Whilst this is obviously a positive move for people without sky or cable to be able to see the race, I wonder if this is an editorially independent decision or whether it is influenced in any way by the sponsor of the Channel 4 racing, Dubai Holding, of which 99.67%!! is owned by Sheikh Mohammed.
March 28, 2008 at 16:03 #154277Of course it is DJ.
I won’t be watching anyway I can’t stand this Dubai World Cup stuff or any form of dirt racing.
As soon as Dubai Holding were announced as sponsors of Channel 4 racing it didn’t need Einstein to figure out the Dubai World Cup would be back on 4.
Sheikh Mohammed is like the Roman Abramovich of flat racing I don’t like him or his Godolphin operation.

Fascinating stuff, Flash…
March 28, 2008 at 16:44 #154297I’ll certainly enjoy watching it, its not usually as high class a race as many on the flat despite the prize money, but for those that are more flat orientated it is a refeshing change from the jumps (which admittedly has been hugely enjoyable this year also).
A good move for Channel 4, for whatever reason

There are some top quality turf races too if you are avers to the sand/dirt/aw.
Who is the Roman Abramovich of jump racing? David Johnson? Trevor Hemmings? JP McManus? Guess you don’t like them much either!?
March 28, 2008 at 17:06 #154301Good news. Top class racing live on terrestrial TV. The new polytrack surface next year should see more quality horses from this side of the world attending. Bring it on!

I don’t mind them at all neither do I mind Prince khalid Abdullah or Sheikh Hamdan or John Magnier or Michael Tabor.
What I despise is the Godolphin organisation and their constant buying up of top two year olds in an attempt to ensure their own success. Buying unknown youngsters like Denman, Master Minded is one thing but buying top class two year olds in an attempt to buy success I hate with a passion.
Also their creation of group dirt races via the presence of Nad Al Sheba etc is not something I like. I’m a traditionalist. Go back 30 years and racing was almost all on turf. I dont even like the Breeders Cup.
Sheikh Mohammed as an owner with his claret and white colours I had no problem with but this ghastly Godolphin opperation is something else.
I know people claim its good for the sport I strongly disagree it may be good for the business but nothing that takes romance out of the sport is good for the sport IMO.
March 28, 2008 at 18:52 #154324One thing which puzzles me is that World Cups in football, rugby, cricket etc take place in a different country everytime they are held.
If the DWC is a World Horse race then why not run it in a different country every year so world racegoers can see top class flat horses.
Just imagine the World Cup races at world wide venues such as Santa Anita,Flemington,Longchamp,Ascot,Happy Valley,Kranji,Southwell
March 28, 2008 at 19:11 #154328Flash..it’s no different to Paul Nicholls and his owners cherry picking the best young horses from France each spring. Denman and Master Minded unknown ? To you maybe.
Coolmore bought Excellent Art privately and Myboycharlie was secured after winning the Angelsey Stakes for someone else. Invasor was poached from Uruguay by Sheikh Hamdan. Your posts are utter nonsense.
March 28, 2008 at 20:18 #154345I dont mean to sound elitist here, but if you take racing remotely seriously surely you should at the very minium have a basic Sky Sub to receive ATR, and for an extra £9.99 per month which hardly breaks the bank (the RP hardcopy sets you back over £47 a month), also have RUK via Setanta?
Then with a decent HDD DVD player you can keep a record of every race run (or at least those you concentrate on as a betting medium eg novice chases) and make measured jusdgements going forward based on what you see with your own eyes rather than a newspaper or TV pundit.
All for £25.99 oper month!
Thus making what BBC or C4 deign to show live or not as the case maybe totally academic.
I had to re read this. Are you serious? lol. What about those who are disabled, low income, unemployed, rely on benefits, are in debt etc etc… How unrealistic to think everyone can afford ‘just’ £26 a month. I personally have a good income so can afford both channels. But i’d never ignore the fact that £26 to, say a single parent, could be the difference between having a cooker, washer etc if they had to rely on paying bit by bit through catalogues / hire purchase..
To think people on low incomes don’t take racing seriously is a bit rude isn’t it?March 28, 2008 at 20:55 #154357Just imagine the World Cup races at world wide venues such as … Southwell
Yeah – in 2015 – having been transferred from Great Leighs cos the track hasn’t opened yet!
March 28, 2008 at 21:07 #154361The Dubai World Cup isn’t a world cup though is it its just a name given to it its just basically a Godolphin initiated meeting that the odd decent horse will attend. It will never be a world cup the nearest flat racing has to a world cup is the Breeders Cup.
Dubai World Cup is gimmicky. Most people don’t want to know about it in truth they’d rather watch the meeting at Doncaster.
My opinion and I’m sticking to it lol.

Couldn’t put it better myself. Great post, especially the last line.
Utter hypocrisy and lack of intelligence..
March 28, 2008 at 23:05 #154384Also, for Flash, i believe the world cup has greater worldwide strength in depth than the Bteeders Cup.

As in ‘La la la – I’m not listening’? That is fine, but I don’t understand why you feel you have to be so proactively negative about it Flash – just seems a bit of a pointless attention-seeking rant!!!
For the record, I disagree. There is something intrinsically interesting and useful in comparing the quality of racehorse populations from different countries on such a scale. That kind of thing won’t tickle everyone’s fancy (I wouldn’t dream of trying to convert you), but, as an example, I am surprised and warmed by the competitiveness of South American and South African bred horses. The breeding is generally much cheaper and yet (at the top level at least) there is no significant difference in quality.
March 29, 2008 at 09:18 #154426Channel 4 are covering one race from Dubai and as a result send out an excessive number of over paid numpties to enjoy the place.
Let’s see 1 Derek Thompson (its 37 degrees here) 2 Simon Holt 3 Alice Plunkett 4 Alistair (its 37 degrees here) Down 5 Emma (Bling Bling Shop Shop) Spencer plus crew.
Let’s hope Channel 4 don’t ever get a share of the licence fee or an expenses report like the MP’s
Most sickening Emma Spencer on the edge of the pool in her designer gear and being quoted in a newspaper as saying she was going to shop, walk and shop.
Simon Holt apparently said great being sent to Dubai to do 2 and a half minutes work.
I assume Dubai Holdings paid for the trip. Let’s hope we get some racing coverage out of the excursion.
This will be nothing though to the number of people us licence payers will be paying to stand at Aintree next week and say over to you ????? on the other side of the track.
