“Gaelic couldn’t get near the winner”
One loves Leopardstown, one doesn’t
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 2, 2026 at 16:50 #1753333True Ruby however he’ll be going slower and will have more time to recover
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 2, 2026 at 16:54 #1753334”Is it possible that either last years Gold Cup was just not very good and we got overexcited by it or they both just ended each other? Galopin is miles off it this season too.”
The DRF left it’s mark on Galopin last season and Iknowthewayurthinkin just ran the race of his life at a track he loves. I think it was below par Gold Cup.
The likes of Fact To File, Gaelic Warrior, Jango Baie and The Jukebox Man are all top horses in their prime so I think it’s a better race this time.
I still think Galopin could’ve won the Gold Cup last season if Willie had Prioritised it. It should’ve been the Savils or Tramore and then straight to Cheltenham to equal history. He had no need to be in the John Durkan or at the DRF.
Running at Punchestown in May has clearly left it’s mark for this season also.Very greedy connections. They never ever gave this horse a break.

I think FTF will beat Gaelic Warrior at Cheltenham again but at Punchestown, I’d be favouring Gaelic Warrior heavily.
February 2, 2026 at 16:58 #1753336He jumped around fine Hughsie , sorry no excuses Gaelic had every chance today and like the KG he failed to win
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026

Just swap jockeys and you know who’ll be first past the post.
February 2, 2026 at 17:06 #1753339Ruby that’s nonsense , Gaelic ran pretty much next to FTF , when Walsh said go Gaelic had no answer , wouldn’t have mattered if Ruby or AP had rode him , Paul rose at Kempton … still got beat
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 2, 2026 at 17:07 #1753340Paul will ride Galopin come March
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 2, 2026 at 17:14 #1753342Yes no excuses that Gaelic is 2-1 up on FtF this season

He was only beaten a short head and Townend got his whip stuck. Those couple of strides cost him the race. Just another in the long list of feck ups from Townend this season.
February 2, 2026 at 17:29 #1753346Lol Hughsie I’d say JP won the one that mattered more , he also ran and won at the festival last year , Gaelic wad primed for the autumn , FTF the spring , FTF is the better 3 miler
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 2, 2026 at 17:59 #1753352Spoke to Ben Pauling straight after the Irish Gold Cup as most the trainers were watching the race on the big screen at Kempton. He said Mullins will probably throw yet another into the ring but he feels pretty confident his boy can take them all on.
February 2, 2026 at 18:14 #1753355He has every right to be, if his horse can stay he’s got a great chance
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 2, 2026 at 18:17 #1753357GW pulled too hard today and still ran on after the last so there was an excuse of sorts but the worry would be that he is very much likely to do the same in the Gold Cup, unless they ride him cold out the back (which is not really the tactics you want to employ in a race like that).
Have a question re FTF, outside of his John Durkan win over Spillane’s Tower, it would appear that every time he comes off the bridle and has to get into a real dog fight that he pretty much comes off second best (this year’s John Durkan, last year’s Irish Gold Cup and 2024 Savills Chase prime examples). His big wins (Brown Advisory, Ryanair and today) have seen him pretty much cruise through a race and not be hard ridden after the last to win (he did receive a couple of smacks after the last today but that was just to encourage).
If he is already off the bridle and being ridden turning for home with two to jump in a Gold Cup, I am not convinced that he will find enough if it comes down to him really having to dig deep and outbattle/outstay his rivals to win.
Therefore, is he more of a bridle horse that in the latter stages of a race has to be cruising over his rivals in order to win?
February 2, 2026 at 18:18 #1753358“I hope Inothewayurthinkin is okay, but I still don’t know why he was asked to jump that fence when already 80 lengths behind”.
Agree ERL. I have just watched the replay and it is disgraceful he was asked to jump the last. The horse was out on his feet.
Donoghue has said the horse was fine but emptied just two strides before the last but I find that difficult to believe.
February 2, 2026 at 18:19 #1753359Why didn’t the British come over for the Irish Gold Cup?

I saw the clip when he walked away from his fall with an awkward tail carriage. I hope no pelvic issues will arise. But, apart from that what does the future hold for him? A try at a X-Country Chase?
