Announcement today that Joe Tizzard has decided to hang up his boots. Surprised to read he is 34 which seems a bit young to retire and he doesn’t appear to have been around that long, and certainly since the days he was stable jockey (?) to Paul Nicholls
March 21, 2014 at 17:53 #472785he was stable jockey (?) to Paul Nicholls
For two seasons. Rode the likes of Straight Talk, Flagship Uberalles, Double Thriller, Irbee etc
Met him briefly at Haydock shortly after his return from a broken back and he was a thoroughly pleasant chap. He’ll be missed but if he’s decided he’s not a jockey any more then he isn’t a jockey any more. He’s already his dad’s assistant so I imagine that’s his future.
Best of luck to him.
March 21, 2014 at 19:31 #472795Also surprised at the decision, although I thought he was a little older. With a couple more years in Cue Card, health permitting, I thought he would have gone on a little longer, but I don’t know the ins and outs.
Best of luck for the future Joe.
March 22, 2014 at 11:48 #472881He was not my favourite jockey, but I spoke to him a couple of times over the years and, as mentioned above, he was a thoroughly nice chap.
Other than his dad, his rides seemed to be drying up, so probably the best time to go.
Good luck for the future.March 22, 2014 at 12:28 #472886I’d be a bit worried about Cue Card.
Joe Tizzard is not exactly old and wouldn’t want to give up the ride on this exciting horse.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 22, 2014 at 12:47 #472889Makes it even sadder that Cue Card didn’t get to take his chance at Cheltenham this year. I like the Tizzards and I’m glad to see Joe retire in one piece. I wonder if we’ll see a lot more jockeys retiring younger in future, given the attrition rate these days.
March 22, 2014 at 12:50 #472891I’d be a bit worried about Cue Card.

March 22, 2014 at 13:16 #472892It’s probably not too bad for Cue Card. Joe always comes across as very modest about his riding. Maybe he feels it will help the horse overall to let a Brendan Powell or someone else do the steering.
Joe Tizzard always comes across as a very nice person when interviewed. Taking time to mention Joe Lively after Cue Card won the Ryanair was a very classy touch in particular.
