This iconic stud farm, run by a trust since the death of its owner, Henryk de Kwiatkowski, nearly 10 years is to be sold to billionaire and racing enthusiast Brad Kelley.
De Kwiatkowski bought Calumet in 1992 after the notorious fraudster, J.T. Lundy, (who’d inherited the place on the death of Lucille Wright in 1982) had bankrupted the farm.
Started in 1924 as a standardbred operation (produced Calumet Butler and Calumet Chuck), it became a thoroughbred stud in 1932 where 2 American Triple Crown winners were bred (Whirlaway and Citation), and stallions like Bull Lea, Derby winner Blenheim and Alydar (the latter also bred there) stood.
It’s good that Calumet is going to remain in good hands.

April 23, 2012 at 13:29 #401892I hope Mr Kelley retains the Devil’s Red, Dark Blue bars on Sleeves and Cap silks of Calumet Farm. To see Calumet horses run in different silks would be sacrilege.

Hear, hear Slewman. One of the most distinctive and historic sets of silks in the game.
April 26, 2012 at 12:09 #402209For the record Ivanjica, Mr Kelley races horses in the US under the banner of Bluegrass Hall LLC. And his silks are Black, Gold Chevrons, Gold Chevrons on Sleeves, Gold Cap.
April 26, 2012 at 12:45 #402213Let’s hope he brings the lustre and prestige of the old days back to the Calumet Farm name.
May 4, 2012 at 23:06 #403038Thought this would happen. Kelley has decided to race his horse in the Derby with the Calumet colours.
