After the gold cup last year a friend of mine said Denman will never come back the same horse after the gold cup because of how tired he was at the end of the race, i hope he was wrong!!
September 19, 2008 at 13:21 #181632What a unfortunate start to the NH season – hopefully Denman can come out of this and we’ll see him back on the track in the near future.

Reminds me what HF said about Kauto straight after the race…
September 19, 2008 at 14:09 #181636let’s hope the horse makes a full recovery.

September 19, 2008 at 14:18 #181641Its really a blow for Jumps game , lets hope he recovers and gets back to his brilliant best
Dave 22 has touched on a good point though , has that monstrous display in the Gold Cup taken its toll
I really hope not
cheers

September 19, 2008 at 16:33 #181647didn’t Crisp’s amazing Grand National cause him to have heart problems? Watching Denman has always reminded me of him, for obvious reasons. The thing about Denman is that his jockey’s aren’t hard on him in a race, it’s his own courage and determination that win the races…wasn’t he hobdayed before they bought him? I wondered if any previous symptoms prior to that have been put down to a breathing rather than a heart problem, but then he would have been thoroughly tested for everything at that stage. If it is a virus, even if the virus itself hasn’t damaged his heart any exertions whilst coming down with a virus could do so, or so I thought. I was told once that shire horses were prone to heart problems because of having such a heavy frame. I hope I’m wrong but I do wonder if he’ll be seen on the racetrack again.
September 19, 2008 at 16:43 #181648Nicholls seems positive about the situation comparing it to a problem that EUROTREK had and which was rectified.
Mind you, I guess it’s his job to be positive on such an issue and not provoke panic amongst the public.

Denman will hopefully be a little tougher.
Whatever happens now, this will be the excuse if Denman gets beaten.
September 19, 2008 at 18:06 #181651Nicholls said last week in the racing post that he wasnt sure how denman would get on carrying top weight in the hennessy with horses like Big Bucks running off 10 stone. Apparently Big Bucks has come on leaps and bounds this season. Now denman is out of the hennessy, so I’d expect any money for big bucks in the hennessy market will be worth noting.
September 19, 2008 at 20:20 #181664Hopefully Denman will be stunning us again soon.
I remember Eric’s Charm was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat during last season after a few poor runs. He won a tough handicap chase about a month later!
September 19, 2008 at 21:09 #181665All points noted – many thanks!
Could be time for Denman’s ante-post Gold Cup backers to start mailing him some Shredded Wheat to help keep his dicky ticker healthy…

Alternatively, couldn’t they just run him with a pacemaker?
September 19, 2008 at 22:58 #181670It is a worry. It is true to say that Crisp was never the same horse again after that fantastic National (the first one I ever saw in colour and I can remember back to Ayala) and the mighty Freddie, Scotland’s great champion a contemporary of Arkle (second to him in the 1965 Hennessey) was forced into retirement with heart strain (different thing I know but he had a few hard races).
Grundy and Bustino were finished by the 1975 King George. These hard relentless gallops do take their toll.
I am sure the best will be done by the horse as Paul Nicholls and his team love horses and are horsemen of the highest order. lets hope we see him at Cheltenham fit and well, never mind what he does in the meantime.
September 19, 2008 at 23:08 #181672Looking for a more positive example, didn’t three-time Festival winner Willie Wumpkins suffer from a heart murmur for many years?

September 20, 2008 at 11:27 #181703Denman is to undergo surgery, reports The Telegraph.
[i:6kfpqlf7]Paul Barber, his part-owner, remains optimistic, however, that the Gold Cup winner will be back racing again before next year.
”He has a fibrillating heart, which I believe is similar to what Tony Blair had,” Barber said.
“The vets will stop and restart Denman’s heart in a split second. He goes to Newmarket on Monday. It’s unlikely that we won’t be able to get him back [to his peak], but the operation will either be 100 per cent successful or not.
“If he shows any signs that he is not himself, he’ll be retired,” said Barber, who added that the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown was the gelding’s earliest target.[/i:6kfpqlf7]

He’s here all week.
September 25, 2008 at 18:36 #182278Good news
Thanks for the link Marble. There’s also an article in today’s Racing Post.
It would appear that Denman is as good as can be expected after treatment. It also appears that they have stabilised the condition with the use of drugs, quinidine, rather than having to undergo the rigours of surgery, no matter how small an operation it may or may not have meant.
All connections seem very upbeat about his condition and It’s a relief to see him in good hands where they’re not going to rush him back into full training, resuming basically from scratch.
It’ll be interesting to read the reports in Paul Nicholls’ Saturday column in the Racing Post, though I would imagine every time he is interviewed he will be asked about the progress of Denman.
So far so good and hopefully the good news about Denman only gets better.
