing unscathed.
June 30, 2015 at 11:10 #1118553Yes, that’s the most likely explanation Ken. Maybe the memory of the messy retirement row is causing oversensitvity, looking for things that aren’t there.
Sad news indeed.
June 30, 2015 at 11:13 #1118554He had had some crashing falls though, including that schooling fall he had before his last Gold Cup run, which is why I assume Clive Smith wanted to give him an easy retirement. Maybe those falls just caught up with him.
