Sea Of Heartbreak amiss, Sour Mash pulled too hard, Contract 3rd, Berling dog. What made it worse was I took a little bit of 66/1 Mataaleb too, 2nd.Then Mortitia won, who I’d made a note of running with promise before Meehan returned to form. Unbacked.

-28 Layline

Although the main two were well backed, wished I was not on. Layline in particular looked dodgy in the paddock, sweating up and restless, temperamental? Wrong bets, poorly worked out.Days Deficit -144.7 points

-20 Tropical Treat
-22 Astrophysical Jet3rd
-8 Starfish Bay
-7 Group Therapy2nd
-9 Triple Aspect UR
-66 points
Thought the old boy Borderlescott was on the downgrade, but market confidence said otherwise. It’s possible there was a golden highway developing on the third quarter of the track. Most winners coming from that section. Both Group Therapy and Astrophysical “poorly drawn”? American Starfish Bay is usually a front runner and slowly away (no bell). Tropical Treat well backed found her way blocked, couldn’t recover. Triple Aspect had every chance when saddle slipped and unseated rider in final furlong.3:25 Goodwood

Tactic looked the worst in the paddock, not surprised he drifted, went lame in race. Age Of Aquarius backed at 6/4 shortened to 4/6 (20% difference) before suffering bad injury in the race. Illustrious Blue well backed, got me out of trouble.4:00 Goodwood

Everything but the winner. Got the short priced favourite beaten, and a 16/1 outsider wins. What makes it worse is Eastern Aria drifted to a price my 100% book tells me it’s value, yet did not back it.4:35 Goodwood

Fahy had brought a big team down for Goodwood and most, if not all ran poorly. Not taking enough notice of trainers in form.5:15 Goodwood
-25 Golden Stream2nd
-18 Puff
-3 Strictly Dancing
-46 points
Golden Stream 6/1 to 9/2 and Puff 7/1 to 4/1 well backed. Former losing out by under a length. Winner Tropical Paradise might not have acted on the ground had they not watered. However, was another in my 100% book at one stage a backable price that went unbacked.Did have Sea Lord (not on the thread) but little more than a saver.

Went in again on the two horses when Sea Lord came out, but did not have time to put it up. Ironic after such a bad week, get a winner when the second would’ve paid just as well. Even allowing for the non-runner both came in for good support; starting at 7/2 and 3/1.3:05 Goodwood
-17 Strawberrydaqueri
-20 Stacelita2nd
-37 points
Another near(ish) miss second. Though Midday idled and a very worthy winner. Stacelita drifted from my early price, where as Strawberry shortened. Both first two gone on to win other Group 1’s since, third here Antara following Stacelita home in France.3:40 Goodwood

What made it worse was another saver on thesecond
Jonny Mudball. Far too many bets on those only marginal value. Main two bets well backed.
4:15 Goodwood
-38 Captain Bertie2nd
-38 points
Captain beaten in a photo, came in from 11/4 to 2/1, stood out in condition in the paddock. Where as winner Pausanias as low as Evens in the morning, out to 3/1; although a grand stamp of animal looked burly and must be a fine prospect to defy fitness.Days Deficit -61.75
Goodwood Festival Deficit 491.25 points
One of the worst weeks betting in my life!
It’s easy to think with all those seconds I was just “unlucky”, probably partly true. But there’s more to it than that.
Being too tired to study so many races. Studying, travelling 50 miles to Goodwood, getting through the crowds, getting back, studying……. Takes it out of you, especially with diabetes. Decided I must make an effort to get fitter if I’m to do five days next year. Trying to study when eyes are closing, you’re bound to make mistakes. Cutting corners is not the way to go.
Much better to concentrate on big value and leave the marginal stuff alone.
Not putting enough emphasis on trainers in form. Only backed one Hannon winner, and that just a saver. Made too many out of form (at Goodwood) trainers the main bet.
Made some poorly drawn horses main bets instead of savers and well drawn ones savers and not main bets.Up to date results to come.
It does get better.

Concerned when Kansai Spirit failed to race prominently, but Buick knew what he was doing. Mountain Hiker was fairly well behaved in the paddock this time, but again rejected the stalls. May be wants a racecourse where going in to stalls is on the way back to stables.3:45 Newbury

Rewilding backed in to 6/4 impressive, no doubt helped by what seemed an overly strong pace. He’s also a light-framed horse who may not take quick races that well. Midas Touch up with the pace, doing better than distances suggest. Hence an ante-post bet.3:25 York

Official going made me think it would be too firm for winner Opinion Poll. Though in the end went out to a backable price (not that I did). Samuel ran well, but a high head carriage suggests a little temperament and might not be the easiest to win with. All three horses well backed, 3/1 from 9/2, 11/2 from 8/1 and 9/2 from 6/1.2:50 York
-20 Crown Prosecutor2nd

Good job no Rule 4 with Sariska failing to start. Snow fairy beaten by a better filly. Personally can’t see her staying the St Leger trip. At one point Midday went out to a backable price. Had I not done Snow Fairy each way would’ve at least put a saver on.Days Profit 75.38 points
