Deliberate interference imo, throw him out.
Atzeni did the exact same thing last season in the Juddmonte International when Postponed cut up Mutakayyef.
Wall of Fire and Gordon are very unlucky there. I think she would have won.
August 19, 2017 at 14:47 #1314431This result won’t get reversed.
It never gets reversed, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be.
After my brush with the Newbury stewards I know they’ll never act.Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2017 at 14:57 #1314433Might not have won yet.
Oh yes he has!
Deliberate interference imo, throw him out.
What an unfair comment, but I let this talk for itself..
Andrea knew exactly what he was doing. Josephine could’ve ended up over the rail had she (the victim) not taken avoiding action. They should’ve had other jockeys in there to say whether she did give a shout out. Rules are there, just poor interpretation.
If you think my comments are pocket talk, Hein; if Defoe had been thrown out it would have cost me three figures on the race.
Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2017 at 14:57 #1314434What a lovely little horse Defoe is.
Whoever beats him in the St Leger will know he’s been in a race
August 19, 2017 at 14:58 #1314435Wall of fire only looked so good because the pace was slow. Defoe would be even better off a quicker pace which he’ll get at Donny.
August 19, 2017 at 15:01 #1314437Have to disagree Judge. Wall of Fire is a proper stayer and was inconvenienced by the pace if anything and had to be pushed along from a long way out and was even being niggled from the start.
Look at the horses form on galloping tracks compared to quick ones with tight bendsGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 19, 2017 at 15:05 #1314439Gordon and Palmer I can never get right. Bit like O’Brien.
August 19, 2017 at 15:26 #1314445You two must have been watching a different race to me. I thought the leaders went off too quickly given the headwind and ground. Favoured those held up.
Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2017 at 15:31 #1314449I’d have to see it again and check the fractions but didn’t think it was that strong at 1st sight

Average seconds per furlong slow for races at Newbury today using Racing Post Standard times:
10f Handicap: 6.29 secs slower than standard. ie 0.63 secs per furlong slower than standard.
7f 2yo Listed: 6.69 slow. 0.96 secs slow per furlong.
13.5f Geoffrey Freer: 5.4 slow. 0.4 secs slow per furlong.
7f Handicap: 5.96 slow. 0.85 secs slow per furlong.
7f Hungerford: 3.74 slow. 0.53 secs slow per furlong.
12f Maiden: 9.09 slow. 0.76 secs slow per furlong.
10f Handicap: 7.03 slow. 0.7 secs slow per furlong.
12f Handicap: 10.77 slow. 0.9 secs slow per furlong. You’d expect the better races to be run faster, but even so…
Suggests the Freer had the strongest pace.Value Is EverythingAugust 19, 2017 at 17:40 #1314482Thanks Ginge
To be fair I was watching Wall of Fire closely as opposed to how the race was developing. Makes more sense for it to have been run faster as Wall of Fire is a strong finisher off a good gallop rather than speed.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

I said your comment was unfair GT, and I stick to this!
Whatever you and others wish to have seen there, Defoe was clearly the best horse and he won deservedly. And the weight allowance was given here, it’s not his fault that he is 3 years old.

Whatever you and others wish to have seen there, Defoe was clearly the best horse and he won deservedly.Oh I agree Hein, Defoe did win “deservedly”; Andrea though imo did not. At the time of the interference he did not know he was going to definitely win. When jockeys make sure they’re going to win by allowing their mounts to go over and interfere… The jockey and therefore connections and horse should lose the race. British rules of racing cover this on deliberate interference, but the interpretation by stewards is weak and totally wrong. But I’ve had my own confrontation with the Newbury stewards and so I know they don’t follow the rules of racing anyway.

I agree Hein, it’s one of Nathan’s puzzling ideas.
Value Is EverythingAugust 20, 2017 at 01:38 #1314523Just caught up with the race and to be honest haven’t seen the head on but personally I didn’t think that Josephine Gordon gave Wall of Fire a very good race Nathan. She seemed intent on tracking Defoe at all costs and got herself into trouble doing so. She tracked him over to the rail in the early stages then she was behind him as he moved across to the stands side of the track and tried to pass him but got squeezed up for room then she went on the inside of Defoe with Wall Of Fire now under pressure and had to switch to make yet another challenge but it was all too late.
Wall Of Fire is a neat little horse and he’s going to win a Group race at some stage, I think if the jockey had not been so intent on tracking the favourite she could have had him in a better position and not wasted energy and disappointed him in not being able to make his run when he was fired up to do so.
Defoe was travelling well all the way it was almost a hands and heels win with Atzeni only giving him one reminder near the finish he was impressive.
My selection Frontiersman was really disappointing when looking like he had a good chance to assert and go on he fluffed his lines again but, like Wall Of Fire, I think there is a good race to be won with him before the end of the season…Jac

Has anyone got the head on because Sporting Life’s replay of the race didn’t show it and from side on it didn’t look so bad?
The Stewards acted at Newmarket today Ginge and threw out Mark Johnston’s winner Star Of The East in favour of Sheik Hamdam’s Okool for hanging left.
It’s the first in a long time and I’ve seen worse incidents let pass. But hey ho that’s racing
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 20, 2017 at 09:18 #1314542Thank you Jac, I think you assessed the race very truely and right.
As I said earlier, your contributions are always a great pleasure to read for me
.I don’t think there was any reason to interfere, and there was nothing Atzenis should be accused of from my sight.
That’s all I have to say here, I really enjoyed Defoe’s performance and also the ride I found decent and it hasn’t deserved to be nagged on.August 20, 2017 at 09:36 #1314547I must admit at the time I was surprised there was even a stewards enquiry. I had backed Defoe, (With a saver on crimean tartar, the less said about that the better) and when the race finished I took the dog for a walk. When I came back I turned on the tv only to find out that the horse had survived a stewards, I was shocked. Just as well I went out and didn’t have to endure that, I thought.
Watching the video now, the idea that Defoe could be thrown out seems preposterous. Defoe is clearly ahead of wall of fire when he goes for the rail. It’s perfectly legitimate race riding. In my opinion the jockey shouldn’t have even got a ban.
