hopefully its an over reaction
i would imagine that the fetlock is now swollen and needs to be treated/iced over night and p nicholls is hoping that the swelling will go down and that the horse puts it under his weight..fingers crossed but it could be a few days before we know our faith..fingers crossed as this would rob cheltenham/nh histroy of somethign spectacular…typical of our sport though
February 16, 2008 at 19:19 #143929I just heard it over the tannoy in william hills, these things are seldom an over reaction, if he makes it to the race he probably wont be in the shape to win. Sadly it looks like an anteclimax is on the cards, time to get on exotic dancer e/w I think.
February 16, 2008 at 19:22 #143930Wonder if the ryanair candidates will find their way back into the plans for the gold cup now?

Doesn’t this game build up and knock down our hopes in the unfairest ways conceivable sometimes. I’ve been working on a Festival preview for one of my paid gigs this afternoon, and it’s literally only an hour ago, with all the dust evidently settled on today’s action, that I chanced to write;
Please God let the major protagonists in the Gold Cup betting get to Prestbury Park in one piece, for whilst this year’s renewal cannot offer the same strength in depth of some, the clash between KAUTO STAR and DENMAN would stand as one of the most hotly-anticipated in a Gold Cup for many years.
Naturally I await confirmation on the severity of the problem the same as everyone else, but my goodness I’m deflated at the moment. As a paid-up member of the Cheltenham-isn’t-everything brigade, though, I’d simply hope people do not judge the quality, or otherwise, of the jumps season as a whole on the basis of what may now be a very thinly-contested Gold Cup.

February 16, 2008 at 19:27 #143932Tragic news …..hope it is an overreaction but it doesn’t sound good.
February 16, 2008 at 19:28 #143933Any setback at this stage is probably enough to rule him out- he won’t be risked if he misses any work, which he’s almost bound to do. Someone take Fist’s tie and belt off fairly quickly!
Terrible shame, but you always had the feeling the dream match would get buggered up somehow…February 16, 2008 at 19:28 #143934Such a pity. I will be very surprised if Kauto Star lines up at Cheltenham now.
A stroll in the park for Denman, I would suggest. I cannot see anything touching him now.

February 16, 2008 at 19:28 #143935The Racing Post story has been updated, apparently Ascot’s senior vet thought it could of been an infection developing in one of his feet and not a sprain as previously thought. It’s difficult to know what to believe now !!!
February 16, 2008 at 19:32 #143937Don’t see how an infection could cause heat or pain so quickly post-race- would be inclined to dismiss that theory.
February 16, 2008 at 19:35 #143940I just got off the phone and was told that very few people in the press are willing to say anything as they can’t get confimation that it is a fetlock injury……I’m keeping an open mind
February 16, 2008 at 19:36 #143941Market has settled, now around 3.3 Kauto with Denman 2.3. This may be to do with the conflicting reports from Ascot, but I’m pinning my hopes on a general public over-reaction. I can’t help but think that if the worst were true that he would have touched bigger than 11/2 by now.
February 16, 2008 at 19:37 #143942Geezuz now it’s the Ascot vet who’s giving an opinion……they said earlier it came from PN?
February 16, 2008 at 19:37 #143943Don’t spend the evening alone mate, we’re thinking of you
February 16, 2008 at 19:47 #143947Now 9/4 Kauto Star on Betfair. Hope springs eternal I suppose.
The big firms have suspended betting.

February 16, 2008 at 19:48 #143948i do remember a certain king george winner being all but ruled out of the 2005 Gold Cup before reentering the picture only weeks before hand – he went on to run quite well if i remember correctly

….here’s hoping Kauto makes it

I’ll back that up – a BR colleague who was at Ascot today has just phoned me, asking whether I’d heard anything more than the not too informative "might be a fetlock, might equally not be" line that is all that the press office on course had been given.

February 16, 2008 at 19:49 #143950I would be very very suprised if he runs now-I know from experience when it a fetlock injury its a very grey area when in comes down to recovery time.
Hope he comfortable he was impressive today.
