Has Sixties Icon got what it takes?
August 11, 2008 at 21:31 #176748If it were run at Goodwood probably but will it act on the likely soft ground? Two good priced horses against the field for me are Donegal and Templestern who will both love it soft and will stay and will I suspect be a decent price but I accept the chance of being shot down in flames.
August 12, 2008 at 09:40 #176775I really rate Donegal’s chance in this. Will relish the going and getting the WFA allowance.
August 12, 2008 at 11:36 #176780Sixties Icon has won on soft ground and no reason why Newbury won’t suit so I wouldn’t rule him out. An interesting runner is Mad Rush who the handicaper has pretty much forced to step up to listed/group races.
August 12, 2008 at 12:44 #176788Filthy seems to prefer the Ebor option for Mad Rush in today’s Post.

Point taken about SI and the ground from the "Brig". Of the two alternatives Donegal seems a nice fit.

He might well relish the going. Whether or not he’ll relish getting the WFA allowance is a more moot point but I think we can safely say he wouldn’t be running if he didn’t get it.
August 15, 2008 at 21:14 #177100Tricky race isn’t it?
Sixties Icon got a good ride from Murtagh at Goodwood last time out, but the conditions were very different. Any more rain would be a worry for me. I know the horse won a maiden at 3 on easier ground but all his form is on fast ground and I’d want him a bit longer before contemplating backing him.
Despite the proximity of Lion Sands to Sixties Icon last time I’m against Cumani’s horse because of the ground, the same goes for Geordieland.
Donegal’s win at Newmarket from Gravitatoion was boosted by that one winning at Goodwood next time out and Balding’s one ran an excellent race when just getting edged out by Conduit. If Donegal is around 11/2 or 6/1 I’ll back that one. If not I’d probably take two that are proven over this trip with give in the ground at Group/Listed level: Templestern and Peppertree Lane.
August 15, 2008 at 22:20 #177107Thank you to all that made the effort to provide some input to this and the other Big races forums. I just cannot understand why there are not more contributors. They obviously must know something we dont.
Disappointed.August 15, 2008 at 23:05 #177109Hi……..
Been looking at this race tonight and I fancy Peppertree Lane………provan group 3 performer on soft ground.
Be nice if more rain fell before the off………if we had a deluge old Balkan Knight would come into it…….
August 15, 2008 at 23:38 #177111Sixties Icon looks too short to me. Does have some form on a soft surface but there is a suspicion he’s best on a sound surface.
In my opinion Donegal should be favourite, improving and should do better at this trip. Proven on a soft surface too.
Peppertree Lane looks value at Ladbrokes 81. Would’ve fancied him even more had Templestern not be running. As without him could have dictated. There did seem an advantage today in racing prominently anyway.
Geordieland can’t be trusted.
Eastern Anthem could be interesting as he is lightly raced and should be suited by conditions.
If there is a downpour outsider Sell Out could improve (needs to). Has been crying out for this trip and her rounded action is at home on soft.Well it is an open race.

Value Is EverythingAugust 15, 2008 at 23:54 #177113On reflection, I think Sixties icon looks a standout bet @ 100/30. Famous last words.

Well done.
Hope you got on EW.

Had Templestern e/w but unfortunately only the win on Donegal. Still at least it shows maybe I know something about the game after all?
August 17, 2008 at 13:00 #177209Nice gutsy performance by Sixties Icon considering he was given a lot to do and looks in with a chance in the Irish Leger. Apparently they are considering a new Breeders Cup race over 12f for him.
Donegal ran a fair race but considering he got nearly a stone it doesn’t exactly get you too excited about Conduit for the Leger.
