Secret Gesture is out after suffering a knock. To be honest, the trainer seemed a bit unsure about her as it was, and I wouldn’t have fancied her anyway. Ralph Beckett said he was stunned when Talent beat her at Epsom and I must admit I was confident Secret Gesture was a good thing that day.
Talent and Riposte are generally about 5/2 at the head of the market and as much as I want to take Talent on, I can’t find a lively outsider at all. If all goes well with Talent on Saturday, it is stated she’ll be trained for the St Leger.
I would probably have chanced Alive Alive Oh as an improver but she seems ground dependent and was also pulled out for being in season. Perhaps she’ll make hay in the autumn under different surface conditions. The usual O’Brien lucky dip mixture amongst the others, buy 2, get 1 free and still not get the winner!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

July 20, 2013 at 00:08 #446035Ok guys i’m going to give you a break! I got the Irish DErby horribly wrong so going to give you my selection in the Oaks so you can swerve that one

I’ve looked at the form and the only Group 1 performer is Talent (appreciate the French horse was placed but she was beaten well by 4Lengths). I know the English Oaks form has taken a few dents but she could only beat what was put in front of her and she was convincing So it’s Talent to show her true Talent and win the Oaks convincingly!
Good luck to all
July 20, 2013 at 08:24 #446056Needless to say it’s Riposte for me.

TALENT..all the way for me too.
Not much time to say more rushing off to Newmarket now, but will be tuning into William Hill Radio to listen to the race after racing tonight.
Glad to see that she hasn’t to run against her stable companion Secret Gesture, it’s all about Talent and she has it in spades.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 20, 2013 at 13:30 #446096I fancy the O’Brien horse ridden by Heffernan.
July 20, 2013 at 17:42 #446112Well done to the French filly who looks quirky but talented.
Really disappointing run from Talent. This is the first year i can remember that the Epsom Derby and Oaks form is not worth a jot!!
July 20, 2013 at 18:02 #446113Just call me Mr Lucky. I wasn’t going to have a bet today but spotted Pearl Of Africa in the 4.10 at The Curragh so headed to Ladbrokes. I had a bet on that one and a double on John Gosden’s Narmin and Alive Alive Oh , with Chiquita as sub if former was a non-runner. I thought Chiquita was held but she found a spurt late on despite wandering. Riposte didn’t seem to last home today and Talent looks like her impressive Epsom win may have been a flash in the pan with the form in tatters. Obviously there will be a rush to get behind Chiquita’s 4l conqueror in the French Oaks, Treve, next time she runs but I’d be a bit careful of this year’s 3yo crop against their elders.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 20, 2013 at 22:23 #446126Well done Steve for your win with Chiquita, must admit I never got past Talent and Riposte for todays Irish Oaks but it looks like Talent, who Richard Hughes stated did nothing at home has transferred her laziness to the racecourse.
However, you can’t really rule out either Riposte or Talent for one bad run, there could have been a number of factors involved and both seemed to have been dropped out maybe saved for another day. Let’s hope Sky Lantern another lazy filly at home manages to get over her Falmouth beatings on the course and on the nose (ouch
) to take the Nassau at Goodwood the week after next.Had a nice few winners at Newmarket today notably Midnight Flower, Waila and Narmin who run a blinder to beat Godolphin’s Satwa Story, but put Satwa Story in your notebook Steve a magnificent colt by Street Cry he looked amazing in the paddock and was expected to win today

JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 20, 2013 at 23:47 #446127I’ve only watched it once but Talent looked to pulling quite hard early on and the pace and tempo of the race was different to that of Epsom, I would be incline to forgive. Riposte was in a great position but didn’t seem to accelerate like she did at Ascot, would of probably wanted a faster race early doors aswell to perhaps take the sting out of the finishers.

July 21, 2013 at 05:23 #446129I think Riposte may have benefited from a stronger early pace but when all is said and done she probably ran to her best and wasn’t quite good enough on the day. I’m disappointed for my friends but at least the horse made a proper fist of it. I’d rather see a horse beaten fair and square than be left feeling that the jockey didn’t get the best from it or that it was unlucky in running.
She was to be aimed at the Yorkshire Oaks next but I’m not sure whether they’ll stick to that plan now.
If she does run I’ll probably give her another chance.
July 21, 2013 at 05:25 #446130BTW Well done to those who tipped up the French horse. Mr Caution must have uncompromising photos of the stewards or summat! He’s been involved in more enquiries than Poirot over the past month.
July 21, 2013 at 15:26 #446156Hammy, If you hear the klaxon sounding, you know I’m involved LOL
There wasn’t much in it yesterday, I had a quick look at the replay and then put the golf back on.
Talent was ominously weak in the betting I thought, and since the Oaks, and the subsequent poor performers, I have been keen to take her on. Ralph Beckett also stated she was more precocious than Secret Gesture, perhaps suggesting she wouldn’t improve as much as her in the long term. I think the win at Epsom, and the manner of it, took the stable by surprise, it was certainly a sore result for me, on the second horse ante-post at 25/1 win only!
Riposte is a likeable sort but I couldn’t get enthused about the Ribblesdale form and I thought she was about half the odds she should have been yesterday. My gut feeling is she might not be a group 1 horse but there is still time for her. With Chiquita finally off the mark and seemingly getting the trip well, she might improve further if she loses her wayward tendencies. I’d back her to confirm the form with these when all things are considered. Perhaps she’d be one who might turn up at the Breeder’s Cup and be in with a great shout.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 21, 2013 at 21:31 #446178May I state the obvious?
At Group 1 Level, the winner is the only one to take from the race. She won on merit despite hanging badly in a blanket finish.
Simple?
July 24, 2013 at 13:49 #446389The winner exhibited that crazy streak that many of the Montjeus carry(some more, some less) in their bloodline.

Hammy, my main bet after Ektihaam today was Tropics in the dash at York. Bing, bong Stewards enquiry was called but when your luck’s in it’s in
