"This is like Finsceal Beo all over again"…. except that Finsceal Beo won the Irish Guineas, whereas you are suggesting that New Approach won’t?
and english 1000,
May 20, 2008 at 11:38 #164524Although I’m really hoping that either Henry (slight preference) or New Approach win, I think it’s quite possible that either Famous Name or Jupiter Pluvius could spring a (mild?) surprise.
Amused that Luminaire is supposedly running on his own merit. Never having seen a racecourse before, he must be showing a lot at home!
[/img]May 20, 2008 at 11:47 #164529Uh huh. I forget about Famous Name. Maybe time to analyse the 2,000 Guineas in closer detail as I really, really, really like Famous Name.
May 20, 2008 at 13:27 #164548Famous Name needs soft ground, or good-to-soft at the very least, and I can’t see conditions deteriorating to that degree between now and Saturday.
Only a handful of runners can be seriously considered for the race, and much will depend on how many marbles Jim Bolger loses in the next few days. New Approach, for me, should win, with Henrythenavigator and Ibn Khaldun the only likely dangers.
Jupiter Pluvius, Great War Eagle, Famous Name, Nownownow, Stubbs Art, Sammy The Snake (why Brendan Duke has put him in is beyond me) and Luminaire (some of Bolger’s marbles went when entering him) are already ‘also rans’.

Brave statement….
May 20, 2008 at 15:16 #164557A first time out horse has won the Irish 2000 in the past
Ballymore owned by Meg Mullion and trained by Darkie
May 20, 2008 at 15:33 #164558The last 8 or 9 have been won by a horse who contested either the English or French equivalent. I won’t be looking any further than that.
May 20, 2008 at 19:27 #164600I wonder if Galileo will be given an odds on chance of winning the guineas?
May 20, 2008 at 20:19 #164602Thanks for the memories.I was talking to MM recently and he said he was about to become first jockey to Darkie when he had the accident that ended his career.
May 20, 2008 at 21:32 #164608Has Ibn Khaldun been confirmed for this?
May 21, 2008 at 00:19 #164616Jupiter Pluvius, Great War Eagle, Famous Name, Nownownow, Stubbs Art, Sammy The Snake (why Brendan Duke has put him in is beyond me) and Luminaire (some of Bolger’s marbles went when entering him) are already ‘also rans’.
Bold, but fair. If Jupiter Pluvius were of the standard that Henrythenavigator shows then I’m not sure why Coolmore would run both.
Henrythenavigator and New Approach can win but Henry is going to continue improving as his dam did, and New Approach will be more eager to stretch out now IMO. Ibn Khaldun can be forgiven from Newmarket but there is plenty to turn on form.
I’ll try and make a case for Famous Name, going aside

I love the horse, and I’m still not convinced about the premier 2YOs of last season.
May 21, 2008 at 13:25 #164684perhaps they like to take home the money for second place and give the horse a chance to mature at the same time.Montjues seem to settle with more racing.they will probably send 3 or4 over for the derby so perhaps they don’t know enough about JP yet, after all unlike Vincent they don’t have Lester to tell them which horse is best.
May 24, 2008 at 01:13 #165030The morning quotes downunder have New Approach at 11-10 and Henry 9-4. The rest are 8-1 and longer.
Raceday is about to begin here so I’ll need to investigate Famous Name’s chances later on. The softer conditions of France look more ideal to suit him than a good-to-firm Curragh, personally. But … I love his looks and his nature of performance. He is "God’s Professional Athlete" to me.
May 24, 2008 at 03:38 #165035I doubt Famous Name will run given the ground. If you can get 9/4 Henry with him in or 2/1 without him get your dollars on Mr Deering!

Though it’s not something I’d bet on, the stiffer Curragh track and the lessons learned from Newmarket tip the balance in favour of New Approach imo.
Jim Bolger to again show that he understands his horses better than his detractors, just as he did last year in the fillies’ version with Finsceal Beo.May 24, 2008 at 07:59 #165045The current trends lead me to believe the going will be good-to-soft and suit Famous Name enough.
May 24, 2008 at 08:49 #165053In The Racing Post’s Verdict for this race it says [i:2lamxz9h]’it is possible that [New Approach] was prepared for his first Classic assignment with a prolonged campaign in mind, and may have a little more potential for improvement than a rival who looked very well tuned for the day’.[/i:2lamxz9h]
I’m confused: have they got the names mixed-up? I’m not saying that he’s wrong but it’s the opposite of the general consensus.
