Well, well, well…. you gotta love the Irish gambles. This horse was rated 93 going into the race, he should be raised about 25 to 30 lbs for cantering throughout the race and Adam Wedge not moving a single muscle.

Unless you were in on it, you would have to be a TURKEY voting for Christmas to be saying “good on ’em for landing a gamble!” after the opener at Ascot.

Every punter who did their dough backing something other than the winner was turned over just as surely as the bookies were.

Every punter who did their dough backing something other than the winner had the option of backing it and chose not to.

In 11 races over jumps Ardhill has been seriously raced once, Limerick in November 2020. Presumably the stewards will ‘note’ Mr Elliott’s expalnation and it will be forgotten about. The trainer has been taking the p*** out of the authorities for the past year so we can hardly expect him to suddenly change…

Nothing in the BHA Stewards’ Report so far.

It didn’t look good, and bore zero resemblance to the form book.

If we want a sport where the form book means nothing and you should just follow the money then this is fine.

You didn’t need have to have followed the game for over 40 years (as I have) to have known from the market this horse was fancied today.

But if there are punters who think there are no integrity issues to address, then why should the BHA bother their backsides about it?

Stewards finally roused themselves enough to take an interest:

The apparent improvement in form of the winner, ARDHILL (IRE), compared with its previous recent form in Ireland was considered. Gordon Elliott was interviewed by telephone and the trainer’s representative was also present in the enquiry. Elliott’s comments that ARDHILL (IRE) appeared to have benefitted from the application of first-time blinkers, which had allowed the gelding to travel better on this occasion, and had also appreciated the better ground, which was officially described as Good to Soft, Soft in places, with the majority of ARDHILL (IRE)’s recent runs having come on Heavy ground, were noted. The gelding was routine tested.

Ian, it didn’t look good at all. This is no Monday meeting at Plumpton or Ayr, it was a pretty decent race at a very decent NH track. To win in this manner after 11 non-runs prior to today surely raises questions that have to be answered. Especially from a horse trained by Gordon Elliott.

By the way, it was not the new headgear. That’s b******s

The Stewards would accept the explanation if connections said the horse seemed to appreciate the change from original to chocolate Ready Brek.

I have been out and not seen the race. I put him up in the Saturday tipping competition because I thought it noteworthy that Elliot had chosen to run this horse (when I am sure he could have run several others) and put headgear on for the first time.

Alas, I did not back him – unless being the first leg in a Lucky 15 counts (with legs 2 and 3 beaten, the last one due off in a few minute.

Not completely surprised he hacked up because Irish horses keep on doing it and the stewards appear not to care.

Ardhill is one of nine Gordon Elliott entries for the Pertemps Hurdle Qualifier at Warwick on Saturday – he’s been raised 19lbs by the UK handicapper for his hard fought success at Ascot.

There are also two Emmet Mullins entries in the £100k Lanzarote Hurdle, one of which (Winter Fog) was a close 2nd/27 at Leopardstown over Xmas. The Irish handicapper raised hin 3lbs to 131 for that – over here he’s been put on 138. His other entry is Rightplacerighttime, who started 11/4 fav for the valuable 3M hurdle on Betfair Chase day at Haydock and finished 6th, seeming not to stay. He gets in here off the same mark again, 125.

Elliott also has three entries in the 3M handicap chase at Kempton, as well as two in the closing handicap hurdle, one of which is the appropriately named Top Bandit.

Nothing to argue about him being a point winner. But strange that he was 200/1 and 300/1 in a chase.
Then, when the money has to come, the turnaround is there….. and he wins as he likes to

Ruby clearly i’d say on this occasion something was probably wrong with the horse and has been fixed during his break- the ptp 2nd is 117 in UK. 3rd- 130.

He’s went into an incredibly poor event at Naas where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th behind him have been stone useless.

You also can’t tell me things like this don’t happen in the UK. Horses come back from disappointing plenty of times having had issues fixed.

The British trainers are all perfect and never ever land gambles or train winners after a few 0’s on their form………… This whole UK/IRE stuff gets boring after awhile.

A frankly ridiculous comment given the horses form

No punter in their right mind picks that based on form

Form isn’t the only criterion used by punters.

Look at your own selections: do you always pick the “form” horse?

Ardhill is a particularly interesting one i have to admit. His point form made him absolutely THROWN in. Valleres 133, Bardenstown Lad 135, Pats Fancy, Hes a Hardy Bloke all in and around him….

By the end of last season, Ardhill’s mark had fallen enough for him to just about sneak in at the bottom of the weights for this season’s reppearance in a handicap at the Down Royal meeting where Gordy loves winners. He was terribly unfortunate to sustain a stone bruise and be withdrawn after a Charles Byrnes horse bred for stamina was declared for the Down Royal race- stepped up to 3m for the first time with a hot 5lb claimer on board and starting 5-2 fav in a 20 runner race (and amusingly beaten into 2nd place in the end).

It’s about time wind ops had to be declared in Ireland I reckon.
