Is he a good/great trainer or does he just have very good horses to train? How do you think he would do if he had the ‘normal’ intake of horses?

My feelings it is a bit like Formula One drivers. Does the car win the Championship or the driver. When you look at the career of Vettel, his success depended on the superiority of his car. I’m not saying put anybody in the ‘best’car they would become champions but I think it’s the car is the deciding factor.

Not sure there is a direct correlation between an F1 car and a horse but I thought i’d pose the question.

Not sure it is fair to single out Appleby. You could ask the same questions about other trainers. Would O’Brien have had the same success without a conveyor belt of Galileos to train?

Maybe we should flip the question round and ask if so called small trainers would be successful if given the same raw material?

One trainer I have always liked is Chris Wall. He has never had that many horses but every year he seems to find one or two good ones that can compete in pattern company, as he showed again at Newmarket this week.

Would he win the same races as Appleby if he was sent those horses? I think he would but I suppose it is just speculation.

Personally I think he is a very decent trainer.

Certainly miles better than bin Suroor or that cretin who was jabbing the horses up, Zarooni was it?

I only took Appleby as the example because of his success at the moment. Would he the most successful that Godolphin has had?

I think it’s all a bit “Emperor’s New Clothes” with racehorse trainers generally.

Sure, you need to learn the ropes about stable management, there’s an art (or science) to placing horses and some trainers are clearly better than others.

But I don’t think “genius” or “great” are terms I would ever be in a rush to apply to any trainer.

A lot of them are ex public school, not smart enough to work in the City, not even smart enough to become a Conservative MP, so they go into racing and train horses – often owned by those richer, smarter, people in the City!

    However, I digress.

It’s definitely a results-relative-to-resources analysis and Charlie Appleby has plenty of resources.

But, incredibly given all the above, I almost like the guy.

I like his respect for the historical art of preparing horses for big races, would imagine he’s read up on Noel Murless etc, and what he said about the 2,000 Guineas being, in some senses, the last 2yo race of last season, resonated with me and made me think Native Trail is in good hands.

Of all the big trainers backed by billions Appleby certainly wouldn’t be the least talented.

Once again, Davies contrives to damn with faint praise!

“There’s an art (or science) to placing horses and some trainers are clearly better than others.”

I do have more respect for trainers who punch above their weight with moderate horses and place them well than I do for trainers who have a procession of blue blooded horses through their hands.

Having said that, you still have to train those horses well. I have not bought the “Horses In Training” book for a few years but I always remember the likes of Ben Hanbury and the late Alec Stewart always had a yard full of impeccably bred horses owned by the Maktoums but won hardly anything.

Charlie Appleby must be the most envied of all trainers at Newmarket Colin.
His horses have their own personal gallops at Moulton Paddocks, so no chance of seeing his string out on Warren Hill on a brisk early morning stakeout. He also has the opportunity to take any horses he chooses out to Dubai and let them winter in the warm winter sunshine and exercise on the dirt and turf tracks at Meydan racecourse, and where he himself and family can escape the cold British winter.
He definitely is the best trainer Godolphin have ever had and a very nice approachable person who gives you fair analysis of his horses chances.

He must breath multiple sighs of relief as each of his horses realises it’s potential as he knows failure in this job is not an option.
I would definitely recognise him as a great trainer Colin. :good: Jac

You could say the same about O’Brien as well. Yes, he has had the conveyor belt of Galileos I mentioned earlier but Magnier would have booted him out long ago if he had not been regularly winning Group 1s.

Everyone hates everyone in racing, Lord Tatling – we know this.

They all pretend this isn’t the case….but it so is.

I suspect the order might be reversed the next time they meet. Not convinced that was Mr Buick’s finest hour.
