Hi
John Egan is a class jockey, and as good as anyone.
But his, deception of a ride on Royal Jet was criminal.
What chance have we got if they are going to pull strokes like that.  It was shameful.

March 24, 2007 at 21:11 #48453Totally agree, carlisle.
March 24, 2007 at 21:50 #48456It takes a special skill to find trouble all the way in a 5 horse race.
March 24, 2007 at 22:03 #48457I don’t think it’s technically skill Wallace, that would come in in making it a little less obvious.
March 25, 2007 at 02:30 #48459This seems ro me to be a pocket-talkers convention
March 25, 2007 at 06:03 #48460Hi davidjohnson
you couldn’t be more wrong.  I defy you to make a case in defence of John Egan.

March 25, 2007 at 12:40 #48462I’ve watched the race a couple of times now and can’t see anything wrong with the ride at all.
March 25, 2007 at 14:42 #48465Sailing Shoes, you have got to be joking. I did not have a bet in the race but totally agree with carlisle on this. Egan took every opportunity to run his horse into trouble. One of the worst rides I have ever seen.
March 25, 2007 at 16:41 #48468The race was very slowly run – at the crucial part of the race Royal Jet was checked – end of story.
I’m interested to know other peoples views on this (race can be viewed on ATTHERACES.com), because if people think this was one of the worst rides they have ever seen – they want to try riding in one of these slowly run affairs around a difficult track.
March 25, 2007 at 18:18 #48470Desperately, ahem, unlucky again in a small field on Chicken Soup at Kempton. I was a layer of both horses for what it’s worth.
March 25, 2007 at 18:27 #48473With an ear to the ground the whispers were audible.
March 25, 2007 at 18:37 #48474Hi Sailing Shoes,
I think John Egan is a really good rider, but similar to certain others, there’s always going to be a question mark over him, & imo rightly so.
Rather than watch the race video from yesterday. Try & find the clip of John Egan and Kieran Fallon talking to an undercover reporter posing as an Arab Sheikh. Maybe make a judgement about the ride after seeing that.
I didn’t back anything, but fwiw I thought Kames Park had a decent enough chance anyway. The race was always likely to be a repeat of last weeks one, where KP just quicked up really well off a slow place.
Can understand the people who backed Royal Jet being unhappy.
March 25, 2007 at 18:46 #48476I’m judging the ride on it’s merits Colin. If i’d have backed the horse I would have been unhappy – not with the ride – just with the way the race panned out.
There are much worse rides out there only a daily basis.

Why did you lay them Rory?
March 25, 2007 at 19:20 #48481I watched this race a couple of times and all I saw was a hold up horse which got cut off in it’s run a couple of times, and then simply didn’t have the acceleration to go with the first two in the short straight. The tendency at Lingfield is for horses to fan out coming into the straight, so Royal Jet might be considered unfortunate to get tightened up.
Royal Jet’s previous record of 2/21 suggests he’s not the easiest to win with. He’s generally been held up to come late, a tactic which needs the run of the race.

March 25, 2007 at 19:30 #48483I’ve learnt the hard way not to oppose horses from certain yards when being punted off the boards even when the prices are very skinny, but when the same horses are not so strong in the market, I find they don’t tend to win and make the frame a lot less that you’d expect. Small field races tend to be very tactical (often with more trouble in running than the norm) and I like to oppose class with nous unless the market suggests that the jolly will be getting his own way up front.
John Egan looks like a tactical genius when he needs to win but finds an awful lot of trouble when victory is less important. Or so it can seem.
March 25, 2007 at 19:35 #48486All fair points rory.
So what that was your take on the ride given to Royal Jet?
