Obviously the changes (well discussed already) have an impact on what you’re looking for, but first glance at the market, and I thought the 25’s for Corbetts Cross is huge. He’s obviously a contender for The Gold Cup, along with Inothewayurthinkin, but with JP having so many contenders just now, I just think Corbetts is one who could head here
Intense Raffles looks a cert to progress next season, but behind him in third at Fairyhouse, was Minella Cocooner, and at 66’s, he’s the one I’m swaying towards backing early. Would’ve been a lot closer if not for belting the last, and I think the 66’s looks big. Trying to hold off and see if he’s Sandown bound, but I’m very interested
Of those who made the frame yesterday, Galvin and Kitty’s Light make plenty of appeal again, and I’ll almost certainly bet Galvin at some point
Last but not least is Jungle Boogie. Very fragile, but on a nice mark, and though I think he’ll win a decent pot before then, he’ll always be on my radar
Main hope Cocooner, but no bet yet
Corbetts Cross
Jungle Boogie
Minella CocoonerApril 15, 2024 at 01:48 #1690592Corbetts cross and inothewayurthinkin would be the two that immediately came to mind when I saw this thread
Minella cocooner definitely has a big race in him. Was surprised he ran so well in the Irish national on that ground.
I’m convinced he’s a good bit better on better ground.
The weather this national hunt season has meant he’s not had the chance to run with gd in the going description.
April 15, 2024 at 09:59 #1690602Kitty’s Light ran a fabulous race and is well worth another go if he gets more favourable conditions. What a travesty it would have been had he not got in.
I can’t see Corbetts Cross being aimed at anything else next season than this. Expect some skulduggery between October and February.
Chianti Classico looked every bit a National horse at Cheltenham and didn’t disgrace himself at Aintree. Looks well suited to this.
Gentlemansgame surely gets aimed at this next season and looks a likely type.
They’d be my very early four.
April 15, 2024 at 11:03 #1690605My initial thought was something like Iroko maybe. You could see them going for the Hennessy and working from there. Always been well regarded, did really well in his graded races this spring considering his season got curtailed. I’d be a bit concerned Corbetts Cross might have smashed his handicap mark to pieces running so well in a Grade 1 race as a novice, he could be reassessed in the mid 160s after that. I think on that note too, JP had the three of them for the novice 3m ish chase at Aintree and he sent Corbetts up to tackle the big boys in open company instead. I think that tells you he’s not a handicapper for them.
April 15, 2024 at 14:11 #1690629For next year’s race. Not that I like to bet that far ahead, any Trevor Hemming horses are worth considering. Even though he passed away in Oct 2021 I feel that they want to honour his memory by running what they can. Willidoit is still a natural in my opinion, but feel they don’t want to risk him. Also keen on Desertmoore House.
The best things in life are free.
But you can give them to the birds and bees.April 15, 2024 at 14:21 #1690630Can’t argue against VTC’s trio, but I hope that connections of Malina Girl target the race properly next year.
April 15, 2024 at 17:53 #1690645How wasn’t Malina Girl targeted at the race this year, Glad’?
Value Is EverythingApril 15, 2024 at 18:06 #1690647I don’t think this year’s renewal was typical. Run too slow and so favouring speedier types. The three for me are:
Kitty’s Light – Ran by far the best of the true stayers in a slowly run race… And goes well on proper Spring ground. Although the Bet365 might ruin his handicap mark.
Galia Des Lteaux – Jumped well (made ground at his fences), just didn’t run to form (might get her mark dropped). May do better next year in a truly run race. Although may need a softish surface.
Desertmore House – Crying out for an extreme test so can improve. And goes well on Spring ground.
Value Is EverythingApril 15, 2024 at 20:20 #1690660I quite like the idea of American Mike going for this. Can’t see him priced up anywhere though. Ahoy Senor is another I’d give a chance to and the 50s is tempting.
April 16, 2024 at 00:13 #1690693They’d be taking a massive risk if running Ahoy Senor… But I think I remember saying that about some other runner this year and where did he come?
Value Is EverythingApril 16, 2024 at 11:53 #1690718I’d love to see Gerri Colombe in this.
Might take a chance on the current 40s.
April 16, 2024 at 14:46 #1690738167 was the performance figure given for Corbetts Cross by the way from Aintree. That is going to take some serious skulduggery by Emmet to get him competitive for this. I can’t see Gerri coming to this, will get at least another season or two in good company before they stick him in Cross Country’s and then here when he can’t be competitive in Grade 1s which is Gordon’s MO now.
I’m not sure I’d be taking anything out of this years renewal because the favourite won very easily and most of those following him home aren’t going to be any better handicapped and will be a year older next year, most of them heading in the wrong direction. I Am Maximus basically had 10lbs in hand off his mark, that’s what he’s been reassessed as. It was 12lbs for Corach Rambler. I think you need something on the up not the down nowadays because unless you get something that has dropped to being a stone well in and in which case they are at risk of not getting in, its hard to have enough in hand of these improvers.
April 16, 2024 at 15:52 #1690749Intense Raffles is the only shout so far, 25s ew 5 places
April 16, 2024 at 15:53 #1690750“I’d love to see Gerri Colombe in this.

April 23, 2024 at 00:54 #1691510Not sure what I was thinking, leaving the 66’s for Minella Cocooner, but it’s gone now anyway. I think he’s got a big shout Saturday, if he’s allowed to take his chance, and if he’s declared I’ll take the 40’s for Aintree.
Ontheropes is harder to make a case for, but I’m going to get him added anyway if I can. If they’re persevering with him, then so will I. He never really got involved Saturday, but equally, he wasn’t really asked to either. I just liked the way he was getting there at the end. Just too late. That was another step up from Naas, and he’s coming along (very) slowly. He’ll be an 11yo next year, but there’s not many miles on the clock. I just think he’s got a big one in him before then, and that should be enough to get him in the 34. Not the most obvious granted, and I get that he’s easy to pick holes in, but he’s in top hands, and I think they can get him back
**Took the 40’s**
Corbetts Cross
Jungle Boogie
Minella Cocooner 40’s
OntheropesApril 27, 2024 at 22:06 #1692085Added Minella Cocooner 25s ew 5 places for now.
April 28, 2024 at 12:02 #1692126Just the one bet for me so far, Minella Cocooner 25/1 on the nose.
