Fists, Osana went to the front in the Champ Hurdle and slowed the pace down, putting him at a massive advantage over most of the field. When you watch the race back and bear in mind how far some horses are behind him and the pace is slow, some of the serious contenders, especially those who brought staying power to the table had an absolute mountain to climb and were written off after a few furlongs through bad pace judgement.
The fact that Katchit had more speed than anything and wasnt held up out of contention is what won him the race IMO. Sublimity also IMO probably had enough speed to get involved in the finish but made crucial mistakes that cost him any chance.
Katchit aside Osana led the Champ hurdle field a merry dance IMO and any wind I would expect played very little or no part in deciding the result. .
November 6, 2008 at 16:31 #188335I’m not sure I entirely agree, Bulwark. Osana was first off the bridle of the principles, and it was only his determination and class that allowed him to get as close as he did at the finish. He hardly led them a merry dance.
Fist, the results on the Tuesday tend to torpedo your "Wind" theory clear out of the water. Far from being disavantaged, almost every winner and placed horse was ridden prominently.
November 8, 2008 at 07:00 #188718A long shot at this point, I know, but if Pierrot Lunaire from the Nicholls yard gets there, it won’t be the price you’d get now

It can only get there if some numpty buys it and puts it in the race for a bit of fun. Doesn’t have an earthly.

So 14’s would be very short for a horse without an ‘earthly’ then?
November 8, 2008 at 21:55 #188824Ridiculously short.

*Looks in general direction of the groin*
We shall see…
November 9, 2008 at 20:07 #188925They claim Pierrot Lunaire was unlucky against Binny but never gave the reason for saying so. I watched the race on several occassions and despite the third horse going really well 2 out they drew away from him like he was standing still. He is obviously very useful.
The difference between Binny and Pierrot Lunaire that day was that Binny jumped like a pig that day so I am confused where PN was coming from when he came away with that corker about being unlucky,
He did very well to win at Aintree and looked to have improved a lot, but he only had 10.8 on his back and Captain Cee Bee never ran a message that day. In contract to that the 2nd Blue Bajan is a very good animal and he beat him hands down.
He looked held first time out when he fell the other day but the key to him could be good ground.
Wouldn’t have thought he would be in the same class as Binny and but time will tell. PN says he would love to have a horse good enough torun in the Champion and I think he has one but running in it and winning it is a totaly different ball game.
16/1? If one or two of the others run and win before he does he’ll drift a bit. Best time to back him is just before he runs if you think he is going to win the race he is entered in. A PN CH horse could win a cart race and the bookes will knoch half a doxen points off them without batting an eyelid.
November 9, 2008 at 20:17 #188927Has Paul Nicholls actually stated that Pierrot Lunaire will go to Cheltenham and that it is a possiblity? ? ?
His main target is the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton as far as this year is concerned.
He bypassed Cheltenham last year and to be honest, he maybe seen to suit tracks such as Aintree and Kempton more so than a track like Cheltenham for example.
November 9, 2008 at 20:17 #188928Please correct me on this but I always think that a champion hurdler should be just that…a hurdler; not overly big and fast and fluent at the hurdles…I tend to ignore horses that seem meant to pursue a career over fences sooner rather than later..Crack Away Jack looks like a chaser to me, as did Sizing Europe [only a personal opinion…don’t shoot me!]
November 9, 2008 at 20:18 #188929as did Sizing Europe [only a personal opinion…don’t shoot me!]
Dont worry, John Francome thinks the same.
November 9, 2008 at 20:26 #188930I’m in good company then! [oooh if only..in my dreams perhaps….]

.When he says it’s his main target surely the CH would be on the cards if he won it? Especially as he is destined to meet binocular who is an intended runner.
November 9, 2008 at 21:12 #188941Who knows.
He is only a 4 year old, so who knows what Paul Nicholls will decide this season.

He may well be a good chaser someday but irrespective of what we think he has won round Cheltenham beating a horse that David Pipe said would be a Champion Hurdle horse some day.
He’s still a young horse and has proved he has the engine to win good hurdle races. He came from a long way back at Cheltenham and won going away. I never saw any signs of him balooning his hurdles and he looked fluent enough for me.
The say Sizing Europe can’t jump hurdles properly but he has the longest stride imaginable which more than makes up for any slight jumping errors if you can call them that.
In truth Crackaway Jack is yet to be beaten when wanted and he has some nce scalps to his name in Sqadron, Ashkazar and the he gave over a stone to Squadron and beat him again. Squadron was always going to get the upper hand on Pierre L the other day getting only 4lbs so the form is standing up well.
I still belive he is he one Binocular has to beat in the CH. He goes for the Fighting Fifth next and I for one doubt if I will be opposing him, chasing type or not.
November 9, 2008 at 21:36 #188945When he beat Osana though fists, he beat him by 4 lengths but Osana was giving him 6lbs on the day.
November 9, 2008 at 21:47 #188949Thought Henderson had said that Binocular will run at Haydock on Saturday week Fists?
Can’t imagine they’d be going to Newcastle only a week later for the Fighting Fifth
