I recently did a Google search for information about THE DARK HORSE SECRET by Weston Fairbanks, who was a successful horse player 30+ years ago in the USA.
I found the system on sale for $42 and being tight, carried on searching, and on an American forum found a snippet on what the method was about.
*****************************************************************
THE DARK HORSE SECRET Weston Fairbankswgt / odds/ # / total
(1)124 / 3.50 / 20 / 23.50
(2)124 / 3.75 / 19 / 22.75
(2)124/ 12.50 / 18 / 30.50
(3)(5)120 / 2.90 / 16 / 18.90
(2,3)120 / 7.50 / 15 / 22.50
(2,3)(5)120 / 8.10 / 14 / 22.10
(3)(5)114 / 4.90 / 14 / 18.90(1) highest weight with lowest odds assigned 20
(2) same weight as highest, in odds order, -1 incrementally in assignment #
(3) next weight, subtract diff in weight from 20 to get assigned #
(4) add odds and # to get total
(5) play longest odds of 3 lowest total (I changed the rules see example below)usually not a good play where all carry same weight.
*****************************************************************The first race I handicapped shown in the example below, it picked out the winner, I thought that’s a good start.
A couple of days later I handicapped 2 more races and guess what, it came up with 2 winners again, in one of the handicaps it came up with the complete outsider who had no current form, and who’s odds were 16/1 when rating the race, and he later won at 25/1.
*****************************************************************
Example: 2.50 Brighton 18/7/13.
Proofed on another Forum, prior to race being run…Blue Deer (IRE) 133 9-7 /8/1/ 20/ 28
As Blue dear has the top weight of 133 on his own, you award the master rating of 20 (or whatever you want) plus his odds of 8/1 giving him a points total of 20 + 8/1 = 28
**********************************************************************************************************
If by any chance you have 3 top weights of 133 you have to place them in odds order i.e
red 133 4/1
blue 133 8/1
yellow 133 20/1so you have red with top weight of 20 + 4/1 = 24
As blue and yellow have joing top weights with red you have to incrementally deduct a pound each from 20.
Blue 20 -1 (19) + 8/1 = 27
yellow 20 -2 (18) + 20/1 = 38****************************************************************************************************************
Squirrel Wood (IRE) 132 9-6 / 4/1/ 19/ 23
Squirrel Wood has a rating of 132 so you have to subtract from the top weight of 133 which is 1 pound.
Rating Squirrel Wood you have to subract the 1 pound from the master rating of 20 = 19 then add the odds of 4/1 = 23Courageous (IRE) 132 9-6 /14/1/ 18/ 32
As Courageous has the same weight as Sqirrel Wood who’s weight rating was 19 prior to adding the odds, we now have to subtract 1 pound (the incremental rule) and we end up with a rating of 18 + 14/1 = 32
Do More Business (IRE) 129 9-3 / 4/1/ 16/ 20
As Do More Business is weighted on his own at 129 we subtract that weight from the top weight of 133 = 4 pounds, we then subtract the 4 pounds from the master rating of 20 = 16 + 4/1 = 20
Ridgeway Sapphire 124 8-12 / 7/2/ 11/ 14.5
Ridgeway Sapphire and Lady Valtas have the same weight of 124 so the incremental rule will apply again.
For Ridgeway Sapphire subtract 124 from the top weight of 133 = 9 pounds, then subtract 9 pounds from the master
rating of 20 = 11 + 7/2 = 14.5
Lady Valtas 124 8-12 / 50/1/ 10/ 60
As Lady Valtas has the same weight as Ridgeway Pearl we have to use the incremental rule.
Ridgeway Pearl weight rating was worked out at 11, we subtract 1 pound = 10 + 50/1 = 60Otto The First 122 8-10/ 12/1/ 9/ 21
Otto The First carried a weight of 122 so we have to subtract from the top weight of 133 = 11 pounds, We then subtract the 11 pounds from the master rating of 20 = 9 + 12/1 = 21.
Copper Rag 118 8-6/ 25/1/ 5/ 30
Copper Rag carried a weigth of 118 so we subtract from the top weight of 133 = 15 pounds, we then subtract the 15 pounds from the master ratins of 20 = 5 + 25/1 = 30
Just Isla 117 8-5/ 7/2/ 4/ 7.5
Just Isla carried a weight of 117, subtract from the top weight of 133 = 16 pounds,
subtract 16 pounds from the master rating of 20 = 4 + 7/2 = 7.5In conclusion, as Just Isla had clearly the lowest rating of 7.5, this had to be the selection (Won 3/1)
.If I handicapped a race and the bottom 3 had ratings of 14.0, 15.0 and 16.0, I would then refer to my speed figures and look at the last 3 speed ratings for each horse, and the horse with highest speed figure becomes the selection

I wait until about 11.00am and using my Excel scraper, I collect the up-to-date race cards and odds from the Sporting Life website, it only takes a few minutes to rate any race with practise
