Because I can’t stand all the TV advertising for racing. All of them are so bad and so frequent. The worst three in my opinion are the William Hill, with the young man with a blond beard and an open mouth and the really bad interspersation of Tony McCoy’s face, the Cheltenham “Roar“ and the one that finishes with Ed Chamberlain. I actually switch off when they appear..

It’s not just you – I can think of at least one person who holds the same view on this.

I sort of mentally tune them out.

The only one that bugs me at the moment is the one for responsible gambling by BetFred, where Uncle Fred gives us a nice talk about all the tools we can use to keep it safe and fun. But does not tell you how much he will restrict you if it stops being fun for him.

He says “in shop”. I wonder if anyone actually asks in the shop about howw they can give up gambling?

    “he will restrict you”

If only it was just that.

I opened an account, had ONE bet – it was a Special three-way market on a race and I backed an outcome at 5/2 which was hammered into 10/11 but didn’t actually win – then never had a bet over the entire Cheltenham Festival (he was never top price anything I wanted to back) so I was closed down outright on the Saturday morning.

I’d like to see you go up to that “southern twat” Ray Winstone (bet365) and have a pop

And Paddy Power – think i’ve mentioned this before, but for all their brash advertising they’re not v generous on allowing a decent e/w on a long shot. The website ‘told me’, last Cheltenham that i could only have a max of £1.50 e/w on a 66/1 shot! No thanks and i aint used ’em since.

    Succinctly put.

    Wilts.

I’d drop rhino stoppers on him if he started “marffin off” about how 365 are the worlds biggest bookmaker.

If it’s important to him, it’s important to me………………. To get him in a choke hold and starve him of oxygen for 15 minutes.

I agree most of the ads are deeply irritating. However, I’m another person who seems to be able to tune out adverts, almost as if I have my own internal mute button!

I presume the adverts are deemed a success if they attract losing punters i.e. people who are happy taking risks but don’t have great judgement. The content of many of the adverts suggests they are aimed at either the terminally dim or the “lad” market, so they probably achieve the required objectives.

I often wish I had an internal mute button.

One can mute the coverage off-course, but if one goes racing one is hostage to the tannoy all afternoon.

I contemplated going to Lingfield Park today, didn’t, and knew I’d made the right decision when I found out who the commentator was.

    A lucky escape!

I absolutely agree with this assessment and would add that on this particular “venn diagram” there is quite a large intersection between the two sets you have identified!

Apparently gambling makes up 18% of all adverts
