Even just reading the name Sergeant Cecil, just brought a beaming smile wide across my face.
I live for the moment though… Londinium will be my all time favourite handicapper, if Fanning sneaks him home in front today… Until tomorrow… Tomorrow is always another day.
I would agree with Sergeant Cecil although it brings back memories of one of the worst moments in TV racing coverage.
As soon as Cecil passed the line at Newmarket to complete one of the greatest feats in handicap history Alastair Down announced that due to the race overrunning(Who would have thought that a 35 runner race could start late?) Channel 4’s coverage had to end. So no reaction to a historic moment.
August 3, 2017 at 08:58 #1312595Anything trained by the late George Todd. Even when they didn’t win frequently, you knew as soon as the money went on, they were home and dried. Mind yhou, there were a number of trainers back in those days whose money you could follow, especially around Epsom.
August 3, 2017 at 18:27 #1312669Ryan Price was another one. Fearsome man
August 3, 2017 at 20:41 #1312684Morgan’s Choice especially with Willie Carson up was a particular favourite.
August 3, 2017 at 22:52 #1312699There can be only one, can’t there?
Red Rum.
Value Is EverythingAugust 3, 2017 at 22:56 #1312700I would say an admirable animal called SAMLEE. He used to be owned by a partnership that included a friend of mine I used to work with and had the distinction of being placed in three Nationals. THE National and the Welsh and Scottish versions too!!
He won about 150 grand in his career and sadly went out on his shield, I will always remember this fella

And on the flat I would say HALLING who won his first handicap off something like 75 and a Cambridgeshire of 93 !! What a cert he was that day!!
And proceeded to be a top class group one performer
August 3, 2017 at 23:45 #1312703Didn’t the syndicate come all belong to a pub? I seem to remember being pretty cut up about his demise.
August 7, 2017 at 14:59 #1313184Yeah Moe, he was owned by The White Lion Partnership.
I was at Ayr the day we lost him, was a very sad day

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 7, 2017 at 15:01 #1313187Great shout Homer, wouldn’t mind him myself. I’d love to see him in the list of entries for The Cesarewitch.

You are right chaps. The White Lion at Bulkington was the pub!! And I worked for Barclays bank with a syndicate member and it was sooooooo sad at Ayr that day to see him pass.
August 9, 2017 at 22:44 #1313390<p abp=”205″>Ryan Price was another one. Fearsome man
II was at a Windsor evening meeting and met a guy who seemed to go racing every day and certainly knew his stuff. He pointed out someone lurking by a pillar and said, “Watch the bookies when he moves”. When he did move towards the bookies the rubbers were out deleting the price on one of Ryan’s horses, he was one of Prices betting agents.
Talking of Ryan Price, I can remember John Jenkins as a jockey, first of all as an apprentice flat jockey, then as a jumps jockey. He often rode for a Ed Beeson who I think had been a top man in the Ryan Price stable. Do you remember him, he seemed to know how to get a horse ready.
August 9, 2017 at 22:58 #1313391One of my all time favourite handicappers was Earth Summit. The only horse to win the Scottish, Welsh and Aintree Nationals.
August 10, 2017 at 01:58 #1313394If I were to chose a horse running now that has achieved so much already at 8 years,
and has the promise to go on and be a star, it would be Lucinda Russell’s ONE FOR ARTHUR.
He’s improving at some rate, and has rightly been raised 27lbs in the last year. He will
no doubt be aimed at the National again, and if he had carried the 8lb rise he got for
winning that, I think he would have still won. I love marathon chasers, and he’s as good
as any on the go at the moment, and maybe for some time. I don’t want to tempt fate, but
could he be the new Red Rum
If I were to have a stab at one on the flat, and as I see we are also picking some that
have been and gone, I’d love to have owned LOCHSONG. I love the big gambling handicap sprints,
and he was incredible to watch in those. He won the way I like to see, brave as a lion, making
all and mostly leaving everything in his wake. He won the Stewards Cup, the Portland and the
cherry on the top for me was the Ayr Gold Cup. Add to that that he won the Prix de L’Abbaye
TWICE !!. He would have been a dream horse to own. - AuthorPosts
