Could be…. Beaten by an above average handicapper….
February 3, 2018 at 15:49 #1340601Faugheen is a 10 year old now, that’s old – especially for a hurdler – he’s a veteran. Should go to Cheltenham for one last try – that 2nd is still pretty good form. But whether he’s “finished” or not, we should concentrate on celebrating his wonderful career. One of the best Champion Hurdlers of recent years.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 3, 2018 at 15:57 #1340606Matt Chapman looking sheepish as he flogged a dead horse . Faugheen’s goose has been cooked . We have seen the very best of him . The race was his for the taking today but he didn’t have enough speed left over the minimum trip to Get the better of an out and out stayer
The Champion Hurdle is now a foregone conclusion .
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
February 3, 2018 at 15:59 #1340607I’d go along with that Ginger. Still fancy him to win the champion hurdle on Morgiana form, but I just can’t see him getting back to that level in that time at his age.
Fingers crossed, would love him to do it one last time, even just to silence detractors, devastating horse at his best, could’ve been a 3 time champion hurdle winner, or even a 3 time stayers hurdle winner for that matter.
February 3, 2018 at 16:14 #1340615There’s no way back to the horse he used to be. I’d estimate he ran to low 150s there. In hindsight, he probably did the same on his comeback this season with all three of those behind probably failing to run to their ratings.
He has always been a staying two-miler and has more convincing form over a trip than some, including The New One. Probably has just lost a lot of his speed. He has a Stayers entry so why not have a crack at that?
Best not to slag off old Supasundae too much though – he’s a very smart horse. His Supreme form with Altior and Buveur D’Air looks excellent in hindsight, he won a Coral Cup off a challenging mark and has run to 160 over a few different trips in the last 12 months.
February 3, 2018 at 16:40 #1340622Lol What kind of thread is this?
Supasundae an average handicapper?

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!February 3, 2018 at 17:02 #1340627He’s just come second in a grade 1. I thought it was an excellent performance behind a very good horse. Back to reality Ruby

I was talking about the MACHINE not the ALSO RAN Faugheen.
A Coral Cup winner of a mark of 148 is an above average handicapper. What’s so tough to understand?
I’m not disrespectful towards Faugheen, it’s just sad that this is his very best now…February 3, 2018 at 17:48 #1340637‘though We are not now that strength which in old days/Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;’ age and injury catch up with the best of us. A respectable effort, and still worth having a go at the CH, as apart from B d’Air, looks the weakest race for years. But still a bit sad, remembering him in his pomp, one of the best hurdlers ever, any ground, any distance
February 3, 2018 at 18:05 #1340639Ruby, a horse as old as Faugheen has not won a Champion Hurdle since 1981, it is no disgrace or true reflection of his talent if he falls short this year after the couple of years of injuries he’s had.

Ex RubyLight answers:
Sorry Ricco, can’t find the word disgrace in my comment. He still is an exceptional racehorse, but the old sparkle sadly is gone.
February 3, 2018 at 18:16 #1340646Maybe, I’m hoping for one last glimmer!!
Sorry, I thought you were taking his recent problems as a chance to have a bash at his talent in his prime.
February 3, 2018 at 18:17 #1340647Very odd statements
Supasundae is NOT an average handicapper lol what kind of comment is that?
The field today had ratings from 153-172, i highly doubt hes ran to a low 150s mark because then EVerything Has ran well below form (into 140s), my guess would be hes ran to about 159.
Saying hes finished is just silly, hes well entitled to have a crack at cheltenham, hes had 3 races thiIs term, a group 1 win, pulled up and 2nd in a group 1, if that means a horse is finished then 99% of horse should not be running
In this years CH hes fully entitled to come atleast 2nd or 3rd, bvd of course is the most likely winner. Enjoy hes made it back to track and he could have one last crack at the ch, thats all.
Id be more concerned about the quality in behind, DDS, melon, they were by far bigger disappointments than faugheen and these are the horses for the next few seasons…
February 3, 2018 at 18:23 #1340649There’s no way back to the horse he used to be. I’d estimate he ran to low 150s there. In hindsight, he probably did the same on his comeback this season with all three of those behind probably failing to run to their ratings.
Would you have thought the same had Supasundae not been in the field though, LS? ie Everything else about the race suggests Faugheen is within 10 lbs of his best; albeit on the downgrade. Supasundae worth rating as improving. I agree, Faugheen’s comeback run should also be marked down now, but both are surely low 160’s?
Value Is EverythingFebruary 3, 2018 at 18:26 #1340650He’s entitled to run for a place at cheltenham but anyone who thinks the last two runs scream ch winner are kidding themselves. He’s hit a bit of a wall IMO and (easy to say now) was a real lay today
Fact is there was nothing found after his last run. That was a concern to say the least
A fine horse of course but as most have stated, 10 now after an injury. No
February 3, 2018 at 18:30 #1340651at the end of the day the horse was comfortably beaten by a horse not even entered for the CH.
That’s all you need to know
February 3, 2018 at 19:06 #1340659Thats irrelevant clive the distance he put infront of not just faugheen everyone else suggests hes ran to a fair mark, a mark that would be good enough to be competitive in the CH.
Not being entered in the cheltenham version is irrelevant its to do with ground and trip in the spring
