Talk about easing off prize money
look at Russian emporer. They all got left literally an impossible taskJuly 4, 2020 at 17:46 #1492753Sorry .. WD winners Never in doubt.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 4, 2020 at 17:46 #1492754Just seen a time analysis. Serpentine ran the last 3 furlongs in 36.07 seconds with an 8 length lead. They would have had to run the last 3 furlongs in sub 35 seconds – an impossibility.
The winner may well have been the best but the clock tells you the other jockeys gave themselves no chance.
July 4, 2020 at 17:58 #1492758This was yet another frustrating renewal, I could weep at what it’s become.
I hope that Serpentine can prove me wrong, and I hope that he becomes a superstar.
Well done to Sir Harry Lewis and Mickeyjp for finding him.
July 4, 2020 at 18:16 #1492759They’ve had to send a search party out for my selection, Worthily.
Serpentine’s chasers all ended up in a heap which doesn’t offer much encouragement as they were all on the limit for the last three furlongs. The winner looked one that will get stronger as he steps up in trip, and Aidan O’Brien’s comments back that up.
Note to self – Revert to normal mode of letting the Derby pass.
July 4, 2020 at 18:40 #1492761Must be frustrating for Ryan Moore. Coolmore has had three of the last four Derby winners and he has not been on any of them!
A very strange day altogether. I think the absence of a crowd was much more noticeable here than at Newmarket on Guineas day or at Royal Ascot.
July 4, 2020 at 19:25 #1492771Serpentine is a good front runner and other jockeys under estimated him. He won in similar fashion last week at Curragh by 9L. As I was going through cards yesterday, I actually liked this horse and had a small each way bet.
July 4, 2020 at 21:25 #1492792Not a big as surprise to many of us who follow Irish racing. Serpentine absolutely bolted up last weekend as took some pulling up after the line. I thought the unpronounceable one would have led to the six pole then serpentine would have taken over. Emmet McNamara just read the race better and knowing he was on a certain stayer kicked and won the race. Not a fluke just a very good horse superbly ridden. What amazed me is that the other coolmore runners didn’t get scrubbed along much earlier. As aiden keeps repeating they try to give each horse the best chance to win and McNamara explained the race panned out as aiden predicted. Delighted for him.
July 4, 2020 at 23:07 #1492805The winner did get a superb ride but lots of others got poor tactical rides. Maybe they would not have been good enough anyway but we cannot say for sure. That is why it was an unsatisfactory race.
It was a bit like last year’s Irish Derby when the winner was gifted a soft lead. If jockeys learn anything from this it should be: do not give a Galileo colt trained by O’Brien 8 lengths start and expect it to fold up. They keep on galloping.
I also cannot help feeling a few jockeys might have been influenced by the Oaks. The two front runners established a long lead and did come back. Maybe they expected the same thing to happen here. But at least one of the fillies was 100/1 and in as a pacemaker. Serpentine was only 25/1. He should have been taken more seriously.
July 4, 2020 at 23:22 #1492806Not a genuine result imo they went a snail pace behind which shocks me considering the experience of the like of Moore and dettori
July 4, 2020 at 23:45 #1492811Firstly, that was the worst derby line up in 20+ years that I’ve been watching it. Second the stats said the first five in the market can’t win and they didn’t. People knock stats but what a learning curve that was……
The best thing about that race is that we have tomorrow to Bounce back!
July 4, 2020 at 23:54 #1492812Depends what the stats are Frenchy. Who wins a Derby after winning a maiden a week before? Some stats told you Serpentine cudnt win but he did.
July 5, 2020 at 00:04 #1492814I see people comparing it to what happened at navan last night and thats not fair on the jockeys today, trainers/jockeys purposely getting horses beat/ not riding them to do anything other than get a mark, market pointing towards higher rated horses running shockers at 100/1 is not the same as what happened in this race atall
They simply underestimated serpentine and as soon as he hit the corner the electric turn of foot doubled his lead, they definitely tried to close 3-4f out but none of them had the taspeed at that point to close the gap, EK, mogul and RE all plugged on but the winner never just stole the race he went further clear from the bend when everyone else tried to close
Genuinely think he would have won and if they ran the race tomorrow id expect the same result, he looks top drawer, he was not coming back to them anytime soon
Marquand gave the second place horse a cracker
July 5, 2020 at 00:19 #1492816Agreed he looks a lovely horse ham and mickey. That was the best bit of social distancing I’ve seen all week
.. and well done to Tom Marquand also, pretty sure he’d have given English King a better ride than Dettori did today. JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 5, 2020 at 00:20 #1492817Great tactical ride from what’s a pretty decent horse. I would be surprised if he’s the best horse in the race going forward. Poor tactical rides in behind allowed him to gain a lead at what was not a crazy pace early to middle of the race. Then they’d have needed to have been frankel with turbo to catch him.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!July 5, 2020 at 00:26 #1492819Have to concede it was only the jockey booking that deterred me from Serpentine – well done Emmet. I don’t know why some are being so critical of the 2nd and 3rd placed jockeys when they’ve achieved the best possible places for their horses, something most have singularly failed to do.
July 5, 2020 at 00:28 #1492820Jac, I thought Dettori gave English King one of the best non-winning rides in the race (a very low bar set, I concede). Horse never had any chance after jinking at the start from the horror draw – Dettori didn’t have the option to go prominent. Marquand, assisted by a much better draw, was obviously able to race closer to the pace. Although even he’s ridden too conservatively, just to a lesser degree than most of his competitors. I’m pretty certain English King is the best horse in the race.
