    Only managed to catch the last race and the commentator called the second in front when he never got within a length of leader. Anyone know who it was and is he the same one who consistently makes mistakes at Perth?

    No idea who it is yet, as I’m still in the office, but on the related point it’s worth reiterating that the commentator’s position at Perth is absolutely awful, among the very worst on the circuit. The bespoke TV pictures aren’t the greatest help in discerning a tight finish until very close home, either.

    A shame, as little else at Scone Palace fails to pass muster.

    GC, no doubt in serious discussion with Speaker Michael Martin as to what his next move should be.

    It was Iain McKenzie calling at Newton Abbot.

    I have not seen the race but I would caution against being overly critical – especially if you were watching on TV as the angles can be deceptive.

    Lee MacKenzie

    Can’t remember if he’s called at Perth, perhaps he’ll inform you himself :wink:

    edit

    : Lee or Iain? :)

    8)

    He told me he was going to pen a letter to the whips or whosoever else, containing the words;

    "I resign"

    Turns out the crafty little git wrote;

    "I re-sign"

    Both have commentated at Perth – Lee is certainly a member of the "60 club" to have called at all extant courses bar Ffos Las, but Iain has probably been the more frequent visitor to Perth in recent years of the two.

    Thanks, I appreciate that Perth could present problems, but I didn’t realise there were difficulties at Newton Abbot as well.

    Yes it was definitely Iain Mackenzie at Newton Abbot today.

    I think Darren Owen is the best I have heard yet at Perth, he very rarely makes a mistake even though the commentary position is an a really bad place in the grandstand among the crowd and quite often I have noticed on a horrible wet day the bookies umbrellas block the last couple of furlongs.

    Perth doesn’t seem to really have a regular course commentator its normally either Doug Fraser, Iain Mackenzie or Darren Owen but seems to vary from time to time as I have also heard Lee McKenzie and Alan Howes there too.

    Digressing from the original post I know but does anyone have a list of Irish commentators? I quite enjoy one of them who does the minor tracks – invariably adds a bit of ‘colour’ to the closing stages.

    I know there are only so many phrases you can use but must admit to never liking the use of ‘boxing on’ and what seems to be a new kid on the blocks, ‘lashing home’.

    It’s pretty much all Des Scahill, Peter O’Hehir and Jerry Hannon as far as Irish Rules races are concerned. I think the last-named may be the guy you mean – criminally under-used and surely the heir apparent once Des finally jacks it in.

    Jerry has also called on a very small handful of meetings over here, and all of them "Irish Nights". Sandown and Worcester certainly used him in that capacity during 2006, in the same way that the former wheeled out JA McGrath for their "Aussie Night" last July.

    There is a fourth voice I’ve heard VERY occasionally at one or two of the Northern Irish meetings, but I’m beggared if I know who it is. Certainly not Tony O’Hehir, and – from what I remember of him on Five Live – possibly not Peadar Flanagan, either.

    I think you are almost certainly correct as I know it’s not the first two. For me he has a ‘style’ all of his own.

    I think the fourth Irish caller you may have heard (normally Down Royal) is Justin O’Hanlon (RP Irish hack).

    Think I once heard Gary O’Brien (ATR) call at Limerick a couple of years ago. Should get more gigs.

    Jerry Hannon deffo should get the top Irish gigs IMO…

    Seems Darren is on a Scottish tour at the moment since he was calling at Hamilton last Friday.
