    Companies have been in discussion with Whitehall for a while about this. It’s seen as an olive branch to ensure there isn’t a blanket ban and to hopefully avoid what has happened to the bans on advertising to the tobacco and alcohol industries.

    A shame horse racing is exempt though.

    As Matt points out, for it to be truly effective, it should also include shirt and league sponsorship and digital advertising around a pitch.

    If the whistle-to-whistle TV advertising ban is justified then the other things are as well.
