    Lol, Tom bizarre it is!

Bolger is a genius having his own breeding set up etc. but as a trainer he is one i cannot get a handle on at all.

As you say, he has horses running over all sorts of trips.

The horse himself looks a hard one to work out lol. Bolger started the season flying, so maybe he was fitter than the likes of Taipan and Lough Derg that day?

    God knows.

Makaloun comfortably won the French Derby trial today. He finished a couple of places ahead of Bolshoi Ballet on Soft ground in the French G1 won by Gear Up last year.

Malawi (Aidan O’Brien) appears at Dundalk tomorrow in a maiden and is entered for Ascot and the Curragh Derby.
I take it he could enter the ring via being supplemented if he were to impress on the sand. He is as yet unraced, missing his two year old debut due to the ground.

Happy enough with that, think hurricane lane will improve more for a truly run 1m4f.

Do you think if John Leeper won well on Saturday they would be tempted to have a go? Bit of an unusual prep race, its normally more of a King Edward trial, but there is only one Derby!

I read an article this morning where the trainer was dreaming about the Derby with John Leeper, so one can assume if he won well he would run based on that.

Cheers Mike. Its an unusual route (I think?), but its unusual times. As Ben says, why not.

Dont usually get too involved in specific race discussions and I’m more jumps than flat but HD is surely the polar opposite of a horse suited to Epsom? I always think of it as a race for a fairly nimble horse with good changes of gears throughout the race, not just a grind at the end

I didn’t rate what I saw yesterday at all

Clive what i am wondering is if we saw the real High Definition yesterday. A rushed prep after a bad blood count. In my mind if Epsom wasn’t in the timetable he’d have had another easy week and then work up to the Irish Derby.

TTC my concern with John Leeper’s chances was that in the article i read the trainer avoided the Dante because to him it looked a ‘strong race’. The suspicion is that a real Derby winning candidate wouldve ran in it. Unless he takes a big step up in his development between the race tomorrow and Epsom it may be a step too far.

High definition was ridden as if he would definitely need the race and the paddock watcher on itv said as much. He looked well short on fitness and if the winner is a serious derby hope then HD in 3 weeks time will go very close to winning. Gear up was the big disappointment of the race as I thought he had a genuine chance at Epsom. Bolshoi ballet will have the race set up for him and unless he doesn’t stay the 12 f which looks highly unlikely has to be the likely winner. Be interesting to see if either hd or gear up run at Epsom. I’m sure Ryan will be on Bolshoi ballet but will b very wary of hd or Van Gogh. Every year seems to have the same threads to the derby.
Bolshoi ballet looked awfully good so let’s hope he goes on and blitzes the field.

What did bolshoi ballet beat though?

Impressive yes but he’s beaten nothing decent

Mac swiney clearly didn’t run his race

The comparable time was decent though on the day, which is usually a good sign. BB could only beat what’s presented and look good doing it.

    Derab just bolted up

Wish they’d given him a go in the dante, but that they didn’t suggests hes not quite group 1 level yet

Probably comes slightly too soon now FF, although your last chance saloon if you’re feeling optimistic could be an entry in the Cocked Hat.
