I agree the BHA should have made sure the case came to a private reading far more promptly. But whether the current situation is better than a more private hearing is imo extremely doubtful.
I don’t know if the PJA could’ve done anything else.

Great news
December 9, 2021 at 13:17 #1571466The whole thing has been such a bad look for racing it is important going forward that there is a proper code of conduct in place so we don’t have this happen again. The pja cannot be in charge of it as by definition they can’t back both sides in a disagreement. Hopefully some good will come of this case if only to get rid of outdated attitudes all throughout racing. It needs to happen to attract new people to the sport.
December 9, 2021 at 13:23 #1571467Suitable punishments anyone?
A ban?
Flogging?
Fry in the chair?
A two week holiday with tony McCoy?
December 9, 2021 at 13:25 #1571468Would anyone in Bryonys team have had a copy of the investigation to leak it to the press Ginger?
I would have thought it just as likely that someone within the BHA who was either frustrated with the length of time the case was taking or was worried that the BHA was trying to kill the story gave the report to David Walsh.
Who leaked the Allegra Stratton video to the papers, was it someone in the Labour Part or a person within the government?
December 9, 2021 at 13:27 #1571469As for dealing with the inquiry in private I am not aware that cases this serious would be tried in any way other than a public hearing.
Many incidents have been referred to Portman Square over the years.
December 9, 2021 at 13:28 #1571470First and foremost the right decision was reached – hopefully the punishment will be on the high end of the scale (if not the highest level) in order to send a clear message to those in the weighing room.
That being said, it is all very well having a code of conduct in place but it might take a generation of new jockeys and valets coming through before the weighing room culture changes to where a jockey (any jockey) will feel that they can without any form of recrimination speak out on behaviour that exceeds the acceptable – we know clearly from testimony that jockeys will not always be fully forthcoming with the truth to the authorities or even respond in the appropriate way when there is an issue to be dealt with, so likely things could get worse before they get better.
Hopefully I am wrong but history tells you that many years of ingrained behaviour can take even longer to rectify/change – however this could be the first painful step on that journey.
December 9, 2021 at 13:31 #1571471And Bryony was being ostracised by her colleagues in the weighing room long before the Sunday Times report. In fact it appears it started from the time of her initial complaint. So had there been a private hearing the public would not have found out how Bryony was being treated by the other jockeys simply for complaining about being subjected to sexual harassment and bullying.
December 9, 2021 at 13:33 #1571472Re punishments, I suspect for Dunne being forced to watch Frost’s post-race interviews non-stop would be the most suitable option.
December 9, 2021 at 13:35 #1571473“The whole thing has been such a bad look for racing”
Up to a point, but wherever you look within organisations there are aspects that make them look bad (eg No 10 at the moment).
What a proper hearing like this one does is (a) avoid the frequent criticism of behind-closed-doors affairs of being a cover-up and (b) provide an opportunity for improvement. Racing, and its public image, can only benefit if the relevant authorities use (b) purposefully.
From the reported evidence, the panel led by Mr Barker seem to have weighed it all up very carefully and reached the right conclusion. In particular, Mr Barker’s comments on the veracity of the two parties was clear and pulled no punches. Quite a number of other jockeys and trainers ought to reflect on their personal contributions/lack of contributions to the situation.
If the authorities do not respond purposefully, the sport risks the kind of thing facing football at the moment – a move to insert a government regulator in yet another area of life. And government, and regulators, have such a great track record, as we see almost daily with apologies for failures over Windrush, building regulations (Grenville Tower), and the Afghanistan withdrawal. It is not a matter of party politics. More that politicians, their teenage (in experience if not actually) “special advisors” and civil servants have little or no clue about running anything.
December 9, 2021 at 14:03 #1571474Alain Cawley attempting to defend Dunne on SSR just now….
“Robbie has been hard done by, I feel sorry for him”
It seems they can’t help themselves.
December 9, 2021 at 14:03 #1571475Alain Cawley “Robbie Dunne has been hard done by”. Is anything going to change in the weighing room?
December 9, 2021 at 14:21 #1571478It is so ingrained that it will take a long time for this outdated behaviour to change. They obviously exist in their own little bubble that they don’t think anything is wrong. Try working in the real world……and trying to get away with swearing, bullying, exposing yourself…..
December 9, 2021 at 14:41 #1571479“Try working in the real world……and trying to get away with swearing, bullying”.
Unfortunately I know people who have got away with it.
“Alain Cawley “Robbie Dunne has been hard done by”.”
He has obviously not been hard done by. He had a fair hearing, even after the leaked material to the press.
I can understand him being upset if he genuinely felt Frost’s riding caused his fall at Southwell. I can even understand a few raised voices in the heat of the moment. But if he had a problem with Frost’s riding, he should have raised it with the stewards. Not this old fashioned self policing weighing room attitude.
He comes across as a jealous little man who cannot handle a girl being more successful than him.

How about being forced to participate in ITV’s inevitable Frodon/Bryony love-in on Boxing Day?
