As Ahoy Senor has been entered I’m suggesting we all guard Joe on a rota – 12-hour shifts – and keep him away from betting shops and online betting sites until Saturday evening.
Protektorat just wins, as FF would say (though not necessarily about this horse in this race).

I’m happy to meet up with him and take a photo of him sat on Ahoy Senor for free
If both he and Protektorat turn up and run to near their best they will probably do what most do in this race and gut out their chances in the Gold CupGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

That is what I am worried about.
On the one hand, I am all for horses running more often because there should be more to the season than four days in March.
On the other hand, I would prefer see my 12/1 Gold Cup bet stay safe and warm in his stable rather than run his heart out in a race that is usually a terrible prep race for the festival!
January 23, 2023 at 18:15 #1631973On the first Saturday in March 1982 Silver Buck shouldered 12st7lb to victory at Market Rasen – a couple of weeks later he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The following year on the corresponding Saturday Bregawn was sent to Hereford where, IIRC, he carried top weight to victory in a 3m1f Limited Handicap Chase.
Two weeks later he also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Any chaser thought to be throwing its Cheltenham Gold Cup chance away in the last Saturday in January never had a chance to begin with in my book.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 23, 2023 at 19:37 #1631984A most kind and charitable offer, Ian. Much appreciated. I used to bore folks to death on here with the unsuitability of The Cotswold for Gold Cup hopes. Either connections don’t do their homework or Ian is right; they were never going to win anyway. I can see Ahoy Senor routing them on Saturday and being cut savagely for the big one, only to pull up there, still not over his exertions. I hope Lucinda sees sense and waits for Newbury.
January 24, 2023 at 21:48 #1632065Since 1997, 56 horses who ran in The Cotswold went on to contest the Gold Cup. Only one won it in the same season – Looks Like Trouble (2000). Most winners do run in the Gold Cup that season.
January 25, 2023 at 00:33 #1632078Hoping that Noble Yeats can confirm his suitability for The Gold Cup here, but no real point in me backing him, having bet him already for March.
At 17-2, I’ve went with former winner Frodon. Good run in The King George, and though a big ask to win this at 11, I think the odds are generous for a horse with his record round here (and elsewhere). This is the strongest looking renewal for a while, certainly my miles better than 2019 when Frodon won, but I’m hopeful.
Topped up 14’s
Frodon 14’s
January 25, 2023 at 07:24 #1632096Protektorat for me.
January 25, 2023 at 20:50 #1632185No bigger fan (and ‘benefactor’) of Frodon over the years, but 3m2f around Cheltenham too much for him these days imho. Cannot deny that the 7s avail is very tempting, but i’m resisting.
Prob give in to temptation on Saturday though
January 26, 2023 at 05:22 #1632216If it’s soft or worse surely it’ll be a war between Noble and Skeltons horse , with around 6 weeks to Cheltenham it’s hardly the best prep , as for Ah Senor , you just hope he jumps around

January 27, 2023 at 21:31 #1632430Skybet money back up to £10 2nd or 3rd in this
Protektorat looked all class last time
I’d have him evs not 13/8 so him for me
January 27, 2023 at 22:03 #1632436The conditions of this race are such that there isn’t actually much between quite a few of them on OR.
Protektorat absolutely has to be favourite, though.
Noble Yeats is slight shades of The Thinker – won a Midlands National the season before he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Noble Yeats showed a turn of foot I’d not hitherto seen in 40 years watching the game from a staying chaser last time out.
He has to be second in.
How many more bad races does Ahoy Senor have to run before he starts a double-digit price?
Can’t believe the love for him that’s still out there.
Love Frodon but he can’t beat the front two any more.
Sounds Russian doesn’t actually have that much to find.
Unlike Henderson to run horses out of their depth – Dusart beat the former at Ayr and might outrun his odds.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 27, 2023 at 22:14 #1632439I’d say Protektorat is the standout form choice from this and last season but Noble Yeats is improving at a rate of knots.
I want to tell myself 13/8 is a cracking bet for the Skelton horse but It’s entirely possible Noble Yeats improves again and wins comfortably.
I think a reverse forecast could be a good bet but the odds wouldn’t make for great results at the current prices.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 27, 2023 at 23:20 #1632455I still find it hard to abandon Ahoy Senor. Hoping for a decent round of jumping and he must in the mix.
Ahoy Senor 17/2
January 27, 2023 at 23:25 #1632457If Ahoy Senor wins tomorrow, I will personally apologise to Joe and all the horse’s fans on here and undertake not to eat another chocolate hob nob until Ash Wednesday.
But I’m buying a packet from Waitrose tomorrow and fully expect to be making short work of them tomorrow night!
