Hang on a minute – if the stewards are having a look what exactly are they going to do?
For a start it will not effect the result however they are entitled to see if any riding offences have been occurred.
It is interesting the Stewards never seem to be able to win – if they don’t announce an enquiry they are accused of not being open, if they do then people question why they are doing so.
June 6, 2008 at 15:27 #166850If Getaway had been hemmed in by a different Coolmore horse then questions would have to be asked. But for Murtagh to do so on SoF is perfectly acceptable IMO. The pacemakers didn’t hamper Getaway so I don’t see what the problem is.
June 6, 2008 at 15:29 #166852Maybe Frankie boy demanded again they check that team Coolmore hockeyed him!
June 6, 2008 at 15:31 #166855What does anyone expect Murtagh to do just take a pull and allow Getaway through? Getaway was infront of Soldier Of Fortune had he had the pace he wouldn’t have got hemmed in.
June 6, 2008 at 15:31 #166856Salselon, surely you need 2 horses to hem another horse in though.
In one sense, yes, but it’s Pasquier’s fault he was directly behind MacArthur, and I don’t think Heffernan could have been deemed to have had eyes in the back of his head with the intention of stopping Getaway.
I think Ballydoyle were guilty last year of team tactics but not today.
I (clearly!) was on Youmzain, but can see Getaway isn’t the horse many thought.
June 6, 2008 at 16:13 #166883I have the result of the Stewards.
Soldier Of Fortune interfered with Mcarthur in the final furlong.
Careless riding – 3 day holiday for Murtagh
In the earlier race Frankie picked up four days for his ride on Emirates Skyline – 3 days for barging out and interfering with Mr Aviator and a further day for a second offence in the final furlong.
June 6, 2008 at 16:24 #166886Only just seen the race, a very clever ride from Murtagh.
I dont think Pasquier can say too much, he was ahead of Soldier of Fortune for a long time, and an experienced jockey like that would have been able to see Macarthur ahead of him as well as the other horse that went blazing off infront.
He had ample time to position his horse so he didnt get hemmed in against the rail, in my opinion. He didnt, Murtagh saw an opportunity, and exploited that opportunity.
Great tactical ride from Murtagh.

Now I am talking through my pocket – and I realise that it is never sensible to do so – but if you watch the race again, see where Richard Hughes has the runner up 2 furlongs out….
He doesn’t even get pushed along when it was clear the others had shot clear. It was like he was riding a ‘waiting’ race and was confident he was going to pick up the leaders – which to the horses credit – he almost did.
Now I know the horse is the proverbial bridesmaid but given a shove along a little earlier – honestly think he would have won.
Of course I could be wrong and you argued it ‘stayed on into second’ – but to me it didn’t – it was given the push until far too late which to me, when this happens, the blame lies with the jockey

Just actually watched it again (in French!) on Youtube.
Maybe he was pushing away earlier then I thought on him. Still think with a different jockey, having him closer to the action (like in the Arc) – I think he would have got up.
June 6, 2008 at 16:42 #166892While I can agree that Youmzain’s run was very good indeed, and that Getaway’s inexperienced-at-Epsom jockey may have helped to undo him, I think the two horses to take out of this race are the winner and Macarthur.
The Soldier doesn’t yet get quite the credit he deserves, and I think there are more G1s to be won by him. Macarthur may finally be beginning to show the talent the yard always believed him to possess. Will they keep them in separate races after today?
June 6, 2008 at 19:05 #166940Reading Paul Haigh’s blog – I don’t think I want to watch the Beeb’s coverage.

What is the address of that blog? I only know of The Guardian one, and that is rarely updated.
June 6, 2008 at 20:27 #166965How can people blind themselves to the fact that the best horse won the race – SOF and Youmzain had the best form in the race and they filled the places accordingly.
If Getaway hadn’t been boxed in he still wouldnt have won – imo of course.
He wasn’t travelling better than SOF – who will surely come on for the run.
As usual people overreact to an easy win – much better to trust form when top class horses finish closer together.
June 6, 2008 at 20:46 #166971it’s disappointing not to see a truly run race because of what is, in effect, team riding.
Hilarious. If the pack had followed Song of Hiawatha and Macarthur, you might have got your truly run race!
O’Brien said after the race:
It was a level pace, but it was not that strong because Frankie (Dettori, Red Rocks) pulled the field back off the pace a bit.
So Dettori, on a horse who’s biggest win by a mile came in a race where he raced well off a fast pace, decides to pull the field off the pacemaker? Mug.

Go to RP Derby site and Paul Haigh’s "blog" is linked at the top. It’s more of a in-running commentary of the day than a bolg though. Must admit I enjoyed it.

Pasquier rode a poor race, and probably wouldn’t have won anyway, but the Coolmore team tactics once again leave a sour taste.
It became obvious from the start that this was to descend into another chess match with the 3 pacemakers from the same stable, and Hefferman spending more time looking through his legs than forward, that the snare had been set, and they just had to wait for the rabbit to run into it.
The best horse won on the day, but with their firepower and multiple entries for the big prizes, it doesn’t augur well for that always being the case, particularly if that best horse isn’t owned by the Coolmore mafia.June 6, 2008 at 22:36 #167013Hefferman spending more time looking through his legs than forward
And producing a career best effort from his mount…

Yeah, my mistake GF.
