BTW A Plus Tard won the most prestigious NH race by 15 lengths, and going away all th time; the chances of C Hill (or even Facile Vega) being good enough even to take part in a Gold Cup are small.
We do love our morning glories.April 12, 2022 at 19:16 #1593272A “morning glory” is a reference to a horse which works well at home, but is unproven on the track.
That hardly applies to a Cheltenham Festival winner.

April 12, 2022 at 20:48 #1593305They weren’t “morning glories” either.
They might not have gone on to be as good as some hoped, but both were Grade 1 Ballymore winners at the Cheltenham Festival.

Perhaps that is because they are not Gold Cup horses
A bit like saying Liverpool won’t win the Spanish league

can’t see that happening soon so hope its one of those long term bets

April 12, 2022 at 21:39 #1593312I guess I’ll just have to bank on Liverpool landing my other big odds ante-post bet in the World Cup in Qatar, then.

It’s a novice race. The Marsh is a novice race too. Ferny Hollow and Appreciate it (for example) are currently also morning glories. Envoi Allen could’ve stood up and won the Marsh and still been a morning glory. Doesn’t matter if it’s unsoundness, misfortune or simply not being good enough, a fab flashy winner of novice races in super times is a morning glory till it goes and wins some decent open races.
It comes back to Kevin Blake’s argument against allowing horses to have a full season in bumpers, a full season in novice hurdles and a full season in novice chases before they get to the point and start doing their actual real job. I think he likened it to having a junior under 30s football division or something.
April 14, 2022 at 22:19 #1593703I’m faintly amazed tbh that some don’t seem to understand the very racing definition of a “morning glory.”
It has always been a horse which looks exceptional on the gallops but fails to shine at an actual racecourse in actual races, often not winning a race of any description, or maybe winning a Maiden/Novice contest but getting found out at a higher level.
Novice contest or not, no horse which wins a Grade 1 could possibly be validly labelled a “morning glory.”
That’s it and all about it.
End of.
Period.

Not sure why CH is being called a morning glory, to my eye he has shown substantially more than the likes on Envoi Allen or Bob Olinger, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I haven’t been this confident about a jumps horse ever, I could well be wrong, but I like to think I have a good eye for star talent.
