Once again though some may argue Bankable put up an impressive performance given the proximity back to the third, this was very much a two horse race, with the rest of the field well below Group standard.
Jury still out.
So is Bankable Group standard or not? Would he be a deserving short price favourite off 99 in a handicap?[/b]
August 27, 2008 at 19:05 #178379IMO Bankable is a borderline Gr3/Gr2 horse but I couldn’t expect him to give ANY weight to the likes of HTN or Ravens Pass and beat them.
The Prix Daniel Wilderstein at LON the day before Arc day is a potential Group race for him.
August 27, 2008 at 19:59 #178383Until he wins a Group race, thereby proving me wrong, I would say he is short of possessing the ability to win a Group Race in the UK, Ireland or France.
So you wait for something to actually happen before daring to think that it might be possible?
Even a basic knowledge of the formbook would tell you that Bankable has already achieved a level of form that would be good enough to win a Group 3 in this country.
August 28, 2008 at 09:54 #178419I was dubious prior to saturday but I would agree now he is definitely up to that standard. I would run him over 10f next. He wouldn’t have been far away in something like the eclipse this year, which was one of the weaker G1’s of the season.
August 28, 2008 at 17:31 #178458Adopting your logic firefox, I take it you weren’t convinced Raven’s Pass was a Group-quality three-year-old until Saturday, as he’d previously failed to win a Group race this year.
To use another sport, presumably Lewis Hamilton’s string of podium finishes failed to convince you he was a world-class driver. Once he won one though…
September 14, 2008 at 19:53 #180968Wondered how long it would be before you were on here crowing (!)
I agree with the first part of your post firefox. He was disappointing today and should really have been up to winning – he got warm though and possibly just had an off day.
While I wouldn’t suggest he was a value bet today, quite the opposite in fact, I still maintain the form he has shown this season means he is well up to winning at this level.
September 15, 2008 at 13:00 #181090Well obviously he hasnt won, but that isn’t down to him not being good enough…
I had a similar argument about Borderlescott on the Stewards Cup thread in the "Big Races" section. Apparently he was a serial loser who had a problem and would never win a decent race. That was before he won a Group 1 of course….
And by the way I am not "keeping the faith" – I haven’t backed the horse once this season (and was actually delighted to see him beaten yesterday) I just think you are totally wrong in your assessment of his ability.
September 15, 2008 at 13:32 #181100…..or, of course, he backed the winner!

Colin
PS…………glad you sorted out that problem with your keyboard.
September 15, 2008 at 13:32 #181101No – I backed the winner.
Bankable was a deserving favourite but was too short yesterday imo.
If you are only going to judge a horse on whether he wins or loses a race and have no other tools by which to assess his merit, then there is no point in continuing this debate.
September 15, 2008 at 13:42 #181104Struck me again that he was outbattled. He doesnt seem to quite go through with it does he?
September 15, 2008 at 13:57 #181107He’s not a 10f horse – the formbook will tell you that!
He’ll be a backable price over a mile next time out (hoepfully)
September 15, 2008 at 14:20 #181110Possibly David. Hard to weigh that one up. Just sensed from watching that it just felt he wouldnt go through with it. Certainly initial look at his breeding would suggest 10f is within compass, but reversal of form with Lady G suggests otherwise
September 15, 2008 at 14:32 #181112Shameless aftertiming!!!!!
So what price should Bankable have been then? .
You asked whether I laid the horse…
I thought he shoulld be around evens yesterday, but it is clear I’m dealing with a simpleton here, so I will not continue this debate. Life is too short.
September 15, 2008 at 14:47 #181115Aftertiming is a dreadful sin and wasn’t the intention – I was merely expanding when asked whether I had laid Bankable. For that, I humbly apologise….
September 16, 2008 at 16:56 #181276It’s a lot better than the Amir Khan fight on here! (lasts a lot longer, too..)
Listen, Bankable is becoming disappointing, I cannot deny that…but, I do think he will win a group race, I really do – in the UK too!
However, if the horse stays in training we will surely find out if Firefox is ultimately right…or the *ankable believers.
I did not see the race, though going by that "he didn’t put it all in" comment from a previous poster (apologies for not remembering the name) I would like to have seen how *ankable raced.
He should be out again this season..

Wouldn’t be too sure about that db, particularly not on fast ground?
However, his trainer says in this morning’s RP that the horse is ‘adaptable’, which suggests that he may be ridden more positively than hitherto. He would certainly need to be, judged on his Hunt Cup run. - AuthorPosts
