I was thinking about this last night in lieu of some bookies paying first past the post.
Who were the last horses to have passed the post first in a Group 1 only to be subsequently thrown out in UK and/or Ireland. I can’t remember any but either my mind is a blank or it’s at least 10 years.
July 25, 2008 at 09:32 #174689The only one that springs to mind since the start of the decade is Noverre, but as that was in the French Guineas it doesn’t really answer your question!
July 25, 2008 at 10:08 #174698I could only think of Sagace off the top of my head, and that’s even further back!

July 25, 2008 at 10:11 #174700I remember the 1981 Irish 2000 Guineas. Kings Lake, O’Brien/Eddery was first past the post beating To-Agori-Mou, Harwood/Starkey. The placings were reversed on the day but on appeal a few weeks later Kings Lake was reinstated as the winner.
To-Agori-Mou did not have to wait long for revenge.
"To-Agori-Mou getting revenge on Kings Lake in the 1981 St James’s Palace Stakes. That was a very happy moment." Harwood didn’t go into detail about that last victory, which was famous – or notorious – for Greville Starkey proffering a V-sign in the direction of rival Pat Eddery, on runner-up Kings Lake, as they passed the post. The previous month, in controversial circumstances, Eddery and Kings Lake had taken the Irish 2,000 Guineas after bumping To-Agori-Mou, who had finished second."
July 25, 2008 at 10:16 #174702Rock Roi ‘won’ the Ascot Gold Cup twice, but was disqualified on both occasions, in 1971 for failing a dope test and 1972 for interference.

July 25, 2008 at 10:19 #174704There’s Three Valleys, who won the Middle Park and was subsequently chucked out, but that wasn’t until months later (banned substance).
Storming Home got binned from the Arlington Million for interference, but being US I don’t think that helps either!
July 25, 2008 at 11:06 #174715I know the opening post said UK and Ireland, but Price Tag in the french 1000G in the latest one i can think of. It was harsh too.
July 25, 2008 at 11:34 #174725Wasn’t Nureyev disqualified after winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket one year ?
I forget which year it was now – may have been late 1980’s.- 1986 ?
I also well remember Rock Roi being disqualified two years in a row after passing the post first in the Ascot Gold Cup.

You’re older than you think ~ 1980
July 25, 2008 at 11:46 #174729Mentioning Arlington, Powerscourt was disqualifed after winning the 2004 Arlington Million but got his revenge by winning the 2005 renewal.

I think you must be right there Rory !!!
The years seem to pass so quickly now and the old brain cells are dying off at a faster rate than ever. I do find it increasingly difficult to remember exact years in which events happened such as the Nureyev disqualification – it all just seems to fade into one big blur !

Now where is that hospital appointment card…………….
July 25, 2008 at 11:53 #174735Nureyev was disqualified in the 1980 2000 guineas and sadly never raced again after contracting a virus, Aliysa was disqualified in the 1989 Oaks.
July 25, 2008 at 11:54 #174736Incidentally, Nureyev was very closely related to another disqualified G1 winner in Marinsky. Marinsky won the July Cup in 1977 but was disqualified for bumping Gentilhombre (for "bumping", read "trying to kill" ); Marinsky had to race in a muzzle after savaging another runner in the Diomed Stakes earlier in the season and his behaviour was so bad that the Stewards banned him from competing in Britain again. I believe he was also barred from breeding and died of a twisted gut later that year (an insurance scam according to the cynical uncle who told me the story).
July 25, 2008 at 11:55 #174737…………….but that was drug-related, allegedly…….and that doesn’t count.

I don’t think you need the word allegedly there Colin!

I remember that incident in the Diomed Stakes.
I am fairly sure that the horse he tried to savage was Lady Beaverbrook’s Relkino, who was a very good horse in his own right (may even have been a Group race winner).
