Thank goodness I did not have a bet on the race. Full marks to Marquand but punters are entitled to feel aggrieved with Messrs Murphy, Dettori and a few others.

August 1, 2023 at 16:49 #1657669If the jockey leading the pack won’t go, nobody else will break ranks either. Once the hare is far enough ahead that the others can’t slipstream, everyone is even more reluctant to chase, especially into the wind, and especially if the hare isn’t in the top few in the betting- the other jockeys are all too busy looking at the horses they perceive as their main threats.
Well done Tom and Quickthorn.August 1, 2023 at 16:49 #1657671The fav, didn’t look like the ground was to his liking so wouldn’t have been able to reel Quickthorn in anyway.
A few of the others may wonder if they should’ve been closer early.August 1, 2023 at 16:49 #1657672Throughout he was getting further and further ahead and two out you could see the others just rowing away. Great race, horse and jockey.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 1, 2023 at 16:52 #1657673All the other jockeys have come out and said that AP Racing said in the circumstances it’s best to be on a hold up horse.

August 1, 2023 at 16:53 #1657674Well done Ben and Tom.
When there’s a race where there aren’t many stamina horses at the trip who race prominently – that can happen.Value Is EverythingAugust 1, 2023 at 17:01 #1657675The ‘deity’ that is Mr Dettori did not seem to be busting a gut for second place…
Well done Ben Bernanke who, while not making it an outright selection, at least hinted strongly at Quickthorn’s chances.

Would they though?
Had they chased that early pace they’d have been falling out the back of the tele at the end of the race
Quickthorn has shown before he is capable of these freakish runs
Worth remembering he did exactly the same thing at York last season and beat Coltrane by 14 lengths
Just have to say fair enough I reckon
Don’t think anything was beating him today not even kyprios
August 1, 2023 at 17:07 #1657680Elite sport is a game of fine margins, but that wasn’t a particularly fine margin.
It wasn’t a 100/1 rag, it was a decent stayer on his day that had done the exactly same thing in the Lonsdale last year.
You simply don’t let a horse like that get – what? – 20-25 lengths clear.
Should never have been more than ten.
Would they have burst themselves had they set a tempo to lie up closer?
Was the winner the best on the day anyway?
It’s possible – when he’s good, Quickthorn looks very good indeed – but they never gave themselves the chance to find out.

Sorry, I can’t have that. It is in effect saying if Quickthorn sets off at a strong pace then everything else can only finish second at best. I cannot believe nothing could have sat closer to him.
Murphy was still barely moving on Coltrane well inside the home straight. Did he really think the leader was going to come back?
August 1, 2023 at 18:09 #1657700I can’t have that either – I agree with CAS on this one.

Nothing of the sort
Had that happened the horses that did the chasing would finish out the back of the tele
But the race would’ve been won by something held up drafting in behind the chasers
Murphy knew trying to chase quickthorn early would gas Coltrane out
His only hope was that quickthorn would stop or that someone else would do the chasing for him
August 1, 2023 at 19:15 #1657719Always respect your views, FF (in fact it’s rare for me to disagree with you) and I’m not saying you’re wrong because it’s a game of opinions.
But while I agree Quickthorn is a right good stayer on his day (as he showed at York) the rest of the field simply don’t need to give him that much leeway.
He might have won anyway, I don’t think Courage Mon Ami liked the ground as it turned out, but I think Ryan Moore (rare for him as he’s riding out of his skin and is back to being World No 1 for me) and Oisin Murphy have simply given their mounts too much to do.
Fascinating contest, though, and it’s created an ongoing talking point.

To see whether he actually went as fast as it looked
If he didn’t go off really fast then the jockeys leading the pack have messed up
August 2, 2023 at 07:37 #1657790From “Thoroughbred Daily News”:
“Quickthorn’s final three-furlong percentage was an almost bang-on 101.45%, while Emily Dickinson was at 108.63%, so that means that the leader was ridden ideally and the filly was given too much to do along with the next four home who finished in a tight bunch. Perhaps the main reason why such class horses got so far adrift was the relatively slow pace set by Oisin Murphy as he lead the peloton, determined not to provide Frankie with a target as he had at Royal Ascot. The others trusted Murphy’s judgement and ultimately paid for it.”
August 2, 2023 at 08:08 #1657794Riders on horses who stay 2m4f drop to 2m and give 25 lengths head start to a proven front-running winner at 1m6f and 2m.
Were they nursing their mounts to get a trip they were already proven at half a mile further than?
Did they think they were following an OR 80-rated sprint handicapper who had bolted?
I can forgive Oisin Murphy because I’ve long since come to the conclusion that, in terms of judgement, he’s daft as a brush – it’s all natural ability with him – but Ryan Moore has a brain so he’s the one needing the biggest look in the mirror after that debacle.
