That’s another decent winner for you Jonibake, continually impressive and very well done.

Thanks Buckers – very kind of you to say. He won easily enough and will probably step back up to Group company. The worry for me is his head carriage which looks very awkward.

July 25, 2016 at 21:12 #1257499A great 5 days of racing ahead. Isn’t the flat season amazing – one festival after another.
I have already posted my big bet of the week and, inevitably, it is my good old friend, The Gurkha. I say my good old friend but he has cost me a lot of money this year. But I maintain the faith and think we will see the real deal on Wednesday. By far his best performance and perhaps one of the 3 year old performances of the season was that race at Deauville when he blew away a good field on good ground. The two times he has run since it has absolutely bucketed it down just before the race and I can’t help thinking this affected his turn of foot. I have said many times that good horses go on any ground but I can’t help thinking he will be much more effective on the faster surface he will get on Wednesday. He is drawn well so there should be no excuses.
Tomorrow looks typically competitive so I am starting the week slowly. In the Vintage Stakes I can’t really choose between the front two in the market but I think one who can go well at a good price is Isomer. He has done nothing wrong in 3 starts and was a narrow runner-up in the Chesham. A line through Cunco gives him something to find with the front two but I have a feeling Cunco didn’t run his race that day so I am prepared to give Isomer an ew chance.
The Lennox looks a match to me and I like both horses. Obviously HP is one of my fav trainers and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see HOTB repel all from the front. But Dutch Connection has a very good record over 7f on ground faster than good (3 wins and a 3rd behind Gleneagles) – he doesn’t quite get home over a mile but this trip will bring the best out of him and I think the race might be run to suit. I take him to win narrowly.
I see the money has come for Notarised. I had a good look at him this morning as Mark Johnston always targets this meeting and this horse has been sliding down the handicap and now runs off a 5lb lower mark than when he ran well in it last year. I’ve missed the bigger prices but I think he will go close.
Finally I have heard very good things about HP’s 2 year old Mazyoun and am sure he will run well.
£25ew Isomer – 12-1 – Vintage Stakes lost
£80 win Dutch Connection – 5-2 – Lennox winner
£25ew Notarised – 8-1 – 3.45 Goodwood placed
£50ew Mazyoun – 7-2 – 4.55 Goodwood lost

A small profit on day one and a really good win for DC. He is definitely bordering on a Group 1 horse if only there were G1’s over 7f!
Another bet for tomorrow, may be more to come. Ulysses has apparently been working very well and Sir Michael has been patient since Epsom. The trainer is in good form now and I think this one will go close.
£75ew Ulysses – 7-2 – 2.35 Goodwood winner 9-2

July 27, 2016 at 13:23 #1257784Significant money for Sportsmanship in the 3.45 today. Looks like he will benefit from the drop back in trip.
Looking at a couple of doubles and trebles also.
£50ew Sportsmanship – 5-1 – 3.45 Goodwood lost
£30 win doubles Sportsmanship, Ulysses and The Gurkha winner
£30 win treble the three"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
July 27, 2016 at 13:42 #1257787I originally made The Gurkha and Ulysses just saving bets today Joni, couldn’t resist converting them both to main bets when Bet365 went 5/2 and 5/1 respectively.
Lightning Spear, Richard Pankhurst, The Major General or Qatari Hunter would be better results for me though.
I’ll settle for the two (probable) favs with you.

July 27, 2016 at 15:20 #1257806Great work Joni now just Sportsmanship to worry about but even if that flops I’m sure you’re up a nice amount
July 27, 2016 at 15:36 #1257815Thanks guys – yes Ginge we need all the help we can get! What a marvellous race that was. With the best part of £500 going on Sportsmanship I’ll have a little on his main danger Global Applause.

A fabulous day. So pleased that two of my original eye-catchers from April were my winners today. It just shows that you really have to stick to your guns and what your instinct tells you. The exciting thing is that I think they will both make even better 4 year olds. I said a few weeks ago that this year has been exceptionally difficult with all the bad ground and it is certainly making a difference now that proper flat horses are running on proper flat ground. I have had some low points this summer but things are picking up now – may it continue for a while!!
One last little bet for today. I can’t let a well-fancied son of Frankel go unbacked!
£50 win Senator – 5-2 – 7.50 Leicester winner

Days don’t come much better than today. Topped off with another Frankel 2 year old. He was big and raw but he got the job done!
Will probably have a midweek break tomorrow as nothing leaps out and I am in London all day.
