Jim is complaining now about the ground. It seems that his horse was leaning into the rail.If I recall correctly that was how he ran in the heavy ground last year so the ground should not be used as an excuse for getting beaten. The horse is not a miler pure and simple. So on to the Derby and we will see what we will see.But will he be over the top (like Finsceal Beo was last year), since he was trained specially for the English Guineas?
May 24, 2008 at 16:29 #165124New Approach looked to be running with an awkward head carriage, possibly due to his tongue being out of the right side of his mouth and the bit being incorrectly positioned.
I think the Irish Derby is the correct option for him as I don’t think he’d be at all suited by Epsom and I think that is probably teh view of the Bolger camp.May 24, 2008 at 16:37 #165127Its easy to knock New Approach but lets not forget he’s still finished second in two Guineas thats hardly a failure. He’s just not as good over a mile on fast ground as Henrythenavigator simple as that. No Henry and New Approach would’ve won two Guineas with a gap back to the second on both ocassions and would still be being hailed as a superstar.
May 24, 2008 at 16:39 #165128Aye Flash but Henry WAS there and New Approach was well and truly circumnavigated.
May 24, 2008 at 16:45 #165130I’ve got no desite to Henrythenavigator in the Derby. He’s a miler, let’s hope he goes for the St James’ Palace.
May 24, 2008 at 16:52 #165132Is he or is he not some genius when it comes to getting horses ready. Who would have thought last year that he would win both guineas?I believe he is getting ready to take on Godolfin at their favorite race course this year. They bought up all the competition so here we go to ASCOT.

Lol Indeed he was.
Very impressive Henrythenavigator, he’ll take some beating on decent ground.
May 24, 2008 at 17:33 #165145New Approach ! I think so, indeed !
Twice bitten… forever shy.
Hats off Henrythenavigator – brilliant miler – but if he wins the Derby, I’ll eat the first thing that comes to hand.. Won’t stay.

Why shouldn’t a trainer say something he considers to have caused the horse not to run to form?
It was exactly what I was thinking after the race. Carrying his head to one side as though not likeing the ground. Also had tongue out, another possible excuse. Did not travel with anywhere near the fluency of previous runs. Where as Henry has a flowing top-of-the-ground action.
Will you be saying the same thing about Henry if he is beaten on soft and Aiden says the ground was aginst him? Or when H fails to stay in the Derby?
If trainers do not say when they believe something was against their chance, it makes it harder for us punters to know the reasons for a poor run. Especially when evaluating form for a future race.
You are entitled to your opinion Andyod, but so is Jim Bolger.New Approach may be suited by further, but it is no gimme for 1 1/2 miles with his way of running (IMO).

Indeed.
I will be accompanied everywhere I go by a chocolate eclair, just in case the impossible happens.
May 24, 2008 at 17:50 #165149The only way I can see Henry winning the Derby is if he does not need to stay. If there is no top class 1 1/2 mile animal running. Without High Chapperel, Hawk Wing would’ve won easing up.

Value Is EverythingMay 24, 2008 at 17:50 #165150Jim bolger stated in the racing post and in a interview that the ground no matter what it was like would not be a problem for new approach, and now he’s moaning.Cant he just accept that his horse was beaten by a better horse
May 24, 2008 at 17:59 #165152With watering like it is these days, doubt if he was expecting FIRM, good-firm yes, but not firm. Anyway Bolger is entitled to change his mind. Had never run on firm before so nobody knew if he’d go on it for certain. Before the race he probably did think he’d go on it. But now there is more evidence.
I think New Approach is yet to run to his best two year old form, put up on a soft surface. Whether that is due to the ground or temperament, am in two minds. Even at his best am unsure whether NA’d beat HTN, probably ground dependant.Mark
Value Is EverythingMay 24, 2008 at 18:03 #165153The times were markedly slower than 12 months ago – none of them was even near to Racing Post standard time – and the wind, I am told, was not all that strong. I doubt it was anything like "a road" out there.
May 24, 2008 at 18:04 #165154New Approach never looked comfortable at any point in the race in my opinion. Henrythenavigator is a decent horse, and deserved to win today.

There was a strong wind at The Curragh today….whats more when the ground gets very firm times begin to drop because horses do not let themselves down on it. All the jockeys (not just Jim Bolger) reported the ground to be very fast with the ground being described as "like a road" by more than one jockey.
May 24, 2008 at 19:36 #165157New Approach has always had a tendency to carry his head like that.
On really soft ground New Approach may turn the tables but if he were mine he would be going over 10-12f straight away.
