During Goodwood today, we were admiring the marvellous Pettochside. Trained by John Bridger (something of a dab hand with these ageless cult hero types – Megalala, Shifting Star etc), he is remarkably consistent for an above average sprint handicapper.
54 starts, 9 wins, 10 2nds, 8 3rds and numerous other money finishes besides. £65,000 in total earnings, hasn’t missed any chunk of time through injury since starting out in 2011, hasn’t run a bad race since 2014 and is running well from his highest ever rating at the age of 8.
Who wouldn’t want to own a horse like that?
Which admirable handicappers would you like take home?

Doesn’t your example highlight one of the worst things about the game. You describe Pettochside – “admirable, marvellous, consistent, above average, running off his highest ever rating”
He has won 9 races and been placed double that yet has only “amassed” 65 grand in his career.
He’s nowhere near even covered his costs
You ask the question who wouldn’t want to own a horse like that? Well if you don’t mind haemorraging money I suspect most of us.
Incidentally I don’t know whether you know young fella but Pettochside is owned by former top jockey Paul Cook, by the lack of mentions he gets when the horse runs I would think 90% of presenters and pundits are unaware and probaly half of them don’t know who Paul Cook is anyway

Regards your question, does it have to be a present handicapper or can it be from the past?
I’m going for one from the past Sergeant Cecil – Pitman’s Derby, Ebor & Ces all in the same season, it was unbelievable.
He even went onto G2 and G1 triumphs afterwards and amassed over 800 grand, so just about managed to cover his costs.Incidentally young fella a bit of useless info for you, Pettochside’s owner used to ride Sergeant Cecil’s dams sire, Touching Wood when he won the English & Irish St Legers and even the Welsh Derby in 1982.
August 2, 2017 at 11:16 #1312419ROY’S LEGACY
Regularly gives it the works at his level for 18 wins, 16 seconds, 21 thirds from 122 runs to date. Robust street fighter of a sprinter who has done the Shaun Harris stable proud.
Still an entire and, if I were a breeder, I would be more inclined to breed from a robust, tough sort like Roy’s Legacy than some ‘star horse’ retired at 3 years old after half a dozen runs.
And the message to Yeats is, Yes, he would cost money on a regular basis, but his owners haven’t ‘alf had a lot of fun with him in recent times.
August 2, 2017 at 11:21 #1312422Caspian Prince would’ve been fun to own. You know he would run a big race over 5f off any weight on any ground with good or firm in it.

The single most incredible flat racing feat of all for my money.

August 2, 2017 at 12:04 #1312432Totally agree Yeats, made this point myself yesterday. You can’t ask for much more than Pettochside if you’re a small-time owner but even he doesn’t cover his costs.
Great shout with Sergeant Cecil. Here’s hoping Duke Of Bronte can hit similar heights for the Millman mob.
August 2, 2017 at 13:16 #1312454Even just reading the name Sergeant Cecil, just brought a beaming smile wide across my face.
I live for the moment though… Londinium will be my all time favourite handicapper, if Fanning sneaks him home in front today… Until tomorrow… Tomorrow is always another day.
August 2, 2017 at 13:24 #1312455But are we talking out and out handicappers or handicappers who have made into Group horses such as Sergeant Cecil. Probably my fave flat horse Borderlescott started in handicaps eventually going on to win Group 1s and then returning to handicaps as age caught up.
Bronze Angel must be one who has earned his (and my) keep.
As for a dual purpose horse I’d absolutely love to own Sternrubin. An out and out battler

For now… Londinium is my all time favourite handicapper.

No wonder LostSoldier3 keeps rejecting your bets when phoned through to Coral Towers Nausered
August 2, 2017 at 15:01 #1312484I’d take one that is now retired – Hello Bud.
Herefordshire National, Southern National, Somerset National, Scottish National and the Becher Chase twice. Add to that a 5th and 7th placed finishes in the Grand National.
A wonderful horse who I think anyone who loves racing would have wanted to own.
