Not entirely true wex
The mares hurdle as a whole is a weaker race than the ryanair, but has a much more solid fav, BDD has less chance of beating AJ at this point than she does UDS for multiple reasons, sex allowance in the ryanair and they way she jumps a fence are in her favour, beating AJ over hurdles first time round cheltenham will be no small achievement off levels.
The without market like LS initially alluded to and like kev just said is wrong(probably), but at the same time its (probably)right, shes a total unknown atm, much like karalee was when she stepped up to face AJ and she had looked as good over a hurdle as BDD has over a fence
If anything is “wrong” its vvm @11/4 without AJ, that should arguably be 9/4 – 2/1 at best, afterall, who is ruby going to sit on, hard to see him passing up vvm
March 1, 2018 at 13:52 #1344440You say that but he picked Limini last year.
March 1, 2018 at 16:46 #1344457The reason for that was obvious at the time.
March 1, 2018 at 21:43 #1344481COUldnt agree more with you guys on Bennie des doo, seems the only horse with the real potential to be better than apples jade so even though 10/1 might seem short for a horse who isn’t proven over these shores over hurdles it’s not bad considering her potential, just hard to lump on as she’s a bit of an unknown quantity
March 1, 2018 at 22:20 #1344484Can’t help thinking Vroum Vroum is showing something serious at home. Had setbacks and injuries and her future and value is in the breeding shed. Literally no reason at all to run her but yet she runs.
March 1, 2018 at 22:38 #1344485Yeah, i agree gman, 11/4 w/o is a serious looking price
March 2, 2018 at 15:42 #1344565yeah tbh wouldn’t begrudge anyone playing both VVM and BDD in the w/o markets, 11/4 and 5/1 aren’t they? Not the worst combined price!
March 2, 2018 at 15:53 #1344567I just got 6/4 on Apples Jade with Skybet. £8 limit
March 5, 2018 at 19:41 #1344883What I would give for the Francois Nicholle trained De Bon Coeur to line up here. She is unbeaten in her 9 completed starts after her bloodless victory yesterday, in what was touted to be the strongest hurdle race to be ran in France all season.
This years talking horse Saint Calvados tried to give her a race before and paid a heavy price for it, finishing a well beaten 6th.
Not only would I make DBC strong favourite to put Apples Jade in her place, I think she would give Buveur D’air a real run for his money in the Champion.
Unfortunately with the prize money in France being so good, its unlikely we will see her come across the Channel anytime soon. However RUK’s Claude Charlet insists he will do his best do persuade the owners to bring her over for next years festival. Heres hoping.
March 5, 2018 at 21:14 #1344890If we want to see this type of proper horse over here regularly, Voleur, the BHA needs to raise its game to compete with French prize money by allocating more resources to Jumps whilst reducing the amount of cash thrown at the Flat. It would also have the benefit of attracting more and better quality juvenile and novice hurdlers away from the AW. Then we might get Champion Hurdles with greater depth. The BHA must begin to realise which is the more popular code, which gets most viewers, which has the races and festivals that engender greater betting interest, etc. (because it’s more exciting).
March 6, 2018 at 00:31 #1344907I wouldn’t agree that reallocating prize money from the flat is either necessary or even possible, GM.
The gulf in sponsorship must play a huge part in that, I’m not sure there is an awful lot the BHA can actually do. When you have the might of organisations like QIPCO supporting flat racing, its no wonder the jumps can’t compete.
What the BHA can do perhaps, is to increase efforts to attract greater levels of sponsorship for jumps racing.
I would personally hate to see flat racing take a step backwards just because jumps racing can’t take a step forward by itself.
March 6, 2018 at 00:45 #1344914To illustrate my point about the gulf in sponsorship levels, the most high profile jumps race ran in Britain is of course the Grand National, whilst the Derby is as to the flat.
The Grand National is sponsored by Randox Health, which last year boasted operating profits of £12.3m. Investec, the Derby sponsors however, boasted operating profits of £664m. This trend is consistent with the majority of each code’s respective sponsors.
This could be attributed to the more prestigious, and more international nature of flat racing.
March 6, 2018 at 07:11 #1344918On VVM 11/4 NRNB. They wouldnt chnace her if she wasnt right. Class mare in the race without Apples Jade. 11/4 is massive and will be 6/4 W/O on the day
March 6, 2018 at 07:58 #1344919I’m in the exact same boat, atthepost. I’m a bit worried about Benie Des Dieux after listening to Patrick Mullins last night at the Racing Post preview.
March 6, 2018 at 10:11 #1344931Fair point, Voleur, but I fear for the long-term future of Jump racing if it is not helped and it seems silly to me for the authorities not to assist the code which is more popular and in which Britain is a big fish in a small pool of countries compared to one of many in the swamp of Flat racing.
An analogy can be made with football. To compete with Europe’s best leagues the top division in English football had big money poured into it and has been changed out of all recognition and enhanced disproportionately at the expense of the overall league system. However, English clubs are no more successful in European competitions than they were in, say, the 1970s.
Far better for the authorities, who surely benefit from the amount of money pinging around in the Flat game (the Jockey Club is stinking rich), to redistribute an unevenly favourable portion of that revenue to the Jumps. The sum involved will not be missed in terms of Britain’s relative standing in the international Flat circus.
March 7, 2018 at 14:08 #1345102VVM retired.
March 7, 2018 at 15:37 #1345111Real shame vvm missing out, i see la bague au roi may be rerouted here whic would be interesting, especially with soft ground looking likely now, although she looked excellent over the longer trip, she may entice me on the day in the without market with BDD looking nailed on to run here now instead of the ryanair, youd think vvm retirement has just confirmed that.
