Nathan, what makes you think that Barry Connell would swerve a battle even with an unbeaten Marine Nationale? Unless he sends him chasing.
September 19, 2023 at 16:01 #1663647Marine Nationale is good but even Barry knows he wouldn’t get within 10 lengths of Constitution Hill
I’m not convinced his Supreme win was as good as it looked.. Facile Vega needed to commit sooner and still would have lost but that horse had a horrible prepGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
September 19, 2023 at 16:10 #1663649I agree with you on that, Nathan. But nevertheless the Supreme was quite a decent renewal in 2023. There could be more to come from Barry’s horse.
Good luck with your holiday vacation, if everything has gone on CH. It could turn out to be just a weekend trip…..September 19, 2023 at 16:27 #1663650For me the Champion Chase really falls in between several stalls and tends to end up almost being a consolation prize for horse that really didn’t fit into more preferred targets.
If you have a 2m horse that is either not quick enough for a Champion Hurdle or falls just below that class (thus excluding handicaps from being a viable option) then the Champion Chase is an alternative option to look at because a bigger emphasis is put on jumping/stamina (assuming your horse takes to fences) and thus you don’t have to be as naturally quick. This also explains the reason a lot of Champion Chase winners (pre Ryanair Chase days) were quite capable of winning over further than 2m but were not sufficiently stamina ladened enough to stay the Gold Cup trip.
If you have a chasing prospect, we know the Gold Cup and not the Champion Chase is ideally your endgame goal but then if your horse doesn’t stay the alternative might have been to look to drop back in trip like One Man did (and Florida Pearl tried to do) to win a Champion Chase….obviously with the Ryanair Chase pretty much ever non stayers goes there instead of looking at the Champion Chase.
September 19, 2023 at 16:55 #1663652Correct decision in my opinion.
September 19, 2023 at 17:15 #1663654The easy choice and the right choice; it takes a unique blend of speed, stamina, fortitude, and good fortune to complete the CH/GC double. C Hill has the speed, but maybe not the other qualities.
Underlines again the heirarchy of prestige; GC, then CH, then 2MCC, and trailing behind, the stayer’s hurdle.September 19, 2023 at 17:58 #1663662If you take the view 12/1 to never win another Champion Hurdle in practical terms might not be entirely dissimilar to laying 1/12 (1.08) Constitution Hill to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle, perhaps the bet looks different.
Far from being a terrible wager, I consider the 12/1 an absolute “rick” by William Hill.
So much can go wrong in this game.
And 7/2 for two would be my second preference – he’s 1/2 to win next March and may yet go chasing if he wins that.
4/6 three is absolutely shocking value.
Imagine tying up £3,000 to win £2,000 and having to sweat it out for years on him winning exactly two more.
You’d be a lot safer putting the cash in an ISA.

Agreed, value is not everything

It doesn’t, you throw the ticket on to the log burner in the middle of March

September 19, 2023 at 18:47 #1663667The 12/1 would payout when the horse is racing in the sky !
September 19, 2023 at 19:03 #1663670Impaire Et Passe and State Man staying over hurdles to take on CH.
September 19, 2023 at 19:04 #1663671Fair play to Willie Mullins as they could have easily dodged the clash

Impaire Et Passe is the only equine threat to the champ (Marine Nationale is supposed to be going chasing), but he will need to improve at least a stone and a half to get anywhere near CH.
September 19, 2023 at 19:18 #1663673State Man is very underrated just because The Hill beat him handily. He’s a top class 2m hurdler in his own right and would’ve won plenty of the previous Champion Hurdle renewals.
Impaire et Passe looked far from a 2 miler at Punchestown.
September 19, 2023 at 19:23 #1663674We need to see how they all perform when they return, must admit I thought State Man would take the fencing route.
The more I know the less I understand.
September 19, 2023 at 19:44 #1663675What’s Mullins going to do tactically
Impaire et Passe will want a strong pace as he looks to be a strong stayer but that will also bring the best out of Constitution Hill
They let him make the running and State Man didn’t get near him
Good news though as it will hold the price up enough to float into multiplesGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
