I still think this programme could do a lot better.
Pro’s
Chapman – The programme needs characters.
Luke Harvey – Sensible analysis.
Coverage from a number of courses.Con’s
The music.
The Irish lads – They would be more at home at Leopardstown or the Curragh.
Too many presenter’s, and not very good ones at that. The two in the Pro’s box above are okay, but the programme needs another strong character. Why have at least TWELVE people there.
Richard Hoiles – Needs to take a breath. Does not have to jabber away for the whole race. Monotone voice.
Too much about one horse on the day, the other owners must be fed up with them banging on about other horses. Chamberlin is terrible for that.February 20, 2021 at 10:27 #1523743Did Chapman buy that coat from Arthur Daley ?
February 20, 2021 at 11:55 #1523764Father it’s not a full Daley look without a trilby ….and remember the world’s your lobster
February 20, 2021 at 23:12 #1523904I never watch it – I actually prefer watching the racing on my iPhone via whatever plstform I have had a bet on the race on.
Oh, and I always watch on mute – silence is golden.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 6, 2021 at 16:59 #1527652Nice to see Kelso taking centre stage on ITV racing this afternoon.
I used to really enjoy my visits there and certainly the best course north of the artificial border.
March 6, 2021 at 17:16 #1527656Live footage with no audio of Fitzy’s private phone call with Trevor Hemmings was a particular highlight today.

March 8, 2021 at 00:02 #1527909I’m really pleased to see Kelso getting so much coverage. Having said that, I hope it doesn’t get too posh. I loved it how it was before. Is it the only racecourse in the country where, if you look down the course from the stands, there is actually a church steeple in the distance? And they’ve ploughed up the fields where, on racedays there used to be a couple of horses that ran up and down the field with the excitement of it all. I wonder where they’ve gone. Can’t wait to go back there one day. And I hope they never ban dogs as it’s the only course all three of us can go too. The last dog was quite happy left on her own when we went racing but this one would wreck the house.
March 13, 2021 at 14:13 #1529366Just watched the Lady Wufruna Stakes from Wolverhampton and my god they don’t half come out with some crap!
March 13, 2021 at 15:57 #1529374Too many poor presenters and pundits. Cumani doesn’t seem to know the difference between a fence and a hurdle and Chamberlin is little better, neither is knowledgeable enough. Why have those 2 when you could have Luck & Hislop?
And they really are scraping the bottom of the barrel with pundits like Leonna Mayor and the non stop stream of brainless stats c/o Tanya Stevenson.March 13, 2021 at 22:14 #1529409Leonna Major really seemed not to know who was running in The Gold Cup when asked this morning.
March 14, 2021 at 06:34 #1529416Apologies if I have bored you all with my take on ITV Racing before but….
We live in a world that is mostly better than it was in the 1970s: medical advances, the advent of the internet etc – most change = progress.
Most, but not all.
In the 1970s, ITV Racing had a wonderfully compact format – the ITV7 on World Of Sport, two presenters at two venues, two commentators, one guy going the betting shows and results, two basic Outside Broadcast Units, all producing seven rapid-fire races every 15 minutes over the course of a couple of hours.
No posh, know-nothing, eye candy “pundits” (I use the term in the loosest possible sense), no nauseating “social stable,” no endless queue of presenters who all know less than the average racing fan, all ready to regale us with, at best, what we already know and, at worst, nonsense.
And no absurd aerial blimps, cameras zooming in on any horse that goes a length clear so you can’t see the end of the race properly, just competent functional camera work and direction that allowed you to see the race.
ITV Racing in 2021 is a catastrophic fail and the only way I will survive Cheltenham without lobbing a brick at my telly will be to do what I always do – have it on mute and only pay attention between coming under starters orders and passing the winning post.

Matt Chapman is very good when playing it straight- he brings a good knowledge of history and form to counteract some of the fluff to which the show is prone- and I don’t mind his strong opinions but in “character” mode he always reminds me of the Brendan Gleeson character’s comment in In Bruges – “Just try not to say anything too loud or crass”.
Like in the Opening Show yesterday when he would have preferred Bryony on Malaya (which I agreed with) but explained :
Matt: “She can just..caress…”
Rest of panel “Shut up Chappers”Or when somebody pondered Al Boum Photo’s chance and he just shot them down with “Nobody cares. If that wins everyone will have forgotten about it 5 minutes after the race”.
Yeah great, I’m sure if he does the hat trick his groom will be leading him up delighted to know that “nobody cares” and the owners who have poured a load of money into the game over the past couple of years, ditto. On the plus side, the little “homeschooling” section is good- short and sweet- and I hope they keep that up in some form.

Well said that man. In particular the fence before the home straight at Doncaster gets my goat, as Ronnie Barker would say.
March 14, 2021 at 12:57 #1529466I have all but given up with ITV racing now, for most of the reasons that Ian Davies has stated above. To sum up; it has just been dumbed down too far by trying to attract non race going audiences.
I nowadays only watch races that I have had a bet in using either Exchange or Bookmakers streams.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysMarch 14, 2021 at 14:47 #1529487I thought that was a dreadful thing to say about the horse green and for the reasons that you mentioned what an insult to the yard and all the work they have put in this year for their horse. I really hope that Al Boum Photo DOTS up and whoever said that (I was looking away at the time and missed who it was) gets to follow the horse back to the winners enclosure and his stable with a bucket and spade for mucking out duties. I’m afraid the whole lot of them are totally up their own derrières one trying to outdo the other and they’re all dreadful tipsters.
Watching racing from Meydan on Thursday on their local channel. Laura King and her co presenters are so professional. They talk most of the time in the background whilst we see shots of the horses and after the race you see the horse led into the winners enclosure dismounted and the prizegiving after each race. No dreary banter just professional and interesting presentation.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 14, 2021 at 20:53 #1529536Some quite harsh criticism here (some certainly justified). I think we have a rather rose-tinted memory of TV coverage in the past though. I remember being irritated by individuals spouting a whole load of bo**ocks, even as a teen. Richard Pitman was a notable offender but there were others. Peter Scudamore was a great jockey but possibly the most boring racing pundit ever (until AP). Overall, I think ITV is doing a good job. Too many pundits (we all have our views on who is expendable and I certainly have mine) and I absolutely hate the “artistic” camera angles. The latter started with Channel 4 though, who seemed to employ people who would clearly rather be making pop videos. Much of the “dumbing down” isn’t for me (though agree about the “home schooling” being a good feature) but new audiences have to come from somewhere and we can’t rely on the sons & daughters of those already involved in the industry forever. Ideally it would be part of a general sports programme (how many of us got interested in racing because it was on while our dad waited for the wrestling or football results?) but, with sports rights for most events being the preserve of pay-to-view, those days have sadly gone. Overall, it is essential that racing remains on terrestrial channels and, if we want racing to survive, we need to support ITV. To be fair, they seem open to criticism so make your views known to them!
March 14, 2021 at 22:08 #1529542Racing TV has its faults too. Lydia Hislop’s over use of the word ‘interesting’ drives me mad and I can’t watch her when she talks about the horses in the parade ring. Too many horses are ‘interesting’ to her. She’s been a lot better on the podcasts with Ruby, using more varied vocabulary.
And there’s an Irish fella, who just mumbles, can’t think of his name off the top of his head, he is terrible to my ears.I will be switching between the 2 channels during the build ups, won’t watch the actual races with the Hoiles commentary, I will watch the races on Racing TV.
