So what if he "got it wrong"?
Like to meet the person who never does…
He stuck his neck out and whilst i found the opinion a bit odd, he gave his reasons…thats fair enough
This isnt really a sport that lends itself to yaaboo type jibes
look forward to the article though :)
September 28, 2006 at 12:40 #78047Not seen the Mordin article but to admit you were wrong with grace and dignity reflects well on anyone.
And may I suggest Jackane that his words are a whole lot more edifying than your "I love George Washington" "told you so" post.
Win and lose with equanimity old chap.

On the contrary…controversy gets you places. Everybody is waiting on this article now

Not for the right reasons though.
The problem with Mordin is he made up his opinion on George Washington and then went about looking for stats, ratings etc to back it up when really he should be drawing his conclusions from what he has examined!!! So now that he admits George Washington is top class, is he going to review his opinion on the Guineas, resulting in a higher opinion of Sir Percy (who he has slated) whos form ties in with Dylan Thomas (who he also has slated)? And whatever happened to all these top class French staying colts he was talking up all year? The only reason he has backed down on GW is because he had to….his hand was forced.

DJ,
Reckon you will find plenty of hacks out there who wouldn’t know what a rating was if it leapt out wearing a giant sombrero with ‘RATING’ emblazoned on it.
On the other hand, I have a feeling that many racing hacks would feel particularly at home in Portsmouth.

September 28, 2006 at 14:15 #78053Btw
Is’nt saying GW was impressive there, Araafa gave a good performance there, Proclamation ran crap there actually rating horses?

‘I say forget the hype. This is a slow horse that should be opposed relentlessly from now on.’
I’m actually going to use that quote as my opening line in an article I’m writing on why ratings should be ignored.
Oh Irony!
September 28, 2006 at 22:27 #78055I have to ask a question – what is it with all the hostility towards me writing articles? I’m 18, not 48, and I really don’t care if a couple of forumites don’t want me to write one. I’m still LEARNING – why don’t some of you follow members like EC, Sal, Insomniac and Cormack in giving me advice and encouraging me?
I find it extremely pathetic that someone can simply reply ‘Oh dear….’ to me saying that I want to write another article.
Steve, funny you should mention that about being in profit if you laid GW. I also realised it earlier.
September 29, 2006 at 07:51 #78056*Deleted my own post as nick has just said below it will just go around in circles and not help*

September 29, 2006 at 08:12 #78057Now that EC and Stav are gone, it would be refreshing if we could return to debating on this forum without insulting people/winding them up.
Its a helluva a stance to dismiss ratings just like that and you invite dismissive answers by doing so
The problem you may have with your peices is that you are tending to see things a bit black and white (Coolmore brilliant – godolphin evil) and this being the racing world rather than Highbury, that doesnt really fit…
My advice would be (and yes i have written articles) is that you present a case giving space for the alternative view and then allow the reader to make his/her mind up. You also need to keep your own mind open whilst putting the facts togther because in this process you may find your opinion will change
September 29, 2006 at 09:39 #78059Clive,
If you hadn’t mentioned it before, it wouldn’t be hard to guess you were a Chelsea fan.
Just that you sort of fit that profile.
FYI, Highbury is no longer a football stadium
September 29, 2006 at 10:09 #78060It never was Salse…
It was a library

September 29, 2006 at 10:22 #78062I don’t see why people have such a problem with Jack’s idea for an article.
I can understand why they think it’ll be doomed to failure and the argument won’t be up to much.
(after all, if you believe in ratings, you’ve got to believe that any attempt to "disprove" their worthiness will fail)
However, let the lad have a crack at it before you judge.
Personally, I’m looking forward to reading it (with a mixture of fascination, amusement and horror). So, I’d be pretty bummed out if he was talked out of writing it!
Steve
