I notice Zarak isn’t in the Prix Ganay betting market on oddschecker

His trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre reports the race as a target

“Zarak was not right that day in Meydan. When I saddled him I saw that he was not in the same form he had been when he won his Group 3. It’s difficult to stay in Meydan for such a long time and train him from a distance. Zarak was just not the horse like we know him. He came back all right from Dubai and is now coming back to form. He will run in the Group 1 Prix Ganay and then we shall see.”

Cloth of Stars won the Prix Ganay
    he’s having a fine season
I forgot all about it, that the race was today….. :-(

I was in Glasgow last week and didn’t have the time to post.

It became clear that Fabre had gone back on his thinking that Cloth Of Stars was going to run at Newmarket in the Jockey Club and we were left with Cloth Of Stars and Zarak as joint favourites. Soon after that Minding parachuted into the betting as 5/4 Fav. Knowing O’Brien, I felt she would be vulnerable on seasonal debut and having been on Cloth Of Stars last time and against Zarak all of last season, I had to opt for Cloth Of Stars at 9/4.

Once Minding defected to an egg and spoon race instead, I was surprised to see the other two as joint favourites. Cloth Of Stars has that winning habit that Zarak lacks. The betting was one way for the Fabre colt and it proved to be accurate.

Cloth Of Stars is entered in the Coronation Cup and he is 10/1. Jack Hobbs is said to be going for the Hardwicke and US Army Ranger sits at half Cloth Of Stars odds at 5/1 in a place. Totally unappetising for an underachieving colt who was runner up in a crap Derby and who continues to get pumped at short odds in egg and spoon contests.

Put it in the diary Nathan ;-)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

There are a couple of trials this weekend. Both have 5 runner fields,

Sunday sees the Prix De Guiche, a 9F Group 3 won last year by Almanzor, probably the true horse of the year last season, having totally stuffed the winner of that contest, Minding, when they met. Anyway, this renewal sees the highly regarded Plumatic line up for Andre Fabre. I thought they might have run this colt in the Greffulhe the following day, so perhaps his outing at this shorter trip suggests he heads to the French Derby rather than Epsom. The race is at Chantilly and the off time is 4.10.

On Monday it is over to Saint-Cloud for the Greffulhe, a Group 2 race where Andre Fabre tends to send his best colts. Just five runners again and Waldgeist takes on Akihiro in a showdown that will tell us which one is Fabre’s best Epsom chance. It looks a straight shoot-out between the two on form thus far. Cloth Of Stars took this last year before being disappointing at Epsom. Fabre has won 7 of the last 11 renewals of the race and it will short odds that he sits 8/12 on Monday night. The race goes off at 1.35 and is a must watch with a view to the various Derbies.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well that’s Plumatic’s bubble burst already. He looked as slow as a boat today. He just never picked up and was thrashed out of sight by Phelps Win.

Dismal effort from a colt described as exciting by Andre Fabre. That notion looked utter tosh today.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Waldgeist and Akihiro were put well in their place by Recoletos at Saint-Cloud today.

Slowest away, the son of Whipper, was soon past Akihiro, who sat last thereafter. Wladgeist settled into a better position, sitting second, travelling well enough, most of the way until the 300 m mark, where the pace quickened noticeably.

Asked to go an win the race, Waldgeist did not find a lot, staying on at pretty much the same pace all the way to the line. Akihiro was asked to come from the back, but, again, the turn of foot was not there. He came past the beaten runners to have a personal battle for second with teammate Waldgeist, which the latter horse won very narrowly. The truth was that both horses were swamped by Recoletos, who had by far the best turn of foot. He readily past them to win by two and a half lengths.

Only 9th on his debut late last season, Recoletos had won both of his races this year, earning 86 and then 96 for his efforts. Trainer C. Laffon-Parias is not a name I see too often at the top table but today’s jockey Olivier Peslier certainly is and I would not under estimate today’s winner, as he is clearly improving rapidly.

I thought Recoletos looked as good as any in the paddock today. He has plenty scope to come on from this. I felt Waldgeist had not grown much over the Winter and Akihiro looks quite small. The Fabre runners were probably the smallest two colts in today’s field.

The race can be watched here:-

They seem to really kick on at the 300 metres marker and I was quite impressed by Recoletos in the way he picked up. I see no reason why he would not confirm the form.

The trainer mused that today’s prize money would probably be used to supplement Recoletos for the French Derby. The horse is in the betting now at 10/1 for that race and provided soft ground, as he had today, he must have a chance of outstaying French Guineas candidates Brametot and National Defense. Yucatan at 12/1 makes no appeal to me for that contest after a mediocre looking Derrinstown run.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Wow, i was very impressed with that. I was just going to have my bet on the French Derby tonight and that’s just put a big massive spanner in the works now.

Thanks for the replay anyway Steve

I was alarmed by the tweet from Simon Rowlands.

    https://twitter.com/RowleyfileRRR/status/861573226085978113

I think finishing speed is extremely strong and the race is not a real stamina test.

From France Galop’s website the time for the race is 2:13.97. After viewing the replay, I believe they covered first 1500m around 1:45 (105 seconds). Therefore Simon calculated a finishing speed around 120% in this race.

You may say the winner has a great turn of foot. But I wonder if he can repeat this under a stronger pace. The French Derby is more likely to have a bigger field and a stronger pace. It is a big question mark for me if the winner can repeat the same turn of foot in the big race.

Judged by pedigree, Akihiro and Waldgeist seem to be the ones to stay further. For me, Akihiro ran a better race as he turned into home straight in the last place and 1.5 lengths behind the winner. At the finish, he was beaten by about 2.5 lengths. He possibly had a good finishing speed.

Not sure how I did it, but I managed to take the same impression of a dawdle and a sprint, purely by eye. Not a stopwatch in sight. ;-)

Anyway, I would always prefer a horse with a turn of foot than one without.

In theory you can run the finish out of a horse by going faster but it is entirely impossible to custom fit a turn of foot into a horse who is one paced.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Whatever about Frankel discussions on other threads, Excelebration appears to have another top colt to go to war with, Ratiocination just won very impressively at Chantilly.

Sad to hear that Dabyah will miss the French 1000 Guineas. It arguably increases my statement that the owner should have run both at Newmarket.

I watched Ratiocination at Chantilly today and he fairly hosed in. It was men against boys really.

He is a well made colt, with plenty to like about him. I am hoping Pascal Bary keeps it up this weekend with Senga, who is favourite for the French 1000 Guineas.

The video for Ratiocination is here but will disappear in time. I’ll get a more permanent link later. You can wind the video on to 1m 50s to avoid the yap, Ratiocination sits second early with the big white blaze:-

    Steve Caution replied:-

I am registered on Ze Turf for live race watching but they tend to move their replays after a day or so.

I haven’t registered on them all but I tend to use Thoroughbred Daily News for permanent replays.

If people find one that’s best for them then it’s all good. :good:

I am lazy at heart and Thoroughbred Daily News does not require you to log in. Therefore, if I post the link here, readers don’t need to register to watch it. They can just click on the link.

I am a thoughtful chap, who has the reader’s best interest at heart. I like to make it convenient for the readers. God knows why, as I mainly get gyp and resentment in return ;-) LOL

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
