It’s an allusion from Catcher on the Rye; ‘My brother Allie had this left-handed fielder’s mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink. He wrote them on it so that he’d have something to read when he was in the field and nobody was up to bat. He’s dead now.’
Altho his brother has died, Holden refers to him as if still present; I can still picture the five of us, packed into the late Patsy’s little red Datsun, carefree and happy, our lives in front of us.
And I have no pics; pre-mobile phone days.March 29, 2022 at 05:44 #1590185Apologies, Befair, a bit thoughtless of me. It’s the “grammar police complex” what made me do it. It wasn’t done to intentionally demean your post. Sorry to Ian and anyone else who were in anyway offended.
Didn’t understand everything when I read ‘Catcher In The Rye’ but I’m glad I read it.
March 29, 2022 at 06:39 #1590186Well done, Colin, I always think it takes a big man to apologise so all credit to you for that.

F(r)iends…. (and racehorses)April 8, 2022 at 14:28 #1592036That’s a boost to the Constitution Hill form from Jonbon considering he looked knackered after the Supreme he has had to battle hard to win that today.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 8, 2022 at 14:32 #1592038Jonbon had an OR of 147 going into this, look where Villa Ardanza, rated 141 has finished.
Beaten NINETEEN lengths.
I think Gladiateur said he’d like to see Jonbon off 147 in a Greatwood and though that’s unlikely, yes, 147 may be lenient.
Which just boosts Constitution Hill further.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 8, 2022 at 14:46 #1592048Exactly.
If Villa Ardanza ran to that OR of 141 you could rate Jonbon on 160 and Constitution Hill 182 – that’s Night Nurse, best of all time, territory.
Dangerous to take such things literally, but easy to see why so many of us are excited about Constitution Hill.

And with the rider standing up in the irons and saluting the crowd.
April 8, 2022 at 14:58 #1592056How good is El Fabiolo really? He could be around 145, maybe 150 since he is trained by WPM. I think Jonbon did the job as he usually does. He isn’t the horse to really destroy the opposition in a truly run race. But the fact that he won at Aintree after such a tough race at Cheltenham speaks in his favour.
However, I would like to leave Constitution Hill out of this and wait until next season.
April 8, 2022 at 15:39 #1592073All fair comment, but the Supreme form certainly hasn’t been undermined by this.

Fair cop but CH was going to obliterate WPMs first string at Cheltenham before he came down!
Also I’m not sure El Fabiolo should be underestimated just yet, they were a mile clear of everything else and the mistake at the last added to the slight hampering at the second last didn’t do him any favours. Could be a decent horse in his own right.
April 8, 2022 at 15:52 #1592083As stated, the third had an OR of 141 beforehand.
What mark do others think he ran to, then?
